The Prime Ministers Abrogation
Of Responsibilities Towards Peace Process And Its Fallout Needs Resolution
With No Cause For Panic!
Some interesting fallout is being observed within Sri Lanka by way
of Tamil Political Party concerns as a result of the recent developments
in Parliament and the Presidential move which has annexed the areas
of Defence, Information and Communications which are being hotly contested
by the Prime Minister regardless of the pros and cons involved which
suggest the Constitutional Validity of the move which can be deemed
none but fortuitous for the Nation and well timed by the President.
Now that the Tamil Parties have been jarred into their senses about
the non availability of these areas to play their own patriot games
in while paying homage to the LTTE they have synonymously revealed an
achilles heel in their veiled support for the LTTE which they should
be concerned about towards their own posterity, reason enough to work
towards the formation of a Tamil Community of Sri Lanka unrepresented
by the LTTE where a greater momentum in this direction would be justly
rewarded if they were to denounce the LTTE in one voice and help resolve
the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka by being Sri Lankans first and Tamils
collectively as one of the integral parts of the infrastructure of Sri
Lanka citizens together with the Sinhalese, Muslim and other communities
where the LTTE would be an insignificant entity left to their own destiny
which must have direct links with the meting out of justice as the ultimate
reality!
Perhaps it is time appropriate for the Sri Lankan Tamil Community to
re-consider taking a stance to create a non LTTE represented Community
which needs a bit of bravado, courage on their part and easier said
than done as it would mean confronting the LTTE (with a little help
from ' friends' naturally) despite their threats and challenging their
right to represent the Tamil Community while proving to the Nation that
they the Tamil Community of Sri Lanka do not wish to be aligned with
an outlawed Terrorist Group while fortifying their rights as normal
law abiding citizens, part of the infrastructure of an Independent Democratic
Sri Lanka and none other.
In their present identity indeed they could quite understandably be
concerned that the Prime Minister's statement calling on the President
to take over the entire Peace Process and the ceasefire agreement with
the LTTE, jeopardises their convictions towards the LTTE as it takes
away the balance of UNF conciliations which once seemed to weigh heavily
in their favour and furthermore throws into confusion what the future
may hold in store for them if the presentation of the Peace Process
is taken over by President which though it may not augur well for the
LTTE is a move in the right direction perhaps for the Nation where the
Prime Minister seems poised to jump ship together with a few notable
ship jumpers within his camp!
Notwithstanding their rather futile faith in the LTTE as champions,
futile for the Tamil Community as there is no logical or rational conclusions
that will ever materialise in Sri Lanka where any kind of power will
be legally attributed to a terrorist group who maintain their identity
and continue their nefarious activities on an on going basis which has
now become an indelible reality which has even been observed by the
International Community.
Until such time as the LTTE relent, come clean, atone for their crimes
and are contrite enough to hand over their Interpol and Indian Government
sought after criminal leader to the long arm of justice ( if such a
scenario ever transpired ) the impasse of a deadlocked Peace Process
perhaps will continue although it can neither be subjected to intimidation
by the irresponsibilities of the Prime Minister nor any inappropriate
conjecture by loose minded supportives of the LTTE suggesting a return
to war as it would merely hasten their demise rather than contribute
towards any beneficial outcome for Sri Lanka something which has to
be borne in mind by all concerned, particularly the staus quo whether
or not it changes hands!
There seems to be no cause for panic in as far as the Peace Accord is
concerned should the representation of the Majority Sinhalese Leadership
and Chief Negotiator change hands as there should be no variation to
the implications and expectations of what is being sought and none other
than a lasting peace for all Sri Lankans albeit the ensuing change of
policy towards a change in format a consideration!
That there is an impediment in the form of the LTTE and their personal
objectives and idealogies to deal with also cannot alter what has been
accomplished thus far as the Nation recovers from decades of strife
and anguish where perhaps the need to confront this issue and resolve
it through the co-operation of the Tamil Community unrepresented by
the LTTE as one of primary importance and may be the eventual trump
card towards a victory for lasting peace where only the unity of all
Communities would ensure its accomplishment.
The Prime Minister when signing the ceasefire agreement was once quoted
as saying " he was doing it on the mandate given by the people
of the country." A wave of sentiment across the Nation agrees that
while the Prime Minister has committed himself to continue the Peace
Process he cannot abrogate responsibility now for purposes of power
politics and ignore the mandate he had acted on if his sincerities towards
the Nation are to be interpreted as patriotic!
If the original signatory to the Peace Process and M o U the Prime Minister
has now chosen to opt out of his responsibilities, while it throws him
in poor light, the irresponsible action calls for higher authority to
take on the reins and monitor the needs of Sri Lankas Peace Process
while guiding it to a safe harbour
