RESUME PEACE TALKS WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY

Media Release

Friends for Peace in Sri Lanka commends the efforts being made by the Government of Sri Lanka, led by President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the opposition led by Ranil Wickremasinghe, to work together in the interest of peace. We support the dialogue between the major parties as well as the attempts to forge a consensus among them in an effort to resume negotiations between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

We are concerned that recent acts of violence as well as the absence of negotiations between the two parties has endangered the ceasefire and undermined the peace process. A speedy return to Norwegian-facilitated negotiations is vital in order to consolidate the gains already made in the peace process as well as to arrive at a just settlement to the conflict in Sri Lanka.

Friend for Peace in Sri Lanka calls upon all political parties, particularly those that are unwilling to support the current Norwegian-facilitated peace process, to abandon such opposition and instead support the current moves by the President and the Leader of the Opposition to advance the peace process. We call upon the international community to assist the efforts being made in Sri Lanka to promote negotiations. And we call upon the people of Sri Lanka to express their support for a permanent end to conflict and a negotiated settlement.
