IGP Chandra Fernando: You are Pathetically Confused of Priorities!

Nissanka

Yesterday I read the following news item (shown in excerpt) in a SL Daily:

Newly appointed Inspector General Chandra Fernando yesterday vowed to uplift the image of the police department and create a better relationship between his service personnel and the public. "Our attention is mainly focused on several issues including the improvement of traffic management, combating drug trafficking and controlling underworld affairs. We will also look into the growing problem of promotions within the service," he said.

Mr. IGP, how about adding something like " We will take vigorous and sustained action against assassinations, especially political assassinations in the country to preserve peace, harmony and democratic values of our society."

Of course, had you uttered something like this, we all would have known that you are referring to the LTTE's killings of opponents, including Army informers (which will have dire consequences for us if war breaks out again - this is not rocket science to anyone except to our inept security establishment!).

The number of killings that have occurred since Ranil, the grand idiot of modern SL, signed the "peace" agreement with the LTTE is now over 500 and not a single culprit has been prosecuted and jailed. The LTTE's "pistol gangs" are freely roaming all over SL bumping off opponents and your so called national police force is pathetically impotent in capturing any! There have been one - or two - well publicized arrests, but these have been on account of LTTE's blunders (rare we must admit) and not because of any brilliant police work on the part of SL police! Leave alone brilliant detective work leading to apprehending of culprits, your force has shown that it is totally inept at even protecting LTTE opponents in police custody!

What a DAMN SHAME this is! Is there any other police force, anywhere, with a more abysmal record I wonder! What a colossal waste of tax-payers' money in running an inept police force such as this!

Therefore, Mr. IGP, instead of giving us the same pompous hoola & dance show that amounts to nothing (that we have come to expect from our politicians), how about you for a change taking some decisive steps to make a real change in a critical issue that is more menacing to the country than traffic management, drug trafficking, police promotion complaints, etc?

Your duty is to "serve & protect" and we see neither!
