News Archive for Oct 2011 Nalliah Thayabharan Capitalism is a confidence trick, a dazzling edifice built on paper promises, gambling, bets and speculation. Wall Street doesn’t make or produce anything. The Wall Street however attractive it may appear is built on paper. Wall Street only gambles and bets and speculates. Modern day bank robbers are at Wall Street but they wear grey suits and not masks. Speculators, propagandists and financiers of Wall Street are given some unfair advantage over the average consumers and taxpayers and the cumulative effect of the people watching selfishness prevail over the public interest has been an undermining of the... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/10/11) MEDIA RELEASE SRI LANKA SUPPORT GROUP, CANBERRA By inviting the Tamil Separatists, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), to a secret meeting with her, Hillary Clinton is breaching all the accepted diplomatic norms and tendencies.  When the megalomaniac terrorist leader Prabhakaran was alive, the TNA acted as his mouthpiece. Since his demise, they have more freedom. They indirectly talk about secession of Sri Lanka. This will become more prevalent in the future.  The TNA is a racist organisation that aspires to nothing else but the division of Sri Lanka. That is why they connived with the megalomaniac terrorist leader. They... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/10/11)
LankaWeb Weekly Editorial November 1st 2011  While it is more than likely at all the finger pointing at Sri Lanka over the alleged Human Rights violations during the Country's Armed Forces campaign of almost three decades to put down the internal armed insurrection of the Tamil Tigers will never bring down Sri Lanka, the amazing persistence of those who continue to discredit the Island Nation will take a long time to subside. Why? because of the bipartisan support given to them by countries who not only maintain a double standard in outlawing the Tamil Tigers yet lend an ear to those who are... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/10/11)
By M D P DISSANAYAKE  Chaminda Vass has been given a rough ride by Sri Lankan cricket administrators. Chaminda has performed in an excellent manner, except for few odd matches in which he failed to secure wickets.  But teaming up with the spinners of the calibre of Murali and Sanath, Vass was able to penetrate in the fast bowling attack with great veracity. Some commentators believe that most of the matches in the past years were won by Sri Lanka due to single-handed effort of Great Murali.  This is not true. The statistics proves otherwise. Just like Vass, Murali... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/10/11)

Vajiragnana Warnakulasuriya Dear Prime Minister Julia Gillard,  Amidst all adversities against the Sri Lankan President and the country’s participation in the conference, you, foreign affairs Minister Mr.Kevin Rudd and the Attorney General R. Mcclelland averted a serious breach of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Nations. Dr.Tilak Fernando The present volatile scenario in the world is conveying an important message universally that international politics are going to affect peoples’ lives in the very near future to coincide with the prophesy of breaking out of a major war among some nations. According to this prognostication the future will depend on politicians and rulers where only the virtuous ones will survive and rotten tyrants will get eliminated. Looking at contemporary world politics, particularly at the Middle Eastern countries, this becomes highly probable. Why do conflicts surface and people begin to rebel against rulers categorising them as tyrants?... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 31/10/11)
By Stanley Perera-Melbourne British amateur Prime Minister David Cameron is warning Sri Lanka to improve human rights records before 2013. The boy did not say what he is going to do if Sri Lanka failed to dance to his tune. Does David look like a boy trying to do a man’s job? Does the British Prime Minister display his amateuristic behaviour in global politics? Wise man doesn’t bark. Also a clever man doesn’t dance to the tune of a fool or a boy.  Cameron does not understand how a responsible person should handle sensitive global issues. Ira de Silva London, Ontario The Editor Toronto Star Toronto, Ontario  Dear Sir:  This article epitomises the writers lack of any knowledge of the ground realities in Sri Lanka, reliance on unsubstantiated allegations and hoping that repeating falsehoods will make them facts. It is well known that Mr. Harper's stand has little to do with rights but everything to do with trying to get the so-called Tamil vote in the Toronto area where known Tamil terrorist supporters, as indicated in the Canadian media, were candidates for the Conservatives. To attend or not is his choice, he is one of fifty-four. Before 2013 it... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/10/11)

Later, as reported,  he had died from gun shot wounds to the head and abdomen. So it is another cold-blooded killing as Osama Bin Laden.  Bin Laden was unarmed and was shot by the US Marines in front of his daughter and family. Injured Gaddafi had been killed under suspicious circumstances by Libyan rebels who are backed by the US and her allies. And they are jubilant over... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 23/10/11)

These were the civilians that eventually became “rebels†given arms by the West to overthrow Gaddafi in a movement called “liberating Libyaâ€ÂÂÂ. RT With Libya’s liberation to be officially announced on Sunday and NTC loyalists continuing to celebrate the downfall of Gaddafi’s regime, the question of Libya’s future is rearing its head. And for some it is obvious NATO will not leave so fast. The liberation is to be declared on Sunday in the city of Benghazi, and not in the capital Tripoli, interim government officials have announced. The chairman of the ruling National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, will make the declaration. The celebrations of Gaddafi’s death are still continuing in Tripoli. In contrast to this those who read her articles allege that she is anti-Sri Lanka, anti-national, anti-buddhist, anti-govt and anti-Rajapakse for defeating the LTTE and so on. A young friend of mine was perturbed by the fact that Sri Lanka had, going by the amount of coverage, lamented the passing of this man but seemed to have been less upset by the death around the same time of veteran actor Joe Abeywickrema. ‘I am worried about my generation,’ she said. Dr.Tilak Fernando There is a five-letter word in the Oxford Dictionary the sound of which has a mixture of warning, embarrassment and contempt wrapped within it. This magic word ‘TABOO’ was originally used by the Filipinos, later adopted by the French and ultimately by the English. Taboo in simple terms signifies a form of restraint on social behaviour. It is classified as, “prohibition of words, actions or anything that is prohibited by tradition or social usageâ€ÂÂÂ.  Dr Hector Perera     London  When we cook by firewood, we always get smoke; we cannot get smokeless flame with firewood unlike in gas cooking. Black smoke is due to incomplete combustion of organic matter such as, wood or even coal. In a typical firewood kitchen inSri Lanka, it’s not uncommon to have a kerosene lamp as well that always gives a stream of soot or carbon black, may be with some fumes of kerosene as well. Joe De Livera Colombo Sri Lanka I was interested to read the comments of Wickrama who has taken upon himself the onus of debunking Homeopathy which he equates to the "rubbish" of Astrology. It is likely that he has never had occasion to use Homeopathy and is perhaps one of those who slavishly depend on their doctor's advice to keep taking Pills as a way of life and were referred to in another Sri Lankan paper, the Daily Mirror where I was quoted in their Editorial entitled: THE PILL POPPING CULTURE http://print.dailymirror.lk/editorial/106-editorial/56457.html Big Pharma depends on people like... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/10/11)

Dilrook Kannangara The true cost of Operation Enduring Freedom to America is shocking. It is USA’s widow maker.  Driven by the greed to get rich from others’ riches, the west embarked on many wars over the years. When the Soviet Union was there, it was not easy but today as the world policeman, the west is having a field day. Despite their complete dominance over the world, battles have been tough. Especially the Iraq and Afghanistan battles have been particularly tough. USA managed to run away from Iraq but coalition troops are bogged down in Afghanistan in a never... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)
Insight By Sunil Kumar October 3rd 2011 As posted October 01, from London, in the Sri Lanka Guardian, a writer by name of Pearl Thevenayagam has bold asked " What do Tamara Kunanayakam, Douglas Devananda and Dayan Jayetilleka have in common?" she then goes on to suggest that " None of these know their identity. Tamara is certainly not a Tamil from the North and East and Douglas and Dayan have yet to identify their fathers." and to cover her liabilities she says it is not intended to cast an aspersion towards identity as though the readers of such items are ignoramuses. It is a bold reference... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)
Ira de Silva London, Ontario The Editor The Island Colombo, Sri Lanka  Dear Sir:  It is about time that the GOSL paid attention to the increasing attacks on Sri Lanka being voiced by western politicians at the behest of expatriate Tamils who supported the LTTE and after the elimination of the LTTE hierarchy continue their goal of dividing Sri Lanka. Instead of financing the bombs and guns to kill Sri Lankans and achieve Eelam they are now pouring their millions into political parties to get the governments of these western countries to harass Sri Lanka. The current government of Canada... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)

Warna Hettiarachchi Toronto, ON, Canada Attn. Daniel Flitton.  Your writing published on The Age today Oct 3rd titled  subject heading is flawed to such degree of opinionated and poisoned nonsense, that it reeks of conspiracy and paid propaganda of wealthy Tamil Tiger Lobby in Australia.  If anyone reads http://tamiljustice.com/tag/daniel-flitton/ written by Flitton and published by pro-LTTE website Tamil Justice on Oct 17th 2009, itself is sufficient proof how well the Australian political stage is being manipulated and manifested by machinations of money and vote power of Tamil Diaspora.  Australia desperately needs the Commonwealth Games of 2018 venue to be... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)
Dr Hector Perera   London Cleverly designed supermarkets Most of the times, we find an excuse for anything. The fault always goes to another person but you are reluctant to admit the mistakes and faults. If we ask the question, “Why do you spend that much money at a supermarketâ€ÂÂÂ, you would say it’s the supermarket’s faults. Unlike the war times, fortunately, now any supermarket sells any kind of food and drinks but it is you have to decide, what to buy and what not to buy and how much to buy.     Public health expert Rupal Sanghvi says that... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)
One Sri Lanka Peace Watch Sri Lanka has witnessed many INGOs whose sole purpose of their existence was to thrive on others’ miseries. The terrorism that plagued our country for three decades was their precious cash cow in the South Asian region. Though 20 million Sri Lankans were greatly relieved by the end of Terrorism, it has infuriated highly paid “carrion fowls†or dollar vultures, as they are commonly known among Sri Lankans -in bogus rights groups such as Amnesty, HRW and Crisis Group.  Now , they make their fullest effort to topple the ongoing reconciliation process in... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)

RT The Occupy Wall Street protests are a sure sign that people have begun to realize where the real power center of the United States rests, James Corbett, editor of the corbettreport.com website, told RT. “I think what is probably potentially transformative about this movement is the fact that they did not locate this on Washington,†he said. “It was not Occupy DC, it was Occupy Wall Street which I think shows the idea that the people are looking past the political theater that is taking place in Washington towards the real axis of political power which is located in... -Full Story- (rt.com - 02/10/11)

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey NATO and the press in the countries which house its bases seem to have gone quiet all of a sudden on Libya. Do they want us to think the war is over and that everything is getting back to "normal" or are they trying to focus on other stories hoping desperately that whatever is happening over there will go away? The first point is that nothing will go back to "normal" until the marauding bunch of terrorists which NATO is trying to impose as Libya's Government wholly and entirely against the will of the vast majority of its... -Full Story- (english.pravda.ru - 02/10/11)

By Shelton A. Gunaratne Professor of mass communications emeritus, Minnesota State University Moorhead Right-wing Republican backers, particularly the Tea Party troglodytes, disingenuously argue that the mixed economy of the United States (where privately owned businesses and government both play important roles) is the main reason for its current economic plight. They hold that deficits and debts would be a thing of the past if the Congress could make the U.S. a full-fledged free market economyâ€â€ÂÂmeaning a market free of government intervention as intended by the framers of the Constitution. However, what the Tea Party fails to do is to tell the public that... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)

See who is talking! Amnesty International has lambasted Canada year after year for its human rights violations against its indigenous peoples and having failed to implement the recommendations of UN human rights bodies concerning the protection of Indigenous peoples rights in Canada, pointing implicitly at implementing the land rights of the Lubicon Cree, the police shooting of Dudley... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)
Ira de Silva London, Ontario, Canada The Editor Globe & Mail Toronto, Ontario  Dear Sir:  It is interesting to note that Mr. J. Baird met a group of Tamil-Canadians two weeks ago and took complaints to Sri Lanka’s government. Perhaps this meeting also influenced Mr. Harper in the statements he has made regarding boycotting the meeting of the Commonwealth even though the decision regarding the Commonwealth meeting was made in 2009 when Mr . Harper was Prime Minister. In other words the Conservative Government has been influenced to change policy by the same Canadian citizens who during the days of Liberal... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/10/11)
