News Archive for Mar 2013 By Charles.S.Perera  Though the President of USA Barack Obama’s father was from a developing country, the President is not interested in poor developing countries, preferring to hobnob with the White Nations of the West, and those prosperous Nations in  Asia. He visited India perhaps for political reasons and because pandering it would help US political strategy against China.  Kenya which he visited as the country of his father and where he met his relatives was not so much to his liking. In one of his books he says that his wife Michelle  coming back after  visiting Kenya said she... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/03/13) Asada M Erpini  Media reports dated 30 March mention that Mr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India will discuss with his Minister of External Affairs the issue of his participation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to be held in Colombo later in the year. Obviously the learned gentleman is undecided, and he needs the help of others to arrive at a decision.  There are millions of peace-loving Sri Lankans who are ready to help the Indian Prime Minister in the dilemma he is facing, and who can help him get out of the quagmire. C. Wijeyawickrema, LL.B., Ph.D. Need for a new map of terrain What empowers a Sinhala/Tamil medium graduate left Sri Lanka in frustration to become a professor, a scientist or a research director for example, in USA facing world-wide competition? How was it possible for young men from poor Sri Lanka to win the world cup of cricket by team effort? What reasons were the behind the capacity of village girls and boys in Sri Lanka to end a thirty-year war in less than three years surprising the whole world? In each case the old map of terrain which was... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/03/13)
By Ellen Brown Confiscating the customer deposits in Cyprus banks, it seems, was not a one-off, desperate idea of a few Eurozone “troika†officials scrambling to salvage their balance sheets. A joint paper by the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Bank of England dated December 10, 2012, shows that these plans have been long in the making; that they originated with the G20 Financial Stability Board in Basel, Switzerland (discussed earlier here); and that the result will be to deliver clear title to the banks of depositor funds. New Zealand has a similar directive, discussed in my last... -Full Story- (globalresearch.ca - 31/03/13)
Asada M Erpini  The depths, to which the bankrupt political numbskulls in Tamil Nadu can descend to, as reported in the media on 28 March, are mind boggling.  When the average reader was convinced that the politicians, the actors and the actors-turned-politicians in the Dravidian State had given their best performances so far vis a vis Sri Lanka, now comes the story of calls for the arrest of His Excellency Prasad Kariyawasam, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in India.  A man called Vaiko wants His Excellency arrested, and another individual, named Ramadoss, has said that the High Commissioner should be... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/03/13)

by Dr Rifai Naleemi. London   Srilanka Muslims have been living in peace and harmoeny in the Island for more than 1000 years. They have been cooperating and supporting the majority Singhalese communities throughout Srilankan history since pre-independence period. Since pre-colonial times, Muslim people in Srilanka have been contributing for the unity and integrity of Srilanka: Muslims have greatly contributed to Srilanka in many fields and yet, their contributions are sometimes not rightly recognized, highlighted or made to be known to non-Muslim people in Srilanka. It is a duty and responsibility of Muslim community to record all these... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/03/13)

Ranjini Deraniyagala Mr Mahindapala has outlined a true record of the Western politics. But is all this digging up help Sri Lanka. Here are my take on all these scenarios: 1. Did Sri Lanka succeed in downplaying the past military  roles of USA and EU Alliances.  They are united and whatever done was under Human Rights according to their definitions.    They all stand by that in unisom. Any criticism of them as regards their HUman Rights actions though may be right or wrong were not in dispute at the time. The fact is there were no big powers refuting their actions. They all stood... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/03/13)
Dr. Daya Hewapathirane Vancouver, CANADA  Sufism or the Sufi Muslim Ideology  Traditionally, Sufism or the Sufi Muslim ideology had been the predominant Islamic spiritual tradition observed throughout Southern Asia, including Sri Lanka. Sufism is considered to be the mystical, ascetic branch of Islam which emphasizes personal experience with Allah. Sufis can be members of either the Sunni or Shi’a divisions of Islam who share most of the basic principles of Islam. These two divisions stemmed from ancient political strife among Muslims. Sunni Muslims being in the majority, amount to about 88% of the global Muslim population.  Threats... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/03/13) Shenali Waduge There comes a time when tough actions need to be taken in the interest of the country. Inaction leads to dire consequences - 30 years of LTTE terror is what happened. The similarities between what we went through and what is enfolding now gives sufficient reason for prompt action. Power and money were the curses that delayed then and are likely to be the key obstacles for present inaction. Previous Governments were not resolved enough to take action and the country ended up suffering. That same fate cannot be repeated. Sandasen Marasinghe, Disna Mudalige and Ridma Disssanayake Courtesy The Daily News Although rumours abound on the tense situation created by an attack on a textile shop in Pepiliyana by an unruly mob on Thursday night, the root cause of the incident was a personal dispute, said Police Spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena. A violent group attacked and pelted stones at the popular clothing store causing severe damage to the premises and merchandise. The... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/03/13)
Shenali Waduge Independence to colonies came at a cost with a legacy that bound nations in debt by spending on solving the problems the colonials implanted. People were divided. Populations were divided. Ethnicities were divided. Tribes were divided. Boundaries were created and endless issues associated with each. Muslims have issues, Christians have issues, but when Hindus in India and Buddhists in Sri Lanka voice their issues it is referred to as communal. To be Hindu and to say one is Hindu is considered taboo just as Buddhists and Sinhalese are finding out too. Political correctness has meant politicians are... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 29/03/13)
Dilrook Kannangara The recent racism boilover in Tamil Nadu teaches us many things. It is how Sri Lanka will be after meaningful power devolution. TNA, TULF and ACTC led Northern Province will be no different to DMK and AIADMK led Tamil Nadu state of India, if not worse. However, things get far worse than that. What we also saw in the devolution model of India is how states/provinces manipulated the Centre’s foreign policy to the extent of creating an adversary out of a friend and making a mockery of India’s otherwise consistent foreign policy! LankaWeb Weekly Editorial March 30th 2013   It was always a forgone conclusion that despite all the hooing and haaing by the likes of Jayalalitha, Vaiko and Karunanidhi to name some. over Sri Lankan matters relative to Tamils, India would not toe the line with their agitations which are plainly visible as linked to the pro LTTE Global Tamil diaspora. This seems somewhat reprehensible and contentious as today in Sri Lanka there are many Tamils who have shed their shackled past links with the LTTE and are returning to a life of normalcy quite happy to accept the programs towards resettlement... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 29/03/13)

Dr. Tilak S. All humanity knows the crimes committed in Iraq by those we accused, but no jurisdiction is bringing them to justice. We presented with Iraqi victims a solid case drawing on evidence contained in over 900 documents and that refer to thousands of individual incidents from which a pattern of accumulated harm and intent can be discerned. By Ajamu Baraka This month marks the tenth anniversary of the U.S. attack on Iraq, one of the most egregious expressions of naked power and imperial ambition since the Second World War. The attack defied both an outraged world opinion  expressed by global mass demonstrations  and the United Nations charter. It also marked a change from the previous veiled decorum of supposed adherence to international law that defined post-war international relations. The Bush administration, armed with the ultimate expression of the arrogance of U.S. exceptionalism – legislation passed by the U.S. Congress – unleashed a murderous assault... -Full Story- (globalresearch.ca - 29/03/13)

Sri Lanka Support Group, Canberra The recent Geneva Resolutions against Sri Lanka, instigated by the US and India, have been designed to enforce the 13th amendment fully. The 13th amendment was enacted in 1987 by the then President, JR Jayewardene; at that time he failed to hold a referendum to seek the consensus of the masses - as required by the Constitution. The learned Supreme Court judge, the late Justice, Raja Wanasundera, in his judgment about the enactment stated that it was an unlawful act.  The then government still  passed legislation, with the legal advice given to it... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 28/03/13)
Shenali Waduge The world is often shaken by issues that serve to test the reactions of people. The halal certificate appears to be one such issue. Lessons to be taken are many, first and foremost of which is that on either side of any debate there are the mischief makers dousing flames for their profit. The victory comes in the realization of this and next to undo the damage and to ensure that such does not arise in future. Muslims have lived in Sri Lanka for 1000 years or so. There was no halal requirement ever since and Muslims... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 28/03/13)

Dr Hector Perera           London       How many poisonous gases are around us? Honestly too many to count and that depends on where you are and what time of the day or night. Our lives are dependent on the air around us. It is called the earth’s atmosphere. It consists of several layers of gases and they are upheld by gravity. The first layer from the earth is about ten miles wide into space. This layer is called the troposphere. The gases found here in the largest quantities are nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. A substance in the air that... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 25/03/13)

The US and allies inclusive of India are not concerned about the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims or how many died, disappeared or were resettled or the scale of development taking place. These are all smokescreens to hide the true agenda. They are coming after the Rajapakse’s and no one else. The minister pointed out that preambular part of the text is ‘intrusive, bears misinterpretations and focuses disproportionately on the negative and eliminates or is dismissive of the positive.’... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 21/03/13)

Dr.Tilak Fernando Caretaker at the Sri Lanka High Commission, Buluwela, finally retired after rendering an extended service, with an added bonus of a few extra years due to some problems experienced in appointing new staff to the London Mission as the British Foreign Office did bring down the curtain on Sri Lankan foreign office due to ‘non-compliance of basic regulations’ where many diplomats as well as the Administrative Service staff sent from Colombo began to abandon the ‘ship’ after their tour of duty and sought employment elsewhere in London. The situation turned into a chaotic state of affairs when... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 21/03/13)

By Pepe Escobar First thing we do, lets kill all mythographers (lawyerly or not): the rape of Iraq is the biggest, man-made humanitarian disaster of our times. Its essential to keep in mind this was a direct consequence of Washington smashing international law to pieces; after Iraq, any freak anywhere can unleash preemptive war, and quote Bush/Cheney 2003 as precedent. And yet, 10 years after Shock and Awe, even so-called "liberals" have been trying to legitimize something, anything, out of the "Iraq project". There was never a "project"; only a dizzying maze of lies - including a posteriori justifications... -Full Story- (atimes.com - 21/03/13)

Constructive Relativism is based on Buddhist culture and states that the world is nothing but a creation of the observer due to ignorance of anicca, dukka, anatma and that the world is the same as the knowledge of the world. Hameed Abdul Karim This halaal certificate affair keeps coming up in Shenali Waduge’s every argument, despite the fact that I explained this in my very first response. So I am compelled to repeat myself. The halaal issue popped up when non-Muslim restaurants like McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and KFC opened shop here. It was they who approached Jamaithul Ullama for this endorsement so that they could cater to Muslim clients fearing that if they didn’t have this certificate they would lose out on the Muslim consumer. It was actually the IMF that ruined Sri Lanka by imposing its Structural Adjustment Programme in 1977. H. L. D. Mahindapala  Of all the human rights issues in global conflict and post-conflict zones why is India, EU and USA focussed relentlessly -- and, more importantly, selectively -- on Sri Lanka? What is behind their persistent and the holier-than-thou obsession to hunt Sri Lanka with a vengeance? Is it pursued to fulfill the aims and objective of a higher morality, or the principles of the UN Charter, or a Mosesian legal code? Or is it because Sri Lanka has committed such unspeakable gross violation of human rights like the Indians in Kashmir, or the Americans in Afghanistan where... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/03/13)
Shenali Waduge India appears to refuse to accept Sri Lanka is a sovereign nation. Successive Indian governments have done their best to always undermine Sri Lanka’s sovereign status though diplomatic speeches will say otherwise. That was how LTTE came to be used as a tool to destabilize Sri Lanka. However, its choice of leader was not one to simply follow orders from Delhi. Tables turned with time when the LTTE leader agreed to a formula that would maintain his leadership in Sri Lanka but would help establish Western influence in the region – that was what turned LTTE into... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/03/13)

Ernest Perera Hold on a second before everyone joins the Buddhist bashing which has become quite a Colombo-topic for the majority populace that prevails and that majority are not Buddhists. This is the only country in the world that a country that has over 70% Buddhists would have less than 14% Buddhists in its capital. Now that is something to really be amused at. So should we be surprised when all the media – print, electronic or even word of mouth that generates from Colombo should be anything but anti-Buddhist? I thought so too. According to Friedman, the big challenge we face in the Arab and Islamic world is "the Narrative" -- his patronizing term for Muslim views about Americas supposedly negative role in the region. If Muslims werent so irrational, he thinks, they would recognize that "U.S. foreign policy has been largely dedicated to rescuing Muslims or trying to help free them from tyranny." Gone are the days of the Fifties and Sixties when the United Nations was spearheading development functions. World Development has now been taken over by the IMF’s Structural Adjustment Programme while the United Nations is now a cat’s paw in the hands of the Superpowers in their attempt to police the world.... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/03/13)

Dilrook Kannangara UNHRC has been ridiculed by many UN members over its short life span. The conduct of UNHRC violates the UN Charter on members and as a result it has become ineffective. Unlike the UN or the UN Security Council, the UNHRC cannot impose any real punitive measures on any country. According to USA, there has not been much progress in Sri Lanka following the 2012 resolution. Hence, they argue, the 2013 procedural resolution. If the 2012 resolution was binding and effective against Sri Lanka, there is no need of another ‘procedural’ resolution. A US official has threatened... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/03/13)

Dr Hector Perera               London Sometimes the students need some day today examples to remember certain things in chemistry. To some students this subject chemistry is little mysterious to understand because the name also sounds like che-mystry. There are plenty of reactions taking place in the surrounding, including at home but unless they are explained in simple ways, some students find it difficult to convince themselves. I mentioned about the reaction of metals with oxygen, gave metal oxides and some common examples, iron oxide, copper oxide and aluminium oxide. Mounting evidence show, that the United State’s intention to bring down Sri Lanka at UNHRC with another resolution is an eye washer to divert global attention from its own sins. Nirupama Subramanian As a draft resolution on accountability in Sri Lanka does the rounds preparatory to being tabled by the United States in the current session of the Human Rights Council, the outcome that India may be hoping for most is that it will be adopted as a consensus document and no voting will be required.
