Hela Veda, Sri Lanka’s indigenous medicine is a national heritage that has been passed down through the generations by our forefathers considered to be from the time of Ravan the great king of Lanka in the time of Indian great epic Ramayana. A Sri Lankan entrepreneur Nature’s Beauty Creations has created a series of herbal teas that intertwine our historical past with the wonders of Hela Veda using natural herbal ingredients indigenous to Sri Lanka.
Before tea was introduced during the colonial regimes, royal families and elite society in ancient Sri Lanka consumed various herbal wellness drinks for health, healing and longevity based on the knowledge of Hela Veda. Rajayu products by Nature’s Beauty Creations are a range of such natural wellness drinks that recreated from our historical past recommended by our fore fathers of Hela Veda.

When I was a child living in Sri Lanka my mother wanted to be treated by an Ayurvedic Doctor even though my father was a Western trained Physician and my mother a western trained nurse. We traveled to an Ayurvedic center in the rural part of Sri Lanka. The Buildings were modern and the area was cultivated with Ayurvedic plants. While we were waiting I happened to enter a building which housed a theater. The place was filled with Ayurvedic students and they were watching a movie of a cow giving birth. That was my first impression of the birthing process. The crux of the story was in addition to what ailed my mother I happened to cut my hand. I distinctly remember the Ayurvedic doctor take some kind of seed and squeeze the sticky juice on the wound. It acted better than a band aid or a sticking plaster, for once the wound was healed and the adhesive serum from that seed was removed my hand showed no scar.

While in SL about two weeks ago I was watching a program on “our heritage” presented on Dearana TV. It was about Sigiriya. According to H.C.P. Bell, the Englishman who rediscovered this place from the jungle it has evolved in two different periods of our history. It seems from the five hundred odd paintings (mentioned in the kurutu gee) of the damsels only 19 are remaining. You get fair skinned ones as well as dark ones in addition some with mongolian features. Their eye lids painted. Where did they get such paint in 4th century (by King Kasyapa) to get them painted?.
According to the narrator who was speaking in Sinhala, they have discovered an ancient burial ground in a near by area where they found make up kits for eye lids, lashes and perfume vials with other paraphernalia buried with the dead. They have been carbon dated to be about 5000 years old. This I suppose is Rama Ravana period. So was Ravana a real person who lived in a civilised society in SL.

Bandaranayake’s Indian Ayurvedic doctors almost destroyed the Sinhala Wattoru Weddu; the Podi Wedas and Maha Wedas. Indian stuff was mostly pre-prepared while Sinhala Wedas used fresh ingriedients mostly. Finding ingriedients for the Beheth Wattoruwa was an affair left to the, family memebers, relatives ,friends and the villagers at large. Even under the British Rule and Indian hedgemony Sinhala Wedas survived. But unfortunately after SWRD who appointed Indian trained Indian Ayurvedics as government servants and provided Indian stuff the Sihala Wedas and the knowledge dissapeared.
