INDIAS FORMER SPY BOSS SAYS NEGATION OF VITAL INFORMATION OF LTTE LED TO RAJIV KILLING BY THEMBy Walter JayawardhanaIn a newly published book one of Indias retired spy bosses B.A.
Raman has revealed that the negligence of vital information by certain
responsible people about the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)
had led to the assassination of Indias former Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi. In his new book Raman has revealed that the information passed by a
German spy about a LTTE operative who was a bomb expert frequenting
Tamil Nadu has been negated by the Intelligence Bureau led to the security
break down of the former Prime Minister who was assassinated by a Tamil
Tiger suicide bomber at Siriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Raman has said that the IB had negated the vital German warning by
saying that its own findings had revealed that the alleged person frequenting
Tamil Nadu had scant knowledge on bomb making. Raman was an additional
Secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing, Indias equivalent
of the CIA. Commenting on Ramans assessment of the situation , Indias
largest selling newspaper the Times of India said, The account
is in agreement with the estimate in certain informed quarters that
IB's LTTE desk had then failed to react to cipher messages used by Tamil
Tigers. During the time of the Premiership of Indira Gandhi , Rajiv Gandhis
mother, under her directions Indias Research and Analysis Wing
(RAW) where Raman worked was also responsible of training funding and
arming of the LTTE , to spite Sri Lankas then president Junius
Jayewardene, who was thought to be pro-US during that period of cold
war international politics. But when Sri Lanka went into a turmoil US
refused to help directly not to antagonize India. Under the regime of Rajiv Gandhi , the former policy was completely
reversed , and an Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) was sent to Sri
Lanka to disarm the LTTE , that antagonized the LTTE against Rajiv Gandhi. Raman, an intelligence insider of the Prime Ministers office in his
new book , Kaoboys of R&AW - Down the memory lane, has
exposed intelligence failure that led to the assassination of the former
Prime Minister which the Times of India said would sure to kick
up a controversy as some senior officials then handling IB affairs also
hold key security assignments in the present dispensation. |
