Mahindapala  The news item in your newspaper (28/12) that ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga has been picked by the UNP to contest President Mahinda Rajapakse in the next election was predictable. At best she is the only candidate that has a chance of not winning but uniting the opposition. Her own party that made her a leading political figure has thrown her out. By Tassie Seneviratne Many a police investigation in high profile cases in Sri Lanka has failed due to high profile interference. As often happens in such cases, the head of state, the Inspector General of Police, and other powerful personalities take it upon themselves to direct investigations. The unfortunate feature then is the lack of professionalism, and how the investigations change course. Instead of starting the investigation from the scene of crime and finding admissible evidence that point to the culprits, the investigations start from a presumed accused and then look for clues to connect them to the crimes.... -Full Story- (sundaytimes.lk - 27/12/13)

This is because politicians have filled those vacancies with their henchmen’s children. It is a grave injustice not only to deserving students but also to taxpayers who finance the education ministry. However, instead of fixing the problem, the ministry has decided to remove the Year 5 Scholarship Exam altogether! P.A.Samaraweera, Melbourne LTTE sympathiser, Prof. Peter Salk of Sweden University in his address to the Tamil diaspora in London recently had stated that Sri Lanka is a Hindu country. There is no doubt that he had been well paid by the LTTE rump to make this statement. Since 2002, he had been a close ally of terrorist leader Prabhakaran. On the advise of the Tamil diaspora and picking up pieces from this statement, the TNA is now making a hue and cry. By H.L.D. Mahindapala It is just not possible to make a claim for statehood without first defining its physical borders. It is like making a claim for a piece of land: The claimant must have a deed which defines the boundaries. Consequently, all available evidence, including concoctions, is drawn specifically to outline the borders – real or unreal – as justification for the demand of a new State. This explains why the Vaddukoddians went all out first to concoct geographical borders needed to give some shape and form to their phantom Eelam. So was the American Olcott. Recently Arthur C. Clarke was given the same honour. I do not know whether Annie Besant was given such recognition by the Indian government. Bewilderingly diverse, South Asians comprise Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Afghans and others. One of the most unique and obscure parts of this large diaspora comprise people who arrived from the fabled island of Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon). The largest community of Sri Lankans in the U.S. (and the second-biggest concentration in North America after Toronto) can be found in the unlikely neighborhood of Tompkinsville in the northeastern corner of the borough of Staten Island in... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 10/12/13)
Shenali D Waduge When the country has allocated Rs.59million to send its delegation to Geneva in March 2013 to defend the country against mounting human rights allegations the simple question is why has it been so difficult to defend the country against terrorists – banned by the very nations making the allegations? The reason for his cancelation of visa was that Paul Harris was critical of the 2002 Cease Fire Agreement and the LTTE. By Garvin Karunaratne, Ph.D., former G.A. Matara The warning given to Sri Lanka at the CHOGM by the British Premier tells me that the International Community wants to have a Regime Change. This can be said to be due to the fact that President Rajapaksa was firm and could not be moved to stop battling the LTTE in 2009. That also is indicative of the sinister motives of the SuperPowers. They wanted to have an LTTE State in a portion of Sri Lanka. Perhaps the manner in which the LTTE diaspora is accepted with open arms by the Superpowers... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 08/12/13)

UNP will not win elections because it does not command the Buddhist vote. The tragedy is that it does not even care to consider championing the Buddhist cause. The reason is plain and simple and explains why over the years it has forgotten the arithmetic realities of how parties can win elections and why parties win elections.  A leader who wants to celebrate... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 05/12/13)

Rita Perera At present, not a day seems to go by when an increasing number of wrongs, even crimes, committed not by criminals but by some of our politicos are highlighted. Thankfully, it was not always so! Hence, it is refreshing to look back on an era, still within our living memory, of people who were willing to risk even their lives, in the interests of others in their country. Maybe it is wishful thinking that all is not lost and true values, such as, selflessness and true patriotism are not quite dead yet. Â I am personally... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 05/12/13)
Dr. Mareena Thaha Reffai,Vanderwert Place, Dehiwela The anti mosquito campaign is a failure is a foregone conclusion, proved not only by the ever increasing number of cases of Dengue and malaria but also be the way the government officials go about taking action. Once in a blue moon, suddenly there will be a flurry of activity from the officials and every house in a particular area will be visited and those who had even a coconut shell with stagnant water will be hauled up in the courts to pay heavy fines – fair enough. But the mosquitoes must be... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 05/12/13)
By James Slack Timid politicians with a -misplaced- fear of offending Muslims have allowed Islamist extremism to take root in the institutions of Britain, the Prime Minister warned yesterday. Anura Seneviratna. There is an old saying, “ if leaders are great, the nation follows its exampleâ€. In an impartial close look at the island country of Sri Lanka , the nation of Sinhela people hold the indigenous heritage to the country in all its sovereign entirety. Indeed, the Sinhela people are the nation in the Island Country nicknamed as Sri Lanka. Hence, the national sovereignty of the Sinhela nation is inalienable and inviolable just as much as with every nation of every sovereign country. Tragically, the Sinhela nation inherited anti-national leaders as a direct impact of numerous intrusions of... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 04/12/13)
Dr.Tilak Fernando There is an educated chap, Sri Lankan in fact, with a PhD in Chemistry who presently lives in London. He has been obsessed with the idea of getting through to the public and governments in the UK and Sri Lanka to demonstrate a new invention of his, which he says could cut down on energy wastage. My good friend, Dr. Hector Perera, has gone crazy over his new theory that he is determined to get across to some governmental authorities or private institutions. Out of his enthusiasm, he has been writing incessantly to... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 04/12/13)
by Gomin Dayasri  A sigh of relief - CHOGM is mercifully over – but watch for the fall out. Whether a supporter or detractor: unconcerned or uncommitted: that is immaterial- it is the aftermath that matters.  Did we accelerate the process Navi Pillay is trying to initiate at Geneva 2014 in taking our troops before an international inquiry on accountability? Did CHOGM provided a stage for the local/foreign hatemongers to perform to discredit the national image? Did Sri Lanka display to the dignitaries, the value of the peace dividend and its rewarding nature to all ethnicities making Sri Lanka... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/12/13)
by Shenali D. Waduge  At some stage or the other the people of Sri Lanka would need to sit down and carefully deliberate over exactly what and who contributed and continues to contribute towards steadily reversing the great victory of the Ranaviru in defeating terrorism in Sri Lanka in May 2009.  Some agreements that had either been authored or agreed to sign on behalf of Sri Lanka have virtually sealed Sri Lanka’s fate. Before we accuse external sources of attempting to destabilize the country we need to look inward, without bias and identify objectively from a country-centric point of view... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/12/13)

Shared by East and West.  The late historian and former World War Two-era Army platoon commander, Paul Fussell (1989), explained that “the allied war has been sanitized and romanticized almost beyond recognition†particularly because it is commonly viewed as a just war (p. ix).... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/12/13)
JAYANTHA GUNASEKERA British PM Cameron is adopting a "holier than thou" attitude in the belief that the rest of the world is unaware of war crimes committed by Britain. They joined hands with the USA to commit these crimes. Britain is unashamedly playing poodle to the USA as if Britain is its satellite. This is similar to PM Cameron taking orders from the LTTE diaspora. It is reported that PM Cameron descended to the level of meeting members of the Global Tamil Forum, the spokespersons of... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/12/13)
Dilrook Kannangara Canada boycotted the November 2013 CHOGM summit in Colombo alleging human rights violations by Sri Lanka. However, this fake concern for human rights by Canada fell apart just a few days later! On November 25th, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution naming 2014 as the ‘Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.’ 110 nations voted in favour; 7 opposed and 54 abstained. The great self proclaimed champion of human rights – Canada – voted against it along with six (6) other countries including Israel (the perpetrator), Australia, USA and de facto US territories. If... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/12/13)
Shripal Nishshanka The shame and disgrace which our leaders did and do by borrowing shall be stopped with immediate effect. Budget deficit and paralyzing of country could conveniently be ceased had the intelligence of the leaders be utilized. Consult brainy financial advisors and from this budget onwards the procedures should be implemented to achieve a surplus. Otherwise the leaders better be resigned. Commendable achievements could be resulted in many and various fields, for the integrity and united country. The principles of Buddhism which the Shri Lankan constitute legitimizes are the basis of noble development of Shri Lanka whilst every... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 01/12/13)
By Garvin Karunaratne. Ph.D. I am perturbed to hear that CDU is found to have spread to the North Western Province, This disease has already caused the deaths of at least ten thousand people in the North Central Province and though this has been investigated by local as well as international institutions like the WHO, the spread has not yet been arrested. It appears to me that no definite course of action has been taken because of conflicting advise and in view of the fact that the advice has been offered by authorities of repute it is not... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 01/12/13)

Dear Editor, Prime Minister John Key's not supporting further inquiries on Sri Lanka at the CHOGM , is similar to the stand of all fifty three members of the Commonwealth including India whose PM stayed away, bar Canada and the UK. Britain systematically destroyed documents in colonies that were about to gain independence, declassified Foreign Office files reveal. ‘Operation Legacy’ saw sensitive documents secretly burnt or dumped to cover up traces of British activities. The latest National Archives publication made from a collection of 8,800 colonial-era files held by the Foreign Office for decades revealed deliberate document elimination by British authorities in former colonies. The secret program dubbed ‘Operation Legacy’ was in force throughout the 1950s and 1960s, in at least 23 countries and territories under British rule that eventually gained independence after WWII. Among others these countries included: Belize, British... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 01/12/13)
