Co-Chairs May Have Caused More Distress Than Relief And Complicated The President's Direction!

As maintained by many discerning analysts who have mulled over the many issues relating to the restoration of a normal order within Sri Lanka and Peace as the primary objective, the scenario unfolding within Sri Lanka involving Norway as Peace Facilitators and the attitude of the main Co- Chairs of donor aid ,the USA, Japan, Norway, the UK and the European Union is fast becoming a farce to use a bit of wordplay here as the LTTE terrorists continue in gay abandon their devil may care existence, the occassional baring of toothless fangs by its political activists and the onward march unabated towards their separatist goals even surreptitiously at times perhaps.

So why all the innuendo and theatrics? There has ben a mild response from the President of Sri Lanka, a kind of voice in the wilderness entreaty to the co- chairs cited to “exert more pressure on the LTTE” to honour the terms and conditions of the Ceasefire Agreement." which despite the weak repartee is an expression of what needs to be done to quell the present terrorist activities and perhaps greater incentives are needed to keep the LTTE in check rather than dance to their every tune at their beck and call through legitimizing their very existence in their present terrorist attire!

Relevant case in point may be exemplified by the latest credible information recieved that despite the tough talking of President Kumaratunga, her Government has caved in to give protection to the LTTE cadres moving through Government areas.

Two Security Officers were detailed to escort Ellilan, the district head of Amparai, in a LTTE van on Saturday as he was transported for medical attention in Killinochchi and if there is a bifurcation of principles involved here the onus of any fallout must surely rest on who has made such a decision and the laments about LTTE illegitimacy a mere forgotten expression of protest by legal definition contradicted byt the Legislature of Sri Lanka and none other!

In the most obtuse manner imaginable by an LTTE representative who is now drawing close scrutiny by the British Authorities by virtue of the heinous terrorist attacks in London. It seems puerile that Anton Balasingham has had the affront to' reject' resuming talks with the Government of Sri Lanka as expressed through another objectionable intermediary Norway's Eric Solheim who tends to hang around Sri Lankan matters in the manner of a bad smell and has been ludicrously asked by Balasingham to 'stabilise' the ceasefire before any negotiations could begin.

It sounds very much like an entreaty to the Sri Lankan Government via Solheim to hold off any retaliatory moves towards quelling the latest renewed LTTE attrocities in the North and North East while they take up positions, rebuild their bunkers, establish airstrips and regroup and about time perhaps that the co-chairs amongst other powers of imprtance are confronted over the issue at hand namely why the LTTE arent met head on and in full force rather than by token measure with bleatings such as the refusal to dispense funds due to their proscriptions and classification as terrorists.

There definitely seems to be something more tangible needed at this stage to disillusion the LTTE that their game is up and that they are headed nowhere other than towards self destruction if their current attrocities against Sovereign Sri Lanka continue.

It seems totally perplexing that terror is condemned globally as all international forces rally towards the imperative need to put down terrorism, yet a small group of 'privileged terrorists' the creators of the suicide bomber concept wreaking havoc around the world today are granted legitimacy within the confines of Sri Lanka !

The continued statistics pouring in on a daily basis indicate the alarming violation of the Ceasefire Agreement, irrevocable evidence of many LTTE killings of Tamil dissidents and the deteriorating situation in the East with LTTE now targeting soldiers and policemen which in reality points to the LTTE as harbingers of evil and the centrifugal force pivoting the disruption of the all important peace so desperately sought after by the Sri Lankan authorities!

It has also become blatantly obvious as revealed in a news bulletin "that the Co-Chairs did not focus on the critical consequences arising from those acts in their statement. Instead, they took up the LTTE line and demanded that the Government should (1) disarm the “paramilitaries” (meaning those opposed to the LTTE) and (2) provide security for the LTTE to move across freely in government-controlled areas," making a mockery of the state of affairs within Sovereign Sri Lanka that a miserable outfit of internationally condemned terrorists still continue to call the shots!

While her President in desperation is forced to run around waving olive branches to the international community, and made to dance to the tunes of the co- chairs rather than take a hardline stance far removed from palavering to the terrorists as though they are licensed to kill, maim amd have their way rather than being put down as vermin detrimental to a Sovereign Nation and its peace loving inhabitants!

The same bulletin as quoted from the Asian Tribumne has revealed that"Political observers were critical of the Co-Chairs' utter indifference to the crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the LTTE.

Evidence collected by NGOs reveals that even after the Co-Chairs issued their statement on July 19, 2005 the LTTE had brazenly defied the call the stop the killings and went on a rampage killing civilians and security personnel whilst asking for security for their cadres to move in government-controlled areas.

LTTE’s increasing preparations for the next round of war is seen in (1) highly provocative acts of targeting soldiers and policemen – a new trend in the post-Ceasefire Agreement phase and (2) increasing abduction of children as recruits to the pot-bellied and aging army of the LTTE.

Analyst agree that the LTTE must continue to abduct children because the original cadres who joined with Prabhakaran are reaching the retiring age, or have deserted with Col. Karuna’s split. Political observers are most concerned that despite the mounting evidence the Co-Chairs have not taken a single step to effectively restrain the LTTE.

" ending quote which further testifies to the stark reality of what the LTTE are getting away with as a result of the sheer complaisance of the co- chairs which appear to have given Carte Blanche to the terrorists while a helpless Administration looks on where finally the President by her latest dialogue as addressed to the Co- Chairs and the International Community appears to have realized that perhaps her conciliations to the LTTE in her quest for peace has taken on the same intonations with similar reprisals which the previous administration chose to and one which she so vehemently opposed !

Perhaps she has finally conceded that it is up to her and her political allies to correct the trajectory of Sri Lankas' current political direction hurtling in a somewhat disastrous path where she may have to cast aside preferential treatement to the will and might of her foreign peers and focus her attentions towards a more rational Fait Acompli than subsidizing terrorists!
