BBC Sinhala service head suspended
BBC Sinhala Service (Sandeshaya) head Priyath Liyanage who aired a news bulletin unfavourable to the controversial BBC World Service documentary “Sri Lanka’s Unfinished War†by Frances Harrison, has been suspended with immediate effect. Last October when I was in Colombo I gave several talks in symposia on Kidney disease, one of which was at the Gannoruwa Instittute of agriculture, while another symposium was at the Professional Institute in Colombo. Death of a Soldier
The tragic death of Michael McNeil of the Canadian Armed Forces has raised many questions. According to the news reports Warrant officer Michael McNeil who suffered from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) had committed suicide at the Canadian Forces Base Petawawa in Ontario. He was one of three Canadian soldiers to commit suicide this week. McNeil had a distinguished military career. Commemorating 'Terrorist day'
It is reported that TNA Jaffna District MP S. Sritharan, while participating in the second reading stage debate on Budget, has praised the dead LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran justifying violence saying that Prabhakaran was a national hero and called upon Tamils to commemorate his death. On a another report, the day the LTTE ‘war heroes’ day was commemorated the Chief Minister C.V Vigneswaran and several others remembered the lost war heroes at Jaffna educational office premises with a tree planting campaign. What archives? UK ordered destruction of ‘embarrassing’ colonial papers
Britain systematically destroyed documents in colonies that were about to gain independence, declassified Foreign Office files reveal. ‘Operation Legacy’ saw sensitive documents secretly burnt or dumped to cover up traces of British activities. The latest National Archives publication made from a collection of 8,800 colonial-era files held by the Foreign Office for decades revealed deliberate document elimination by British authorities in former colonies.
