Why this sinister “hate-Muslim” campaign now? .

There is a growing feeling and fear among the islandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Muslims that a sinister campaign has been underway inciting Sinhalese against them. This campaign, involving eight Sinhalese language websites and ten English language sites, portray the islandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Muslim community as a threat to Sinhalese, Buddhism, Sinhalese culture and the country as a whole.

Latest is an article on 1915 Riots in a Sinhala language daily, pitting the two communities at a time when every effort should be made to bring the communities together, is certainly not in the best interest of anyone.

Apart from the print media an age old campaign has also been underway against cattle slaughter to rouse anti Muslim hysteria. This is quite open and there are bill boards urging to stop cattle slaughter of what they describe as ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-milk giving motherƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

The irony is that this orchestrated campaign by a handful of racists show that they have learned no lessons from the recent past.

Alarmed at the vicious nature of the campaign a group of Muslim professionals, religious scholars, youths and others are planning to bring this to the notice of President Mahinda Rajapakse and all responsible elements in the Sinhalese community including the clergy.

All what the country needed now is to seek every possible means to help bring communities together to move the country ahead. Instead this potentially destructive campaign takes the country back to the recent dark years which we hope are done with for the good of all citizens.

In the recent past racist elements often said that ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-we will deal first with the Tamils and then take care of MuslimsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. Now that the Tamils are weakened following the LTTE defeat, Muslims ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ begin to question whether the racist elements are turning their guns on them.

It is common knowledge that some racists openly demand that the Tamils leave for Tamilnad and Muslims go to Saudi Arabia leaving the island only to Sinhala Buddhists. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

There were also several reports of incidents threatening mosques including attack on Muslims at prayer in Kurunegala district. A principal of a leading girlƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s school in Colombo, named after a late prime minister, has told a Muslim woman, an old girl of the same school and aƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  lawyer, not to enter the school premises wearing shalwar kameez-one of the most decent dresses for women in the world. If this is kind of racism can be found in the seat of learning what could one expect from students.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

The irony is that such activities, in complete violation of Buddhist teachings, have been committed by a small number claiming to be ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ guardians of Buddhism. Earlier they realized the reality that Sri Lanka is a multi racial, multi religious, multi lingual and multi cultural country where Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and all others inevitably need to live together for the betterment of all of us.

It is also a fact that politicians from all shades of opinion survived and thrived on racism which turned the country into a killing field. One should not forget that this same group made, according to many reports, fortunes during the 30 year ethnic war which they were responsible for. Now that the war is over this group is without business and, perhaps, may be trying to precipitate another crisis to thrive on othersƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ misery.

These websites also started writing articles hailing Zionist Jews.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Israel, sworn enemy of Islam and Muslims worldwide, which described Sri Lankans as ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Monkey Looking PeopleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and trained both the LTTE cadres and the Sri Lankan government troops at the same time, has managed to sneak into Sri Lanka despite being expelled time and again. Do the politicians, journalists, businessmen and others who hob knob with Israelis know who these Israelis are, what their crime records have been and why peace loving people worldwide despise them?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Perhaps the racist elements among the Sinhala Buddhist community may not know that one of the main agendas of their new found friend, Israel, has been to use racist elements to unleash violence against Muslims. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

For example, citing Indian Interior Ministry report New Delhi based fortnightly ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Milli GazetteƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ of 1-15 December 2009, disclosed that Hindu extremist organizationsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ get lots of money from Israel via Europe to incite communal riots against Muslims. The report added that ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-in 2008 alone RS 7877 crores were given to Hindu extremist organizations which they used for subversive activities in the form of riots, bomb blasts and creating circumstances detrimental to Muslims. The report added that ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-investigation gives credence to the belief that Hindu terrorists are poisoning the socio-political atmosphere in India and Israel is helping them through financial helpƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

Now the question we must ask ourselves is, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”what is the guarantee that the Israelis would not do the same thing here in Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢? DonƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t be surprised if we find there are mercenaries operating in Sri Lanka. Can the island afford to take this risk especially at a time when all communities are looking forward to a peacefulƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ future?

Already Israelis have started spreading their tentacles here winning politicians, local media, businessmen and others by dining and wining, sponsoring free trips to Israel, excursions and numerous other such incentives. Judging by the numerous distorted articlesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  that appear in the print media it looks like they have penetrated certain section of the local media. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Most journalists may be ignorant of the blood soaked history of Israel, its never ending atrocities and the sufferings of Palestinians at the hands of the Zionist government. They then become easy prey to Israeli manipulations.

The Muslim world, especially those in the Middle East, look to Sri Lanka with warmth and friendship .In response to Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s steadfast support to Palestinians some of these countries provided economic assistance and came to our rescue during difficult times including the recent war against LTTE. Of course with no strings attached. Almost a million Sri Lankans work in the Gulf States, remitting billions and cementing the islandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s friendly ties. Which begs the question ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-is there any need to jeopardize this longstanding friendship and goodwillƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚?

In the midst came, during the Holy Month of Ramadha, the mysterious but despicable and disgusting Greece Devils ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ scratching and squeezing Muslim women andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  driving terror into the Muslim community as a whole.

Then there was a report in the Sri Lanka Mirror of 13 September 2011 that a mosque in Anurdhapura, supposed to be near King DutugemunuƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s remains, being torn down under the watchfulƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  eyes of the police.

Under the circumstance Muslims, living scattered all over the island and who suffered a great deal during the ethnic war as they refused to support Tamil separatist war, can only turn to the government and responsible elements in the Sinhalese community to ban such hate campaigns so that a potential disaster can be avoided.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

  1. Lorenzo Says:

It is a world wide thing inflicted upon the Muslim community by itself.

But in SL there is nothing against Muslims and Muslims have been reasonable (except a few) and there is no problem.

  2. mjaya Says:

You hypocrite! No wonder you are so enraged by the campaign to ban cattle slaughter.

Who was behind the Beruwala mosque attack? Sinhalese “extremists”? Who is behind the numerous clandestine FM stations preaching hate against the Sinhalese? Like the case of the LTTE it all starts with fake stories of “discrimination”.

I have a simple way of proving your hypocrisy. Write an article on the unfair stone age “trial” of Rizana Nawfeek by the “legal” system of the barbaric kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I doubt you ever will, but FYI, plenty of Sinhalese people have done so.

  3. Rohan8 Says:

Everyone should work hard to get along now in Sri Lanka now that the LTTE is crushed. Everyone in Sri Lanka is Sri Lankan. Wether they Sinhalese or Muslim. Remember Muslims and Muslim countries have been very good friends of Sri Lanka over the years, unlike the west which supported the LTTE (and still supports them judging by the allegations from western countries) and wanted to divide Sri Lanka. Muslims and Sinhalese people are actually brothers in arms. Very much similar in their world view. They are both battling the same enemy. Which is western imperialism!

  4. mjaya Says:

    @Ahamed

Got you! Was Rizana Nawfeek given a fair trial? According to her version, the baby choked to death. Was that ever taken into account? Every noticed how many non-Muslims have protested against her unfair trial?

You too are angered by the ban on cattle slaughter and parrot the same words that any hypocrite on this issue would say “why not stopping the killing of goats, chickens and fish… etc.” just read http://www.lankaweb.com/news/items/2010/12/10/ban-on-cattle-slaughter/ ….

Vegetarianism is a great thing and IMHO the most civilized way of living. There are plenty of vegetarians in Sri Lanka who belong to ALL ethnic groups and religious faiths. One of the main campaigners against animal cruelty in Sri Lanka is Mrs. Samsudin, a Muslim and a great lady. The reason why the ban on cattle slaughter comes first is because it is of great STARTING POINT. The cow is a sacred animal to Hindus in Sri Lanka and sacred to Sinhalese Buddhists as well. Life is sacred and consuming meat is bad for your health. I would equally like to see people stopping the consumption of chicken laced with harmful antibiotics and hormones along with all other types of meat and I can responsibly say that most others who are against the ban on cattle slaughter are equally against the slaughter of ALL OTHER ANIMALS.

What I am simply trying to say is that there is nothing different between straw man arguments on “discrimination” given by the TNA and the writer of this article.

  5. Lorenzo Says:

Fully agree with mjaya. Well articulated thoughts.

    LF or Ahmed,

Within SL there is NOTHING against Muslims because Muslims don’t try to establish Islamic way of life in SL. This is a fact. If it changes, then there will be war with the support of the entire international community (Russia, USA, China, UK, France, India, Australia). But it is not the case and there is no need to create problems that aren’t there.

“Israel, sworn enemy of Islam and Muslims worldwide”

May be. But what does it matter to SL? Nothing. Let them battle it out. It doesn’t affect us at all. SL’s friendship with Israel is a different thing based on what matters to SL and Israel. Others’ concerns are UNIMPORTANT and IRRELEVANT.

Israel did train the LTTE along with SLA. It was wrong. But that was long ago which was more than compensated by Israeli help to SL during the war.

Building new places of religious worship MUST be regulated in SL. No approval should be given to build new places of worship as we have ENOUGH. Then all these problems will not arise.

  6. AnuD Says:

Two prominent religions from the middle east are political religions. They believe in forceful and fradulant conversion to their religion.

They don’t want to accept it.

  7. mjaya Says:

    @Lateef Farook

I confirmed this story from my cousins who are old girls of Sirimavo Bandaranayaka Vidyalaya.

The OGA has a strict dress code and ALL old girls are supposed to wear saree when coming to the school. Rules are rules and everyone must obey them. Nevertheless a lawyer should no better regarding this.

So just DON’T DISTORT FACTS to suit your hidden agenda which is no different from that of the TNA.

  8. AnuD Says:

Those who are crying out loud saying Sinhalas do that and this Should think, what has happened to Sinahala people because of their influence.

  9. Samson Says:

    Another crybaby?

If you can’t live in Sri Lanka as it is, get out. Go back to where you came from.
If you want to dress like Saudi Arabia, go to Saudi Arabia and wear them. In Sri Lanka dress like a Sri Lankan.

You cannot live in a country where the majority does not welcome you.
If only a minority is against you, then there is no problem.

  10. ranjith Says:

    mjaya,

In no religion unnecessary killing of animals is actually allowed or supported.

To clarify the position on meat eating to the monks, the Buddha said:

“Monks, I allow you fish and meat that are quite pure in three respects: if they are not seen, heard or suspected to have been killed on purpose for a monk. But, you should not knowingly make use of meat killed on purpose for you.”

There are many places in the Buddhist scriptures which tell of the Buddha and his monks being offered meat and eating it.

However there are some meats which are specifically prohibited for monks to eat: human meat, for obvious reasons; meat from elephants and horses as these were then considered royal animals; dog meat – as this was considered by ordinary people to be disgusting; and meat from snakes, lions, tigers, panthers, bears and hyenas – because one who had just eaten the flesh of such dangerous jungle animals was thought to give forth such a smell as to draw forth revenge from the same species!

Towards the end of the Buddha’s life, his cousin Devadatta attempted to usurp the leadership of the Order of monks. In order to win support from other monks, Devadatta tried to be more strict than the Buddha and show Him up as indulgent. Devadatta proposed to the Buddha that all the monks should henceforth be vegetarians. The Buddha refused and repeated once again the regulation that he had established years before, that monks and nuns may eat fish or meat as long as it is not from an animal whose meat is specifically forbidden, and as long as they had no reason to believe that the animal was slaughtered specifically for them.

“Fish or meat, even if of an allowable kind, is unallowable if raw. Thus bhikkhus may not eat steak tartare, sashimi, oysters on the half-shell, etc. (Raw flesh and blood are allowed at Mahavagga.VI.10.2 only when one is possessed by non-human beings (!)) Furthermore, even cooked fish or meat of an allowable kind is unallowable if the bhikkhu sees, hears, or suspects that the animal was killed specifically for the purpose of feeding bhikkhus (Mahavagga.VI.31.14).”

There is historical evidence to suggest that meat eating was not shunned by the Buddha himself and if certain interpretations are to be believe, he died because of eating improperly cooked pork offered by one of his lay followers.

Meat eating is not prohibited in Vajrayana Buddhism too.

    lorenzo,

///Within SL there is NOTHING against Muslims because Muslims don’t try to establish Islamic way of life in SL.///

Let us praise Muslims that they practice Islamic way of life in SL.

Let us praise Hindus that they practice Hindu way of life in SL.

Let us praise Christians that they practice Christian way of life in SL.

What way of life, we, Buddhists live in our motherland?

    Isn’t it so pathetic?

///Building new places of religious worship MUST be regulated in SL. No approval should be given to build new places of worship as we have ENOUGH. Then all these problems will not arise.///

The author of this article laments about the destruction of the Shrine, and not the construction.

Even the layman knows to get approval from the government to construct a building for religious purposes.

When I support the Buddhist temples to be constructed in N & E, my Tamil friends agitate and call me as Buddhist racist.

  12. Fran Diaz Says:

Regarding meat eating in Buddhist Teachings, John Kahila has this to say :

“To understand this “middle path” approach to meat-eating, we have to remember that there were no “Buddhists” in Shakyamuni’s time. There were only mendicants of various kinds (including the Buddha’s disciples), plus lay people who gave them alms out of respect without necessarily worrying about the brand name of the teachings.

If meat was what a householder chose to offer, it was to be accepted without discrimination or aversion. To reject such an offering would be an offense against hospitality and would deprive the householder of an opportunity to gain merit — and it could not benefit the animal, because it was already dead. Even the Jains may have had a similar outlook during the same period of history, despite the strict doctrine of ahimsa.

Vegetarianism could not become a source of serious controversy in the bhikkhu sangha until the rise of fixed-abode monastic communities in which the monks did not practice daily alms-round. Any meat provided to such a community by lay people would almost certainly have been killed specifically for the monks. That may be one reason for the difference in Mahayana and Theravada views on meat eating — the development of monastic communities of this type occurred principally within Mahayana.

The issue of meat eating raises difficult ethical questions. Isn’t the meat in a supermarket or restaurant killed “for” us? Doesn’t meat eating entail killing by proxy?

Few of us are in a position to judge meat eaters or anyone else for “killing by proxy.” Being part of the world economy entails “killing by proxy” in every act of consumption. The electricity that runs our computers comes from facilities that harm the environment. Books of Buddhist scriptures are printed on paper produced by an industry that destroys wildlife habitat. Worms, insects, rodents and other animals are routinely killed en masse in the course of producing the staples of a vegetarian diet. Welcome to samsara. It is impossible for most of us to free ourselves from this web; we can only strive to be mindful of entanglement in it. One way to do so is to reflect on how the suffering and death of sentient beings contributes to our comfort. This may help us to be less inclined to consume out of mere greed”.

In think Mr Kahila gives a fair view of the subject. It is up to the individual to interpret the Teachings of the Buddha and also survive in modern times. I am personally of the view that a vegetarian diet which includes milk products and eggs are more suited to human beings. There are ample amino acid tablets and other supplements that can be added to a vegetarian diet to live quite well. Also, bear in mind that the largest and strongest animals in the world, the elephants and the whales are vegetarians, as are the Primates, with only occasional forages into non-veg diet.

All of that having been said, it cannot be denied that the economic machine which produces meat also creates fear and suffering for a large number of animals. It is useful to bear this in mind even if one consumes meat, to resist developing a habit of callousness. Many Buddhists (especially Mahayanists) practice vegetarianism as a means of cultivating compassion.

  13. Fran Diaz Says:

P.S.: Last para above is Mr Kahila’s.

  14. Rohan8 Says:

@Lorenzo is this the same international community that you say will help Sri Lanka. That totally decimated Libya and brought death and horror to that land? Sri Lanka should learn to rely on itself. I think thats what Gadaffi and Libya tried to do. Look what happened to him? and Libya which is now a western puppet state. When before it was a secular independent sovereign Islamic state under Gadaffi. If sri lanka wants the west to help. Then might as well have continued to stay under Portuguese, Dutch and British Rule. Because that’s what it amounts to. Western Imperialism comes in many guises!

  15. mjaya Says:

    @Ahamed

The story that everyone in Sri Lanka knows about Rizana Nawfeek is that the baby choked while feeding. It is the story that was published in the media. The very fact that you got to great lengths to defend the Saudi’s shoddy legal system rather than speak up against Rizana Nawfeek shows that you are more un-Sri Lankan. There were plenty of Muslim people who spoke up for Rizana’s release and they held a protest rally in Kalmunai as well. Now THOSE MUSLIMS ARE TRUE SRI LANKANS!!

Don’t BS about the SBV school issue as well. The rule applies to the OGA. Are members of the OGA students?? :D
Also if she has no problem with the Islamic rule where women cannot enter a mosque why make such a fuss about the rule that you have to wear saree to your school? Its pure double standards !!!

Its true the cow isn’t sacred according to Buddhism but to the Sinhalese it is. Why do you think Anagarika Dhammapala used the slogen “Geri Mas Nokawu – Mathpan Nobow” (don’t eat beef, don’t drink alcohol)? Why do you think the cow was removed from the Sandakada Pahana during the Polonnaruwa period? During ancient times the cow was the livelihood of most Sinhalese people who were farmers. Not eating beef is therefore a SIGN OF GRATITUDE to the animal who helped the farmer’s livelihood. Eating beef was first introduced by the Portuguese and has been in our society ever since.

Anyone who really cares for animals will be happy that the killing of ANY ANIMAL will end be it a cow, elephant, chicken, halmessa or kunissa. Those who don’t and want it will use any silly argument to stop it!!! That is again duplicity and I can bet anything that should the government propose a ban on slaughtering pigs you will jump up and down in joy despite the fact that Christians in Sri Lanka enjoy pork a lot!! I would of course support it, along with a ban on killing ANY ANIMAL.

Just note that people who are against cruelty to animals have no double standards, to us all life is precious.

  16. ranjith Says:

    Franz Diaz,

Whales are not non-vegetarians as you mentioned.

The whale is the top predator in the ocean. It eats animals, which makes them a carnivore. The whale eats marine mammals and seabirds. They also eat a variety of fish such as salmon, cod, flatfish, hake, herring, and smelt. They also eat other kinds of whales. They also eat seals, sea lions, walruses, and occasionally sea otters and penguins. Lastly, they even eat squid, octopus and smaller sea creatures.

Why do you quote John Kahila’s remarks about meat eating in Buddhism.

Buddha too accepted and consumed meats. This is an open secret.

Buddha told what type of animal meat is edible and what is not.

We, Buddhists should practice what Buddha says, and not someone sayings.

  17. ranjith Says:

    mjaya,

//Just note that people who are against cruelty to animals have no double standards, to us all life is precious.///

That means, you are coming to say that the Buddha is a man with double standard. It’s ridiculous.

Buddha and his disciples consumed meat. Everyone knows about that. Killing animals for consumption is not cruel.

The methods of killings are vary. That is an another topic.

If killing animals is cruel, Buddha would have omitted to consume meat. But he consumed.

Buddha is a founder of Buddhism and he knows without killing animals, meat cannot be consumed.

If the Buddha is alive today, he would have permitted to kill animals for consumption without any doubt.

  18. Lorenzo Says:

    Ahmed,

I’m no fan of Israel. But SL has received more good than bad from Israel and we don’t CARE what they do to Islamics! Let them kill, screw, grab, etc. Islamics. It does NOT matter. We should think now SL can benefit (which we already have) from Israel.

The west has SUCCEEDED in it. Do you think they lost the war in Iraq? No. Who dies most; coalition troops or Islamic extremists? Same with Afghanistan. They gave weapons to these fools to fight SU and SU killed 2 million of them. Now they are doing the same. New UAV attack technology was EXPERIMENTED ON these Islamic militants. That is the LATEST weapon in the world and highly effective. Most countries now want it!

IF Islamic extremists like you create trouble in SL in ANYWAY, you WILL face the same punishment.

  19. Lorenzo Says:

    Rohan8,

Yes SL should learn from it. But we cannot isolate ourselves. We have to be in MULTIPLE teams as needed.

But there are no permanant friends or enemies in the international community. SL is facing a twin threat (AS YOU CAN SEE EVEN FROM THIS FORUM!!!) – Dalit threat now coupled with some western powers and Islamic threat.

We have to fight BOTH. One group is our friend when we fight the other. We MUST get their help to fight the other. This is how all the countries do thing. No permanant friends or enemies.

West helped us fight LTTE. They sold us weapons (including USA. e.g. C-130, Bell-212, jetboats, SLNS warships that busted the LTTE, Mk84 bombs, M16s), trained our military (SF, commandoes, Sandhurts, Westpoint academies), gave us intelligence to hunt Tigers, banned LTTE front organisations, arrested HUNDREDS of tigers abroad, foiled LTTE attempts to get SA18 missiles, etc., etc.

When we get such help we SHOULD get it as we did. By definition west (and even others) are hypocrites. We should get the good and scrap the crap. West and India are enemies when it comes to war chimes BS but they are our BEST friends when it comes to screwing Islamic terrorists who are active in SL (e.g. Ahmed, the terrorists who tried to build an Arabic Islamic thing in an archaeological site).

On other matters we should team up with those who are beneficial for that.

This is how EVERY COUNTRY works today even SL. Extremist views won’t work. Only flexible ways work.

  20. Lorenzo Says:

    Ahmed,

What a foolish argument? Typical. Look around the world. You loserpigs are scr*d around the world in millions because of your attitude. Await the same punishment!!

Be warned. CIA is following your Islamic terrorist comments and your IP. WordPress is hosted in USA and Lankaweb in UK. SL too shares this information with them via interpol. :))

  21. ranjith Says:

    Ahmed,

    You are a real loser.

Lorenzo is a lost Tamil terror remnant of thuggery under disguise of Sri Lankan patriot.

    Ahmed, be calm.

Street dogs can bark louder, but seldom bite.

  22. geoff Says:

Latheef Farook = Ahmed = “Ranjith” = Al Qaeda

    Fullstop.

  23. Muhammad FS Says:

I’m totally disgusted of the conduct of some Muslims (or those who pretend to be Muslims) here. Totally disgusting!

This is a LTTE plan to set Muslims against Sinhalese and benefit. They did it in 1990 but didn’t work.

We have always been a peaceful community and totally accept the majoritarian politics of this country. It should not change now. Never. Peace be upon all Sri Lankans.

  24. mjaya Says:

    @ranjith (or whoever again……)

“Killing animals for consumption is not cruel.” If that is so why don’t animals ever voluntarily give up their life for meat?? No animal lets itself to be killed without a fight, regardless of the way it is killed. Lions and tigers kill for their own survival because they can’t eat anything else. However, humans have the option of not eating meat.

The first principle of Buddhism is not to harm or take a life of another living being. In the Noble Eightfold the Buddha lists selling meat and animals for meat as an unsuitable occupation along with selling intoxicants, weapons, poison. To achieve enliightment one mast have a noble livelihood (“Samma Aajiva”). In the Dhammapada the Buddha says one must take oneself as an example and not kill and not harm. Buddhism does not explicitly forbid the consumption of meat, but neither does in encourage the consumption of meat.

A Bikkhu need not be a strict vegetarian according to the Vinaya but must not accept meat from an animal killed on their behalf. Since Bikkhus depend on alms, it is a matter of being practical.

    @Ahamed

A load of BS again who are you trying to con? Its a known fact that there is a rule that women cannot enter a mosque (even if they do they have to go to separate female areas). If this lawyer has no problem of this rule why make such a fuss about the rule of the OGA?

“I am not defending any foreign government, my point is our influence over them is minimum and talking without the facts ( not a single media release the post motum report isn’t? ) is a suicide mission. During that period I also wrote to some saudi official with the evidence of her condition in sri lanka (house was not even complete). Before we write something we must need to do our home work.”
Typical of someone who is just trying to pretend to do something just for name sake. Why do you think so many government officials from SL make such an effort to stop her execution and free her? Its because she didn’t receive a fair trial. The reason why you are beating around the bush is simple, your loyalty is to Saudi Arabia…… (or you get some benefit in the form of Saudi Petrodollars which you don’t want to loose)

  25. mjaya Says:

    @Muhammad FS

    Well said!

Anybody loyal to the Sri Lankan flag is a son or daughter of our nation. You can have any ethnicity, religion or *benign* way of life. If you get hurt when a fellow Sri Lankan is hurt be it Rizana Nawfeek or L. T. Ariyawathi, then you are a Sri Lankan. If you are not happy with the way we live or disturb the harmony by BS calls of “discrimination”, then find some other place to live.

  26. ranjith Says:

    mjaya,

///The first principle of Buddhism is not to harm or take a life of another living being.///
///Buddhism does not explicitly forbid the consumption of meat, but neither does in encourage the consumption of meat.///

Not only Buddhism, all the other religions’ dogmas are the same as above.

///A Bikkhu need not be a strict vegetarian according to the Vinaya but must not accept meat from an animal killed on their behalf.///

Need not to be a strict vegetarian means, a Bhikku can consume meat. Am I right?

In abattoir, no one slaughter animals specially for Bhikkus or a particular group.

Slaughtering animals to humans for food consumption only.

In that sense, Bhikkus too can consume meat.

So, Buddhists are allowed to eat meat, according to Buddha’s teaching.

  27. Leela Says:

Ahmed talks here as if he is filled with egalitarian qualities. He demands his rights as a Muslim than a human being or a Sri Lankan.

I wouldn’t blame Ahmed for his logic for concept of the Golden Rule and fairness is absent in the psyche of Muslims. Muslims demand all privileges in non-Muslim countries, while they deny the basic human rights to non-Muslims in countries where they are the majority. They sincerely believe this is how things should be and that is why Ahmed puts off Saudi acts as irrelevant to us.

A Muslim follows two things, one is the Quran and the other is the Sunnah. The Quran is the words of Muhammad (he claimed what he read out was Allah’s or God’s word) and the Sunnah are the life examples of Muhammad. For Muslims, Muhammad is the one who defined what is good and bad and the one that set the standards. The details of the Sunnah are described in the books called ‘hadith’ that are written as reported by Muhammad’s companions and wives. The Mullahs that study volumes and volumes of these ‘hadiths’ master the details of Muhammad’s life work for years and advise the believers the correct way of doing things if it is not in the Koran. They cover laws covering their interactions with non-Muslims, sexuality, food, rituals, leisure activities, dress, hygiene etc.

No wonder Islam has become a moral relativistic doctrine. Rape is bad but rape of the disbelievers is good. Murder is bad but Murder of kafirs is divine. Child molestation is bad but if Muhammad lusts after a 9-year-old child that is good. If a non-Muslim kills a Muslim he should be put to death but no Muslim should be killed for killing a non-Muslim. A married man may lust after other woman and marry four wives but this rule does not apply to women.

We know that in no Islamic country Muslims are allowed to leave their religion and become Murtad. We also know that the penalty of apostasy in Islam is death and if someone is caught preaching his religion to a Muslim he could be put to death. Just ask how many Baha’is or Qadianis have been executed because they left Islam to embrace these religions. Just ask how many people in Pakistan were killed for converting to Christianity. Just ask how many Sunnis and Shiites were murdered because the followers of each group call the members of other group heretics.

The more we learn about Islam and its trait it is better for Sinhala Buddhists.

    Leela,

Your comprehension about Islamophobia shines well. Congratulations!

What you have quoted are absolutely nonsensical about Islam.

I welcome your statement of last paragraph that Sinhala Buddhists should learn Islam.

Being a Buddhist, I am exploring now Islam day by day.

I hope you will encourage the Sinhala Buddhists to study Islam through authentic sources.

  29. mjaya Says:

Oh “Ranjit” I was true that you don’t think straight as I said “Buddhism does not explicitly forbid the consumption of meat, but neither does in encourage the consumption of meat.” you are reasoning without even reading properly.

Not only Buddhism, all the other religions’ dogmas are the same as above.
Not ALL OTHER RELIGIONS what about the sacrificial feast for Abraham?? (I need not say anything more)

“What you have quoted are absolutely nonsensical about Islam.”
“Being a Buddhist, I am exploring now Islam day by day.
I hope you will encourage the Sinhala Buddhists to study Islam through authentic sources.”
Now this speaks volumes!!!! Only a certain type of person would use the word “authentic sources”. So its obviously the other way around.

Unless you are Ranjit Singh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_your_language), there is no other way your name is “Ranjit” you are using an assumed name.

  30. Leela Says:

    ranjith:
‘Nonsensical’, is it? Test me if you can. To tell you the truth, I do not suffer from any phobia let alone Islamophobia. What I wrote here are my observations of Muslims in general and Ahmad’s comments in particular.

I am not an authority of Islam. But I have been an avid reader about contemporary religions for the last so many years. On and off, I have read enough about the God of Abraham and all his prophets. Hence, I have mentioned in the third paragraph of my comment where one could find Allah’s word and interpretation of it when no answer is found in that.

I am sad you hadn’t figured out my last sentence in a correct perspective. Also, from what you write, I have noticed your inclination to interpret Buddha Dhamma not just in a different prospective to most of us but in the most illogical manner as well.

  31. mjaya Says:

    Hi Leela,

Just don’t waste your valuable time on the person hiding behind the phony name “Ranjit”. He is a prime example of how religious fundamentalism can muddle up the human mind. He tries so hard to masquerade as a Buddhist but fails miserably.

  32. Fran Diaz Says:

    ranjith: You say

    (1) Why do you quote John Kahila’s remarks about meat eating in Buddhism.

    (2) Buddha too accepted and consumed meats. This is an open secret.

    (3) Buddha told what type of animal meat is edible and what is not.

    (4) We, Buddhists should practice what Buddha says, and not someone sayings.

    (1) I am quoting John Kahila because he makes sense to me.
    (2) There is no record of the Buddha consuming meat. The ‘sukaramadhava’ he is supposed to have consumed some time prior to passing away, is really some type of MUSHROOM that grows in India, and NOT PORK as some people like to interpret.
    (3) John Kahila interprets the meat eating aspect of the Buddhist Teachings very well. As to what the Buddha might have actually said about the matter remains debatable. The Teachings were actually written quite some time after the Buddha passed away.
    (4) Buddhists will interpret the Buddha Teachings according to times they face and also their needs. The Buddha said ‘ehipachiko’ or ‘come and see’. There are no hard and fast rules, only a general approach to Life through Compassion. We must eat according to our health & bodily demands and to satisfy our hunger. That is the wise way.

Regarding whales, I was thinking of the Blue Whale which is the largest creature in the seas, as is the elephant on land. Blue Whales eat mostly Krill which is a sort of tiny, near microscopic organism, not larger creatures as you state.

  33. ranjith Says:

    Hello Leela,

Yes of course! Your comment really seems to be nonsensical.

I wonder you, as a avid reader about contemporary religions for the last so many years, you couldn’t get any answer for the gossip you posed.

To find answers for your gossip, there are ample Islamic webs around the world in any language you want.

If you wish to read Islamophobia literature, you never get any understanding till death.

I can’t grind the flour again which is already ground in many websites. Please refer and correct yourself.

After all, please correct me about my illogical posture of Dhammapada to the Lankaweb forum.

  34. ranjith Says:

    mjaya,

///Not ALL OTHER RELIGIONS what about the sacrificial feast for Abraham?? (I need not say anything more)///

All the religions say for unnecessary killings should not be.

Please listen, sacrificial feast is not meant for Abraham. Sacrificing animals used by end-users i.e. needy, poor people, etc.

Same as in Munnesewaram. Meat used by poor masses.

Buddha too consumed meat from slaughtered animals.

The Buddha refused and repeated once again the regulation that he had established years before, that monks and nuns may eat fish or meat as long as it is not from an animal whose meat is specifically forbidden, and as long as they had no reason to believe that the animal was slaughtered specifically for them.

    Buddha admitted meat eating.

We should follow the footsteps of Buddha.

  35. mjaya Says:

    @Ahmed

Look buddy I have nothing against your religious practices or your beliefs. What I meant was that if that lawyer had no problem with a rule of segregation then why make such a fuss about the rule at the OGA.

As about what you are trying to imply in the youth camp, things like that happen in all societies. Don’t rapes happen in the Middle East? The only difference is that when you have a legals system that requires a rape victim to have four witnesses or else if the VICTIM is whipped (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1569674/200-lashes-for-Saudi-gang-rape-victim.html), a rape is more likely to go unreported.

Now this is the kind of legal system Rizana has to face! And BTW if a Sri Lankan is unfairly accused in ANY COUNTRY be it Argentina or Tanzania, a Sri Lankan must stand up for it.

Finally, Ahamed, does the type of incident that happened in Anuradhapura happen anywhere else? Aren’t there pleny of mosques in Sri Lanka that have been near Buddhist temples for generations?? You should look at the background of such incidents. As long as there is harmony and no fundamentalism there is no problem. If you don’t get it you are a fundamentalist yourself.

  36. Leela Says:

Ahamed is twisting facts by highlighting the removal of an illegal structure in Anuradhapura. What more proof for toleration of other religions by Buddhists than the mosque right next to the temple of tooth in Kandy.

As for Muslims, leave out the non God believing Buddhists, Muhammad had castigated the original one God believers, Jews and Christians as non-believers and banned them from getting near the Muslim holy place Kaaba in Makah, Saudi.

Muhammad had decreed (Koran Surat Al-Tauba 9:28); “O you who believe [Muslims] the Mushrikun [polytheists and unbelievers in Allah and the Message of Muhammad] are Najasum [impure, defiled]. So let them not come near Al-Masjd Al Haram [the Kaaba in Mecca] after this year”. So much for Muslim equality. He didn’t stop at that. He preached spitted more hate as God said. Read the following bit:
8:12 We will cast terror into the hearts of Non-Muslims. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.
3:28 Let not the Muslims take for friends or helpers the Non-Muslims.
8:65 Rouse the Muslims to the fight against Non-Muslims.
9:5 Then fight and slay the Non-Muslims wherever ye find them,
9:14 Fight the Non-Muslims, and God will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame.
9:23 O ye the Muslims take not for protectors your fathers and your brothers if they do not love Islam.
9:28 O ye Muslims! Truly the Non-Muslims are unclean.
9:123 O ye Muslims! fight the Non-Muslims who gird you about, and let them find firmness in you.
47:4 Therefore, when ye meet the Non-Muslims, smite at their necks; At length.

Ranjith, never mind what kind of a Buddhist you are but you should have explored them, if you are in to Islam.

  37. rohana Says:

Mr. Farrok, You may be genuinely innocent of not knowing what Sri Lankan Muslims doing to the Sinhala people. I can give you many many examples and proofs. I have collected so much evidence of what Muslims (some) have done to create a situation to be suspicious. For example please go to Babile Road in Gampola. They have built a mosque against the government regulations on Paddy fields and worse the mosque is built across the public road where even buddhist monks have to walk under the feet of people in the mosque. No one is allowed to built anything over a public road maintained and paid by the government. Go to Akurana and see what they have done to Akurana, a Sinhala town (I grew up next to it) and now you can’t even see a single board in Sinhala. Agianst the law of the country four mosques in Gampola starts screaming everyday from 0500hrs disturbing the elderly, sick and the babies of the whole town. Do you think these and other things helps to keep the peace? But then they are the first to scream being discriminated and never say what started it. As a Muslim what have you done to stop these discriminitive actions by some Muslims which will hurt all the Muslims?

  38. Leela Says:

Ahmed: I’ve heard of this ‘cut and paste’ accusation before. In fact, I was expecting for you to say that I am quoting the Koran out of context. For one thing, cut and paste or not, what I had quoted were Koran verses. However, I agree that Koran says elsewhere that, “Let there be no compulsion in religion ….” But, that kind of contradictory writing is typical in books where One God’s readings are written. Whether one agrees with my suggestion or not, I am sure, what I had quoted may well have led Jews and Christians to fight Muslims through their history.

I’ve read enough Muslim history. Muslims are told that Muhammad did only good and nothing bad. So much so, they call the life of Muhammad, Hadith and refer to it for life guidance when not in Koran. However we read that in his first fight against the infidels in Badar, Muhammad himself had destroyed all the idols that were worshipped by people of Mecca. Is that a good moral to follow? We don’t think so.

As for Hadith, vandalizing idols is a good thing. That is why Taliban let the whole world know that retaining Buddhist idols in an Islamic country is against the teachings of the holy Koran before they dynamited Barmian Buddha statues in Afghanistan which was listed as a world heritage by the United Nation. For Muslims Hadith would over ride all UN declarations. So, all true Muslims furtively accept that Taliban did the right thing. However much, such Islamic values are repulsive to others; Muslims think they are the best.

In spite of different names the God is called, Jews, Christians and Muslims believe there is only one God and pray only for him. They say the God is benign. If the God is one and all his prophets claim that their creator God stands firm for peace, leave out his unbelieving creations like us aside; the God should have created his adherents a harmonious lot. But we see they fight each other viciously.

The point is; if the God had forgotten to make his adherents to be nonviolent at the point of his creation, he should have at least forced them not to fight later. But hadn’t done that either. Why?

Muslim Koran debases the other two as unclean and they alone are God’s true children. Jews say; they are the God’s chosen people and look down on others. And Christians say; they alone will go to paradise to be with God and assure a place in an ever burning hell for all others. Funny thing is; every one of them degrades others while worshipping the same God.

It is amazing how the God had stimulated Muslims with lewd pleasure and dirty promises to kill the Jews and Christians when ever come across them. Had God gone berserk? I’ll write about that later.

    My Gosh
If people who are educated behave like this how in the world common people in Srilanka will behave
I am very very very sad and uncomfortable to think how any one in the right mind talk or write against other faith
It is beyond imagination . I am very disappointed that even we are discussing on others faith
    very very sad

I strongly believe we need to create councelling , Psychiatric clinics all over the country
free of charge atleast for 6-7 years
love , respect other race and faith should be taught in the councelling to every one from 5 years old to 100 years old
Unless it is taught I doubt very much there will be everlasting peace

    thank you
