SLFP SAYS RANIL WICKREMESINGHE’S GOVERNMENT WOULD BE TOPPLED WITHIN ONE MONTH WITH THE HELP OF OTHER PARTIES

By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

Maithripala Sirisena, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) addressing a propaganda meeting said his party with the most other opposition groups and the help of other nationalist forces would topple the government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe within the next one-month.

Sirisena’s warning to the UNF government that is dependent on a paper thin majority of minority parties of the Muslims and the Tamils came in the midst of the opposition preparations to submit a no-confidence motion being prepared by them against the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe opposing his United Nation’s speech in New York endorsing the invasion of Iraq by US led military forces.

Addressing a SLFP propaganda meeting presided over by the Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa at Kaduruwela, Polonnaruwa, Sirisena said with the support of the workers , farmers, the Buddhist monks, and the intellectuals of the nation the government of Ranil Wickremesinghe would be definitely toppled.

At the meeting, which the reporters said was attended by more than 10,000 supporters of the main opposition party, the SLFP General Secretary said the UNF government’s absolutely bankrupt economic policies have made the Polonnaruwa farmer extremely desolate since they were unable to sell their rice for a reasonable price. He reminded the people that the government had made the situation more serious by cutting the Samurdhi grants, and other benefits while mortgaging the country to the terrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) the second largest opposition party in parliament had pledged their support to the toppling of the UNF government although their earlier attempts to form an electoral alliance with the SLFP had failed.

Meanwhile the Chief Government Whip Mahinda Samarasinghe said the Opposition was unable to submit the draft of the No Confidence motion against the Prime Minister at the last party leaders meeting at the parliament as threatened.

But the spokesman for the People’s Alliance Dr. Sarath Amunugama in a separate statement said the no confidence motion against the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was being prepared right now and would be submitted to the party leaders meeting at the parliament very soon.

The Opposition no confidence motion was being prepared against the Prime Minister’s speech made at the 58th UN General Assembly meeting held in New York declaring the support of the Sri Lanka government for the invasion of Iraq by the US led military forces going against the United Nations plan, completely reversing the non-aligned policy of Sri Lanka maintained by the two main party governments of the country, including the United National Party since the 1950’s.

Ranil Wickremesinghe also endorsed the role of the United States as a World Policeman as the United Nation’s organization had failed. Critics said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had, in fact endorsed an imperialistic role for the US in the modern world.
