Internal LTTE Conflict In Eastern Sri Lanka Needs Immediate Resolution! An alarming situation has presented itself towards threatening National
Security as a result of the infighting between the two LTTE factions
of Karuna and Pirapaharan in Eastern Sri Lanka, one which needs Governmental
remedying post haste before it escalates beyond control into a fully
fledged breakdown of the Ceasefire and the Peace which has lasted for
over 2 years. The so called Sacandinavian Peace Monitors too seem to be somewhat circumspectly non-committal and have hardly raised a whisper to indicate that what is taking place in the East is not only illegal as far as Sri Lanka's statutes are concerned but also a direct violation of the Peace Process and Ceasefire to which there was great pontification by the LTTE proper as well as the monitors themselves at the outset which now indicates great hypocrisies and insincerities which seem to have sent all aspects of peace and tranquility tumbling by the wayside as the World and the Nation watches in dumbfounded disbelief. For his part the leader of the previous Administration too is maintaining a stiff upperlip somewhat ironically considering the role he played towards hoodwinking the Nation of his capabilities to deal with the LTTE who now seem to be running amok in the East! The internal armed conflict of the LTTE which once was an insurrection against a legitimate Sovereign Government has now been transformed into one where LTTE factions are pitted against each other to resolve a power struggle at Sri Lanka's expense . Heavy casualties are indicated on both sides despite the marginal statistics presented to the world as innocent civilians too are being caught in the crossfire and heavy weaponry used without any discretions towards legality as though these high handed terrorists own the part of Sri Lanka they have chosen to stage their dogfights in! There are reports that heavy artillery and military hardware are being moved and used by the LTTE with impunity and rank disregard for the so called ceasefire that was initiated by the previous Administration and has been totally disregarded by the LTTE in a manner indicating the incapacity of the LTTE towards simple definition of elementary accords which would normally place the needs of the Sovereign Nation over those of their own and while there is a distinctly felt need for this conflict to be put down in no uncertain terms in the best interests of Sri Lanka it may also lead the Armed Forces into a catch 22 situation which has to be viewed with great caution notwithstanding inevitable eventualities should lines of defence be crossed by the rebels or military statutes violated which would be a huge dilemma for the Authorities but one needing immediate attention! This is indeed a time for the coming together of all the powers that be and the great minds who have unanimously indicated great displeasure at everything the LTTE stood for, as illegal proscribed terrorists and the longer there seems to be prevarication towards taking a positive step towards resolving what now appears to be a crisis of daunting implications towards Sri Lanka's post election progress the more difficult it would be to contain and quell what many have defined as a threat to the Nation as well as the Region. Quite appropriately an astute media source has asked ''Why isn't anyone giving a damn about this situation? ' to which the answer unequivocally may be " The protocols are probably being sorted out as well as an eventual strategy which cannot undermine the Peace Process yet ambiguous if Peace has to be restored at the price of confrontation " which is the last thing any Administration would want to resort to given the circumstances but may be pushed to as a last resort !! It is fervently hoped and prayed for that this will not be the case and that the crisis in the East will be resolved without compromising the Nation's Security or its Armed Forces and that the situation is dealt with astutely where the justifications of sane dialogue and negotiations towards ongoing Peace though now somewhat violated should be the first priorities which considering past experiences with the LTTE could nonetheless prove to be somewhat daunting and may require a joint taskforce of imposing proportions! |
