Sinhala Nation or Sinhala People?

By Sandemali JAYAWARDENA, A globe-trotter.

Isn't it the time that we stopped parroting the worn out colonial vocabulary. Haven't we, the second generation after independence, gained any maturity? There is no Sinhala Nation but Sinhala people(janathava). But there should be a Sri Lanka Nation composed of Sinhala people and Tamil people and more. Generally, while the boudary of a Nation remains fixed that of a people is open to osmosis. In India there is no Begali Nation, no Pujabi nation, no Tamil nation,... but the one Great Indian nation. That is the secret of India's success, inspite of many attemts to divide it into warring "nations".

Moreover, there is no ethinic conflict in Sri Lanka but a linguistic communication failure.
