Permitting EU Representative Patten To Visit Wanni For Meeting With LTTE's Pirapaharan, Deplorable !

The tides of fortune which sometimes favour personalities of questionable repute seem to have favoured former Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten whose appointment as Commissioner of External Relations in the European Union was initially frowned upon by the critics of the EU as he has been regarded by many as a Bureaucratic impersonator of diplomacy politely ignored by the Chinese in not paying too many accolades as he exited the last British Bastion of Colonialism who now seems poised to do a bit of meddling in Sri Lankan internal affairs as he wends his way into Sri Lanka heading for the Wanni and perhaps better off stopped in his tracks and gently reminded that he is headed to insurgent territory, asked what his mission really is and whether he has any right to his mission having berated the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka, the President?

While Britain and the European Union recognizes what appears to be his pompous office and officiousness, the majority Sinhala Nation does not, which has to do with national pride and dignity which the EU Representative seems to be ignorant of and would not command much respect if he has chosen to backhand the President and openly criticize her.

Someone by rights who should in reality refuse Mr Patten's entry into Sri Lanka on the grounds that he has no jurisdiction or authority to conduct any negotiations with the nefarious leader of an internationally banned terrorist organization regardless of the mild aberration of protocol it may promote as the first stone has seemingly been cast by him at the President who has every right to retaliate. It may be argued within reason that there is neither any obligation from Sri Lanka to the EU to lay out a red carpet to its terrorist seekers nor any reason to capitulate to its requests regardless.

It may also be asked "what business it is of the European Union to question the decisions of the President relative to the removal of three cabinet ministers and the proroguing of Parliament which are entirely internal matters which need no interference by outside representation whether it be the European Union, Norway the World Bank, International Monetary Fund or any other entity for that matter as the nature of President's wisdom in the acctions taken have recieved many accolades from many areas both nationally and internationally on the conclusion that they involved the preservation of Sovereignity and territorial Integrity regardless of the bleatings of the incumbent UNF Administration and perhaps the LTTE that is is a hinderance to the Peace Process which by far is turning out to be a joke as the Nation is poised to reject its latest format in LTTE colours as totally unacceptable!

Dictatorial sounding in its address the demand of the European Union urging that the President must work together with the democratically elected Government and the Prime Minister is not an expression that should have been directed without a Sine Qua Non involving the LTTE's illegitimacy and their unrelenting attitude towards maintaining their Terrorist infrastructure as the very precepts of democracy involving the Sovereignity and Territorial Integrity of Sri Lanka have been threatened by the incumbent Administration through its conciliations to the LTTE and fast becoming a reality unacceptable to the Nation.
It appears that the European Union representative Patten has set out on a mission impossible with the terrorist group rather than initiate any moves beneficial to Sri Lanka and the call by many discerning citizens to rescind and restrict any surreptitious meetings in the Wanni with the banned Terrorist Group and their Leader by any foreign dignitary, a just one as it involves many aspects of security and the direction in which a Sovereign Nation is pursuing its future where any negotiations must be contained within the demands of the Country's Constitution and its Justice System and does not entitle the European Unions External Relations Representative to criticize the President nor dabble in the Internal Affairs of Sri Lanka which he is appearing to be poised to do!
In quoting Patten as saying "I want to use the trip to see for myself the chances of a speedy resolution of the current impasse," end quote, there seems to be a certain bravado and hollow self confidence in his delivery and rhetoric which overrules the reality of any capability on his part to resolve a situation which has been set into impasse by the inconsistencies of the Administration to carry out responsibilities towards the preservation of the Nation in the long term and perhaps precious little he or anyone with a whimsical evaluation of the rights of the Executive President could accomplish and best advised to lay off or his ambitions simply shut down!
Mr Patten should also bear in mind that the intricate complexities of the situation in Sri Lanka is a far cry from Hong Kong which was administered through colonial rule and investitures of a far different nature than present day Sri Lanka where the threat posed to Hong Kong during his tenure as Governor was somewhat different though equally imposing yet from a source which bore the hallmark of officialdome rather than illegitimacy and that there were no overtures from any other organization to correct what many at the time seemed to view as a desperate need to salvage Hong Kong from Communist Rule where nothing was done about it or the concept ever interfered with by well wishers!!
The only role which any foreign advisor or intermediary should by rights be involved in, within Sri Lanka or any other sovereignity plagued by terrorism, anarchy and a threat towards Sovereignity and Territorial Integrity is one which if it is logically possible, towards being a deterrent to armed aggression or the manifestation of dogma relative towards its justification with intent to pursue it and the capability to persuade the terrorists to denounce idealogies towards secession , decommission weapons and come forward into mainstream society in all sincerity and it is doubtful if theEuropean Union's Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten or any other critic of Presidential authority could accomplish this and hence probably wasting his time
Almost in hindsight the Island Newspaper in its latest Editorial has condemned Mr. Patten's intended visit to the Wanni. Quoting the daily Newspaper it has been said that"Given Pirapaharan's murderous track record, including the assassination of President RPremadasa of Sri Lanka and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and attempts on the life of the Present President, Patten should not be meeting him.Meeting him and also greeting him on his birthday would be an "insult" to Sri Lanka and India," the paper has said.
Permitting the Patten infiltration into the Vanni towards a meeting with a banned terror leader would suggest the tolerance of a double standard of International Accords where the rest of the ruthless terrorists such as Al Quaeda are being sought after towards justice and preferentially and somewhat incredulously a terrorist who has inflicted so much grief and damage to Sri Lanka is being pampered to and payed homage to rather than himself being brought to justice for crimes against Sri Lanka and India and perhaps the world!
