The Travels of a Journalist-ABOUT BOWERS, BOATS AND BUDDIES:Yankee Doodles’ Adventures in Sri Lanka (PART 7A)
By Shelton A. Gunaratne ©2010 Professor of mass communications emeritus, Minnesota State University Moorhead
When the Yankee Doodles—the Bowerses—joined us—the Gunaratnes—on a tour of Sri Lanka in July 2000, they did not come riding on ponies or wearing feathered caps. Rather, they wanted to go riding on elephants, the tamed behemoths they had seen in pictures of the world-famous Kandy Perahera. They also wanted to pursue their fascination with monkeys, following Bowers’ encounter with a Penang monkey, which refused to be insulted by a touring Yankee Doodle, just three years ago. This was the second Asian collaborative tour of... -Full Story-

Leaders waxed and waned about UN Millennium targets
Philip Fernando, former Deputy Editor Sunday Observer, Sri Lanka
UN’s 65h General Assembly seemed to have glossed over the millennium goals. World leaders who convened in New York were waxing and waning about a series of ambitious goals established 10 years ago for improving living conditions in the world’s poorest nations. Whether those targets called the Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015 would be a reality is another question. The short fall seemed obvious. Many economists have expressed doubts about pulling off a pragmatic and realistic achievement scenario in bringing the set target to fruition.  Dr. Jeffrey... -Full Story-

Villainous Poisoning Cases in Sri Lanka
Dr Lalith Perera
Poisoning is a widely used mode of murder in Sri Lanka. Poisons can either act slowly, over a long period of time, or rapidly, within minutes or hours. Certain poisons can imitate diseases, causing the medical experts to misdiagnose a medical problem. The most famous poisoning case in Sri Lanka could be the trial of Fr Mathew Pieris. The Anglican Priest Mathew Pieris and his secretary Dalreen Ingram were convicted by the Colombo High Court for double homicides in 1980. Jathika Saviya was a programme that was initiated in threatened villages following the Kebethigollawa incident. BLACK WATER IN ACTION
ALI SUKHANVER
The western forces have succeeded in depriving Taliban of public support in Pakistan; surely a difficult question to be answered. For the last many years the reality of the Taliban has been a matter of confusions and misunderstandings. Since its beginning, the Taliban movement was simply and purely an ideology-based exercise strongly tinged with the flavour of militancy, but with the passage of time, the ideology vanished and there remained nothing but militancy. More strange is the fact that this militancy proved more fatal and injurious to the Muslims than to the forces eager to crush the... -Full Story-

Mahindapala’s “Ranil about to repeat Uncle JRJ’s end” Posted on September 21st, 2010 was, factual, brilliant and informative. I read it with avidity. What Do Bandaranaike, Premadasa and Rajapaksha Have in Common?

It is a chilling realization that they all have something in common.  So what do they have in common which other national leaders didn’t have? China. The first two were assassinated, even decades later, countrymen are still grappling with the entirety of the conspiracies behind their assassinations. Certainly the assassins were not acting alone. They had powerful shadowy godfathers. Rajapaksha is treading the same path of Bandaranaike and Premadasa in relation to China and he must be protected as a national priority not allowing to end up in a similar fashion. Re: "Boat people abuse our generosity; Tamil case points out need for Canada to reform its immigration policies," by Lorne Gunter, Sept. 12.  Although Lorne Gunter's criticism and condemnation of the brutal nature of Tamil Tigers is commendable, I take strong exception, as a Sinhalese, to the misleading statements he has made about the Sinhalese who constitute 74 per cent of Sri Lanka's population.  Obviously, Gunter has read the wrong reports, perhaps Tamil Eelam propaganda material, to condemn the Sinhalese.  Gunter's comments can be grouped under two categories: discrimination and attacks on... -Full Story-

What is Democracy ? - Who is a Dictator ? –Isn’t 18th Amendment a necessary alternative to 17th Amendment ?
by Charles.S.Perera
Democracy as we had learnt in school is the government of the people, by the people for the people. What we have in Sri Lanka  is the Parliamentary Democracy introduced to us by the British.  Though it was at the beginning strictly applied to the  formation  of a government by a Political Party  accepted by a  majority of the people casting their votes at a Parliamentary election. It is  also extended  in the  conduct of organisations, institutions and societies as well.  There are differences in the democratic system of governance in different countries of the world.  It was a grand Burma Convention held in New Delhi six years back and the prime mover of the event was a dynamic Indian political leader with socialist background, George Fernandes. The convention received wide coverage in the media and made a significant impact on the Indian civil society groups and its outlook towards the pro-democracy movement of Burma under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi.  I met the great trade unionist turned politician George Fernandes for the first time in the convention. One in seven Americans now in poverty

THE ranks of the working-age poor in the United States climbed to the highest level since the 1960s, as the recession threw millions of people out of work last year, leaving one in seven Americans in poverty. The overall poverty rate climbed to 14.3 per cent, or 43.6 million people, the Census Bureau said on Thursday in its annual report on the economic well-being of US households. The hardest-hit are African-Americans and Hispanics. The numbers are comparable to poverty levels of the early 1960s that led President Lyndon Johnson to launch his ''war on poverty''... -Full Story-

Four critical issues plaguing the UNP have come to a head all at once and the leadership is reeling not knowing how to tackle them: 1) unity of the party 2) democratization of the party 3) loss of credibility in electorate and 4) the leadership style/role. All four are linked directly to its current leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe. These four issues clearly signify the incurable malaise caused by the self-destructive  leadership. Cooking is a chemical reaction
Dr Hector Perera
In a chemistry laboratory certain reactions are carried out at room temperature and certain chemicals are heated together to make other chemicals. In synthetic organic chemistry experiments far too complicated chemicals are synthesised in several steps for example antibiotics can be synthesised using simple sugar molecules. When certain bonds in chemicals are broken then only other chemicals can react together?  In my point of view cooking is a kind of chemical reaction and the rate of reaction can be controlled to some extent by controlling the temperature, sometimes we heat and sometimes we cool to make other chemicals.  In cooking... -Full Story-

He made these comments when Parliament was open for ‘Oral Answers to Questions’ session on matters related to Foreign & Commonwealth Office (Ministry). During the debate Sri Lanka issues were discussed under two separate topics. First the debate was open when Katy... -Full Story-

The ugly Americans once more
Off my chest  by Andare-Courtesy The Island
How very considerate of Washington to warn the Sri Lankan people-and indeed the world-that the recent constitutional changes called the 18th Amendment was a danger to democracy. As this newspaper rightly pointed out editorially the constitutional amendment provoked intense controversy among legal and academic circles and in what might be loosely called among "thinking people." That is as it should be in a functioning democracy. Dissent and the right to express a dissenting view are at the heart of democracy. Those who followed the debate-short but sharp perhaps due to inordinate haste... -Full Story-

Sex trade, forced labor top U.N. human trafficking list
UNITED NATIONS (CNN) --
Sexual exploitation and forced labor are the most common forms of human trafficking in the world, a new report from the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime said. Aid agencies say young women are being forced into prostitution across Russia's capital. The "Global Report on Trafficking in Persons" is based on data from 155 countries and offers a global assessment of human trafficking and efforts to fight it. The most common form of human trafficking is sexual exploitation, at 79 percent, the report said. The victims of sexual exploitation are predominantly women and girls. In... -Full Story-

Obituary: R.I.P UNP
H. L. D. Mahindapala
Ranil Wickremesinghe was expected to announce at yesterday’s press conference a reasonable and acceptable solution to the crisis caused by his failed leadership. But it ended predictably in worsening the crisis with the reformists rejecting his formula. The solution he offered was to plead for more time to devolve power to the younger generation of UNPers. It is obvious that with this offer he is trying to fool himself and his party. At the root of the crisis is a demand for a change in leadership not a cosmetic devolution of power. Nothing short of... -Full Story-

Take Over Key Municipal Councils Under a Central Government Authority
- Kumar Moses
Revenue of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is over Rs 1 billion a year. However, it is no secret that CMC is not providing comparable services. In fact, CMC is a symbol of waste, corruption, favouritism and inefficiency. However, there is more to it. Over the years, it has become a safe den for anti-national elements. In fact, the CMC area is the last frontier of nationalist forces. The term, ‘Colombans’ used to describe the alien conduct types associated with anti-national elements originate from the unconquerable Greater Colombo area.  If I were Charles Dickens, I would have written a novel on James K. Bowers, my long-time pal who has used Lake Minnetonka as his habitat for four decades. He lived the life of a sybarite in his younger days, and used his exuberant business skills, as well as the business reputation of his father-in-law Andrès Perry, to become reasonably rich. Term limits and fake diplomatic punditry of the West

The anti-democratic slant imputed by the US State Department to the legislative process relative to presidential terms limits in Sri Lanka exceeded all limits of proprietorship.  US has not merely recommended or suggested what Sri Lanka should do about terms limits.  Debunking and denouncing is what is practiced: the signature dictum of the West.  Assigning blame without any provocation and use of fake diplomatic punditry is West’s favourite pastime.  There is an ethical imperative in foreign affairs that debars any country from interfering in... -Full Story-

Sept.13th 2010 To all the negative comments posted over internationally acclaimed terrorism expert Dr. Rohan Guneratna's recent overview relative to Canada and LTTE terrorism, it must be responded that they seem to point to anti Presidential as well as pro Tamil Tiger sentiment rather than viewing the issue on its merits and impending ramifications which are quite serious. "God may exist, but science can explain the universe without the need for a creator," Hawking told CNN's "Larry King Live" in an interview that aired Friday. Rajapaksa gets sweeping powers
Sutirtho Patranobis,
Despite fears of a looming all-powerful executive presidency, Sri Lankan lawmakers overwhelmingly voted on Wednesday to bring in an amendment to the country's Constitution to abolish the two-limit term for Presidents and expand the powers of the country's top executive office. The new 18th amendment (18 A) gives President Mahinda Rajapaksa, 64, unfettered powers to make crucial appoints in the judiciary and public service commissions. Following the amendment, he is now eligible for election at the end of his current -- his second -- term in 2016. He won his first Presidential election in November, 2005. The Rajapaksa-led... -Full Story-

Executive presidency — a necessary deviland a useful tool.
Geethanjana Kudaligamage
Rajapakse, regional politics, “Eurocentric Developmentalism” and the western hegemony (Part 14-) As I was writing this article, the 18th amendment was pending to be submitted before the parliament for approval. Other than some NGOs and some opposition political parties, there is no significant public participation in opposing this move. The silence of the public can be taken as their tacit approval for the amendment to the constitution that removes the two term limit of a person serving in the office of presidency. After witnessing the successful end of the war largely due to the power invested in... -Full Story-

September 8, 2010   The Editor(Letters) THE OTTAWA CITIZEN   Sir:   "One more boatload of Tamils: expert" is on its way to Canada you said.  This is insane, when Sri Lanka has been the most amazing success story in recent history where Tamil refugees are returning home in the thousands every week, since the 27-year Tamil Tiger war ended that haemorrhaged that island killing over 100,000 people.  Why are these Tamil refugees returning home in the thousands?  Simple.  Because finally there is 'Peace' in that land nation.   Since the war ended... -Full Story-

Strategic Implications of 18-Amendment Highly Desirable for Sri Lanka
- Kumar Moses
There are those who support the 18-Amendment and those who oppose. Have you noticed that most of those who oppose it and the few who vehemently oppose it are anti-Sri Lankans? When people like P Saravanamuttu, Rohan Edirisingha, Basil Fernando, Tisaranee Gunasekera, Rohini Hensman, Suresh Premachandran oppose anything, at face value, it must be pro-Sri Lankan! They never supported anything good for Sri Lanka and never will. There are strategic implications of the 18 Amendment not visible to the naked eyes of many. They see it as an amassment of power in the hands... -Full Story-

All top scholars in State universities extended their strong support for the 18th Amendment yesterday. It can only accelerate the country’s development process while ensuring the people’s right to appoint a President according to their wish. Addressing a press briefing held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, yesterday the University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Gamini Samaranayake said that US kept the number of terms of the President open, till the country gained economic stability and became the... -Full Story-

If Presidents Had Three Terms, CBK Would be Ruling Still, Or Worse
Dilrook Kannangara
Will Sri Lanka get a different set of leaders starting from 2010? No. Will nationalist leaders with foresight and intelligence always become president? No. In fact, these are oddities in Sri Lankan politics. Increasing the President’s terms to three terms is such a shortsighted thing to do. What if this provision was there all along? Then Chandrika Kumaratunga would still be the president after she had contested the 2005 election and won. She would be president, still as the term ends in 2011. Or worse, Ranil would be the President by now. Either way... -Full Story-

University of Peradeniya and University of Colombo
We, the undersigned academics attached to different universities in Sri Lanka, call upon the government to re-consider the proposed 18th Amendment to the Constitution for the reasons set out below.  Constitutional reforms, like elections, go to the heart of what it means to be a democracy in the modern-day world. Any changes that are introduced to a country’s constitution should be undertaken after due deliberation and consultation while having at its centre, the will of the People. Depression is a mood disorder which can affect adults as well as children. In general terms depression is an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness, sadness and lack of self-worth. It is more than a sad feeling. Depression is common among adults. Unlike adults childhood depression is difficult to distinguish.  They often express their feelings through behavior.  Depression affects child's overall energy, mood, expressions of emotion and behavior.  According to the British experts at least two per cent of children under 12 struggle with significant depression, and by teenage years this has risen to five per cent.  ... -Full Story-

Associated features of conduct disorder include an inability to appreciate the importance of others' welfare and little guilt or remorse about harming others. The etiology of conduct disorder involves an interaction of genetic/constitutional, familial and social factors.  Children with Conduct Disorder often view the world as a hostile and threatening place and they have difficulty maintaining friendships. Paramilitaries Crucial to Face Future Terror Threats

The use of paramilitary forces by governments has been controversial; in fact very controversial. However, it is a strategy that worked successfully in Sri Lanka. Not once or twice but it worked many times and still remains the most potent force multiplier - a factor that enhances the effectiveness of an army - in counter terror warfare. Their success speaks for itself. Use of paramilitaries became prominent in handling JVP terror in the late 1980s. Half a dozen paramilitary groups were set up to wear down the JVP. It was an extremely successful strategy.... -Full Story-

The Sri Lanka Tamils should bury the past, to begin a new way of life with a different way of thinking.
By Charles.S.Perera
UNP was never a progressive party.  Progress came to Sri Lanka only after SWRD Bandaranayake  broke away from UNP to set up a new political party of the people. When UNP came to power once again  under the leadership of JR Jayawardhana, it was digression from the path of progress delineated by the MEP.  JR is responsible for the present dilemma of Sri Lanka with  the 13th and the 17th amendments. After him the R.Premadasa government attempted to trace a new path of progress, which was  jagged with  potholes, and led to his own destruction. .  It... -Full Story-

Hurray for the judgment!
Dr.Reffai
Today's report in Daily Mirror that there was a judgment to the effect that the mother can't leave the children and go abroad  should be welcomed whole heartedly.  I wish there is a law to prohibit mothers from leaving young children and going for jobs abroad, specially if the husband is alive. Rather it is better to send the husband and for the mother to stay back with the children. Even better, of course is for both parnts to stay together and look after the children. Islam preaches that the provision of a person is  written in his... -Full Story-

Nailed woman
Dr.Reffai
The recent news about the nailed woman is - to say the least - atrocious. But have we wondered what we are going to do about it? That is other than shouting about Saudi. Saudi, of course since it is a Muslim country comes under fire. But we must realize it is not the country which did the nailing - but a person there. Any country can have Mervin silvas, sakvithis and lalith kothalawela. Does not mean the country is promoting it. Not that Saudi always is right. No country is. But the problem is totally ours -... -Full Story-

Mahinda first to climb the Himalayan peak of power
H. L. D. Mahindapala
Two landmark events projecting the political landscape in the coming years occurred almost simultaneously last week.  First, President Mahinda Rajapakse reached the highest peak of his political career. If the defeat of Prabhakaran won the hearts and minds of the electorate at large, enthroning him as the unrivalled leader in the political arena, the silent parliamentary coup that took him across the critical line into a two-thirds majority last week has entrenched him as the constitutional monarch of all what he surveys. News reports stated that the new deal clinched with the SLMC includes support... -Full Story-

When Will They Ever Learn
Upali S  -  USA
The TAMILS wherever they are, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, to name three countries where they live in substantial numbers are not a happy race.  They have never been and they never will be. They do not realize nor admit that they are a minority in all three of these countries.  Since Sri Lanka was more tolerant than the others and the Sinhalese majority of Sri Lanka have been more gentle and kind to their somewhat noisy but hardworking  neighbors from South India for almost 1500 years as well as to Portuguese, Dutch and the British... -Full Story-

Correction ! Correction !
Susantha.
QUOTE:-  UNTIL A POLITICAL SOLUTION IS FOUND FOR THE TAMILS' ISSUE, THE DIASPORA WILL NOT GIVE A CENT FOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH, UNP  MP SWAMINATHAN. UNQUOTE.  MP Swaminathan, Iam reluctantly compelled to tell you that your utterence is tantamount to stercus tauri. Whom are you threatening ? Is it  only the  Tamils in the  North, or is it the Sri Lankans, or is it the Government ?  Let me set the Record straight.  You say the Diaspora will not give a cent.  WRONG.  You are back in the old business of misleading the god fearing, beautiful  TAMILS IN SRI LANKA.... -Full Story-

Bed Wetting in Children
Dr RuwanM Jayatunge
Bedwetting or nocturnal enuresis is involuntary urination while asleep after the age at which bladder control would normally be anticipated. A large number of young children and teenagers wet the bed every night. It is an agonizing problem to the both children and to their parents. Children feel agitated sometimes depressed over bed wetting and they often have low self-esteem and low self confidence.  By five years old, most children have successfully stopped wetting the bed without any intervention. Among those children who still wet the bed after the age of six, most will complete... -Full Story-
