The country is facing a severe foreign exchange crisis. Our real foreign reserves are extremely low now. It seems the government has again resorted to keeping the Rs/US Dollar rate static (Rs 368 or around = US$1). For the moment, the government has no other option. I write with respect to Dr. Obesekera's article that appeared a couple of days ago in this forum. He, perhaps presented a novel concept for capturing free solar energy by the fisher folk. This seems to be practical. However storing sufficient energy is the problem as the technology to convert that energy by way of liquid hydrogen may be too complicated. Batteries to store energy may not be affordable to fishermen. However there can be other forms of energy that humanity not yet thought about. What Climate Change Should Have Taught Us Washington’s vaunted “rules-based international order” has undergone a stress test following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and here’s the news so far: it hasn’t held up well. In fact, the disparate reactions to Vladimir Putin’s war have only highlighted stark global divisions, which reflect the unequal distribution of wealth and power. Such divisions have made it even harder for a multitude of sovereign states to find the minimal common ground needed to tackle the biggest global problems, especially climate change. In fact, it’s... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 22/11/22)

This is a sequel to my previous article titled “Booker Prize, Chattel Slavery, Sugar, its Politics and Sri Lanka” posted on October 30 th 2022. In the last part of my article, “First Moon of Maali Almeida” I had quoted certain passages from the Booker Award winning novel “Seven Moons of Maali Almeida” to express that “The First Moon” is more than enough to get the Booker, why waste seven moons, you have already accomplished what you wanted, portraying your country as a killing field. Although I had stated that “a detailed critique... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 15/11/22)

Due to the current situation in the country, most hotels are trying to bring in local guests with attractive family weekend packages that include the use of the pool without additional cost. Recently, I attended a wedding at one of these hotels, and their pool was full of young and small kids, but nowhere to be seen as any lifeguard on duty. A couple of days ago, a 24-year-old young man drowned in one of the hotels in Mount Lavinia. What really led to the drowning? ... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 15/11/22)

The newly appointed Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), Dr. Sarath Obeysekera has called for immediate liberalisation of the shipping and logistics sectors in Sri Lanka. In a letter to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, he stated that there is a general consensus among the majority of stakeholders in the shipping industry for such a liberalisation policy. “I have observed that Sri Lanka has not really capitalised to reap the benefits of liberalisation, which was mooted a few years back, despite the fact that the island is located... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 15/11/22)

This year’s Olcott Speech at Ananda College by Thilan Wijesinghe was a refreshing presentation of what went wrong with the Sri Lankan economy. It was an apt topic given the fact that the school had produced many winners who decorated the nation with prestige and who saved the nation when under threat. The presentation contained plenty of factual matter and substance. However, it lacked the reasons for the outcomes presented in those charts. Though reasons may be politically and socially sensitive, unless these are addressed, the economic crisis will not end. Annual Economic Growth... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 15/11/22)

https://youtu.be/JCR-Phtgx0k Reports of Ukrainian triumph and imminent Russian defeat have flooded the West since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February. Yet how much merit is there to this narrative? Former US Marine Corps intelligence officer and UN weapons inspector William Scott Ritter Jr. speaks with Dimitri Lascaris in a special interview for The Real News. Despite taking some ground in September’s counteroffensive, the Ukrainian military has taken heavy losses and is totally dependent on external support. Moreover, Ritter argues that Ukraine’s objectives in this war are unachievable,... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 15/11/22)

The United States of America, unlike any other nation, maintains a massive network of foreign military installations around the world. How was this created and how is it continued? Some of these physical installations are on land occupied as spoils of war. Most are maintained through collaborations with governments, many of them brutal and oppressive governments benefiting from the bases’ presence. In many cases, human beings were displaced to make room for these military installations, often depriving people of farmland, adding huge amounts of pollution to local water systems and the air, and existing as an unwelcome presence. The edifice of a democratic government rests on three pillars the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. In Sri Lanka, there had been as many as 21 changes in the Constitution dealing with the powers of the executive and legislature. There were heated debates and profuse analyses on the issues involved in these themes. Similar but less frequent and less controversial reviews have been there on the Judiciary as well. Greed is a burning desire, unquenchable thirst, a craving and lust. People who are greedy want the objects of their desire to provide them with lasting satisfaction so they feel fulfilled, whole, and complete. Greed creates an inner hunger so that that they always seem to be striving towards an unattainable goal. They mistakenly believe their happiness is dependent upon that goal, but once they attain it they get no lasting satisfaction. (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka is still struggling to afford international fuel prices and is unable to fully procure the country’s requirements, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said. The cash-strapped country is still seeking financial assistance from oil-producing nations, but has yet to secure any aid apart from an existing deal with India, Wijesekera said Tuesday on the sidelines of the Adipec conference in Abu Dhabi. Sri Lanka’s financial crisis has been stretching on for months, impeding its ability to pay for food and fuel. “It’s very difficult for us to access... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/11/22)

According to official data, Sri Lanka's public sector now employs more than 1.5 million people, doubling in size over the previous 15 years.
