UPFA The Most Likely Source Towards Resolving Sri Lanka's Problems. The latest reports which indicate that the LTTE and the Sri Lankan
Army have agreed to uphold a two-year-old ceasefire and resume negotiations
from where they were left off at the juncture of the impasse during
the previous administration of Ranil Wickremasinghe augurs well for
the newly elected UPFA Government of President Chandrika Bandaranaike
Kumaratunga who now has the somewhat daunting but accomplishable task
of fulfilling her election pledge to restart the stalled peace negotiations
with the Tamil Tigers on terms conducive not only to the two sides involved
on a mutually agreed basis but also to the satisfaction of the voters
who returned her to power as part of Sri Lanka's freedom loving inhabitants
with great expectations for the future. Categorically it is an affront to the Sovereign Democratic Nation of
Sri Lanka as well as its Armed Forces (if accutrately interpreted) to
have conceded to an acknowledgement of territorial rights to an entity
without any official mandate to do so within the territory of a Sovereign
Nation! where the assumptions far supercede reality, but for the sake
of peace perhaps interpretable as discretionary, a better part of valour
and no more and the assumption of " Control of the Eastern Region
" a figure of speech which may need putting into proper perspective
once the dust settles! There are however conflicting reports that the
LTTE have resumed their 'Policing Systems ' in these areas and probably
needs verification and elimination if necessary as an obligatory measure
toward establishing the insignificances of such actions which bifurcate
the rights to Sovereignity of a Sovereign Nation and attempt to ridicule
a Democratic Establishment and identifiable as typical puerile LTTE
modus operandi ! On another note of importance the present Government despite the hoopla and hype in the media has to realistically consider the lack of a working majority which its UPFA have not as yet successfully established within parliament as a concern albeit progressive signs prevailing that the JHU (Jathika Hela Urumaya ) will eventually be the catalyst towards this majority or as an alternative perhaps even a breakaway faction of the defeated UNF which will lend great credibilities towards national unity and an unshakable majority which Sri Lanka needs to assert towards a healthy future as the ongoing dissentments and conflicts within the coalition of the SLFP /JVP Alliance which are not fully resolved could leave open many avenues for those in opposition to the President's policies to exploit situations to their own advantage which the ever opportunistic former UNF representations and its leadership as well as the LTTE are undoubtedly on the lookout for and could easily rekindle the great insatabilities the Nation has experienced in the past where the error margin for repetition is now surely zero! Despite the circumspect manner in which the JHU, the majority Buddhist Community and its Clergy as well as the JVP view them, the Norwegian Peace Monitors have resumed their stalled operations once again as it is reported that they have travelled to the East to facilitate the Peace Talks and time will tell whether their presence will be of the essence towards the much needed Peace as their conduct in the past indicated many partisan leanings towards the LTTE and whether they indeed are a refurbished entity with a new image of impartial attitudes which will be a matter to be concluded based purely on their presentation which some analysts seem to express doubts about with great cynicism and disdain while acknowledging also that the known devil is perhaps better than an unknown one! In the words of one of their monitors Preben Rasmussen quote unquote" The parties agreed to restore relations and to meet on a regular basis " which this time around is hoped will extend beyond the scope of mere rhetoric and holidaymaking as has been the case in much of the past Norwegian efforts other than many suspicions of interference with Governmental Policy matters and snitching on classified SL Government operational information to the LTTE! This time around the Leader of the Monitoring Mission Trend Furuhovde has expressed confidence towards positive progress in their objectives towards a lasting peace where in the eyes of the more discerning there can be no room for their past inconsistencies or partisan biases towards the LTTE which further complicated an already complicated situation at the expense of the taxpayer and the Sri Lankan Government. To reiterate, the Road ahead for the new Government appears somewhat rocky and thorny and faced with many unresolved core issues left behind as the legacy of the previous Government towards restoring Sri Lanka to some degree of acceptability within the Global Communityas well as in the region as a trouble free Sovereign Nation with a penchant for progress into the 21st century but if ever any Administration came close towards possessing the leadership, tools and wherewithal to accomplish it, the present UPFA has to be the likely source.
