Shipment of Clothing sent to the Ministry of Social Services in Colombo

By Suranimala JSBC Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver for Lankaweb

Thanks to a great effort by Sri Lanka Sinhala Association based in Montreal, Canada, a large shipment of new and nearly new clothing has been sent to the Ministry of Social Services in Colombo,Sri Lanka to be distributed to the recent cyclone and flood victims in the Polonnaruwa and Hingurakgoda districts. This shipment is expected to arrive in Colombo by the end of February 2001 and the Social Services Ministry has very kindly undertaken to co-ordinate its distribution. The shipping and forwarding was done by Mr. Nirantha Fernando of Trico International (Canada) to whom the Association extends its gratitude and sincere thanks. It is a cause for great respect and pride that the community in Montreal has come forward to make this happen and also the Venerable Walasmulle Sirisumana Thero of the Ottawa Buddhist Temple who contributed towards this effort with the necessary publicity, courtesy an encouragement. This is a commendable pioneering effort by the community in Montreal and together with other similar efforts made by Sri Lankans Overseas it is hoped that they will continue in all areas of need such as those of the Sons and Daughters of the Armed Forces and their families who continue to sacrifice their lives, dedication and undivided attention towards keeping our Great Nation Sovereign and Free. The initial response for this effort while being commendable is expected to be much greater the next time around as many have pledged their support towards its continuity and success.
