The Urgency With Which Britain Objects To The Ceasefire Abrogation Put In Perspective As Interference!

Jan.19th 2008

Why the sudden conscientious objections by Britain in calling for an urgent ceasefire in Sri Lanka to enable the country to find a negotiated political solution to the ethnic conflict one wonders ? or is this once again meddling into the internal affairs of a Sovereign Nation plagued by terrorism.

Britain should contain the recent emotional outburst tantamount to this and restrict their concerns to what goes on within the United Kingdom where more and more terrorist cells are uncoverd with the passage of time and concern herself to matters more pressing at home if it is such a hard thing to support Sri Lanka in eliminating its terrorist scourge before any negotiations can take place which is exactly what the Government of Sri Lanka's present direction is.

Talking about a new ceasefire seems like direct interference into Sri Lankan Government policy where Britain has no right to make such bold assertions along with the latest group of actors, members of the performing arts and others disposed towards definitive theatrics banding together to downcry Sri Lanka's stand against terrorism which renders this theme of initiating a ceasefire in a war of mandatory priorities worthless as opposed to running to ground the ruthless terrorists who still continue to murder and target innocent civilians.

In this sense Britain should put up what is needed by Sri Lanka in her hour of distress at the hands of the LTTE terrorists or shut up! This is probably one of the reasons why the terrrorists continue to believe there may be some repreive for them regardless of what they represent to the region as well as the whole world as terrorists and the only language thay would surely understand is the Sri Lankan Governments unconditional effort to wipe them out and perhaps language Britain needs to absorb too as comprehensive!

The rhetoric from the British Foreign office echoed by its representative Kim Howells who has gained a fair degree of notoriety for what many interpret as meddling into matters Sri Lankan suggests that "means must be constructed as quickly as possible if we are to make progress.'' But as to what that progress is, for as long as the terrorists are permitted any concessions within Sri Lanka seems more of a hampered progress interfered into by many undesirable sources for all the wrong reasons and the priority towards moving the obstacles towards progress becomes imperative and entails those interfering in addition to the terrorists!

The end of the ceasefire agreement as interpreted by the British Foreign Office a la Kim Howells rather than being a confirmation that 'we' have entered a dangerous new phase in Sri Lanka,' as Howells has bluntly told the House of Commons at the end of a debate on the developing situation in Sri Lanka seems to indicate an all important lack of insight into the priority of removing the LTTE scourge completely at a time where the Government has the wherewithal to do so and suggests exactly what many of Howell's furious critics insist vehemently that he is an interfering source who is probably spurred on by Tamil Diaspora and LTTE supportives rather than someone concerned for Sri Lanka's well being.

It may be prudent for the Government of Sri Lanka to ignore this individual's euphemisms along with his buddies in accordance, theorising the merits of negotiations with terrorists and focus on the viewpoints of more logical sounding members of the British parliament as well as the senate and their questionings as to why Britain has in the past and even at present continue to tolerate Tamil Tiger activity, front organizations and their proliferation within Britain which seems more relevant to the stance Sri Lanka herself has taken to eliminate them.

It also seems unfortunate the the British diplomatic representation in Sri Lanka vis a vis its High Commission has had the gall to describe the conflict in Sri Lanka as ''appalling' and regretted Colombo's unilateral abrogation of the six-year-old 'internationally-backed' (in parts rather than the sum of !) and the Norway-brokered truce pact Jan 3" where these critics need to be educated about the real role Norway played in pandering to the LTTE and the farcial nature of the ceasefire which merely provided the terrorists many platforms towards regrouping and the Armed forces shackled synonymously.

What the British High Commission and the likes of Kim Howell fail to perceive is that not only was the ceasefire agreement imperfect and flawed but it was a sickening proviso against everything which stood for peace and progress due to the mendacities of the terrorists,' and regardless of their cacophony is a fact of life which can only be fully understood through the sufferings of the Sri Lankan people rather than through Philistine interpretations of certain British big wigs in Parliament, her diplomats or the Foreign Office!!

There's little consolation that at the end of the British Foreign Office's rhetorical display it has also admitted courtesy of the Howells clarion that at the present moment, there was 'little substance around which to base negotiations' but he has stressed that the international community 'must clearly continue to stay engaged, stop the violence and help the Sri Lankan Government build a credible environment for a sustainable peace process'.Is the gentleman speaking in riddles one wonders here!

Indeed it is true that having chosen to end the ceasefire, the Sri Lankan Government has a clear responsibility to live up to the commitment to address the grievances of all minorities predominantly entailing those of the oppressed Tamil people particularly in the North and East of the Nation but an issue which has to be taken up after the Government's policy to do away with the unrelenting terrorists who are not a viable representation of the Sri Lankan Tamils has been successfully implemented.

This could only be accomplished to the greatest measure of success if there was no foreign interference from sources which now appear to be sympathetic towards the terrorists rather than the Sovereign Nation of Sri Lanka and unable to differentiate between the terrorists and peace loving ordinary Tamil citizens, a majority of whom have unequivocally repudiated the entire concept of a Velupillai Prabhakaran led terrorist faction as their champions!
