WIPO commends Sri Lanka for concrete deliverables under IP Action Plan
The Director General of the Geneva based World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Dr. Francis Gurry, commended Sri Lanka for its achievements and concrete deliverables under the 10 Point GoSL-WIPO Intellectual Property Action Plan, which could serve as a good model for other countries similarly placed as Sri Lanka. According to media reports, Sri Lanka will join the collective of states that charge Value Added Tax (VAT) on health and education. These two most important service sectors are exempted from VAT in most countries where private citizens are not ill-treated by rulers. Further, VAT on health and education has come as the government is purportedly trying to create a 'knowledge economy. It is also faced with the problem of 'ageing population'. Quake jolts eastern India
Guwahati: A modest earthquake measuring around 7 magnitudes in Richter scale was experienced in eastern India on Wednesday (13 April 2016). The tremor for two minutes was experienced at 7.26 pm. “Epicenter of the earthquake was in Myanmar-India border at Latitude 230 N & Longitude 94.90 E at the depth of 134 km below the surface of Earth,” said a statement issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Why do we neglect our disabled citizens?
Sri Lanka has a long tradition of sharing with our disabled citizens the state’s largesse when it comes to welfare. The state provides grants for medical expenses and self-employment, assistive devices free of cost, cash transfers to those who have low incomes and provides youth with vocational training in special institutions. The state also subsidizes homes which house children with disabilities and those special schools run only for them by NGOs and the private sector.
