Please Canada let us not do it to Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It is not right. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ When we decided to build the Bank of CanadaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Currency Museum in the late 1970s, we decided to preserve the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-historic Bank of Canada buildingƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ on OttawaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Wellington Street which was built in 1937, and our architects were innovative to design the Museum around this historic building without demolishing it. And yet, Canada has decided to demolish completely our embassy building in Colombo which is the historic building, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Oliver CastleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ on GregoryƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Road, Colombo 7, built in the late 1800s andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  build a new Canadian Embassy building on the site.

Canada, please respect the heritage of a foreign country as much as we respect ours by preserving even the most innocuous little heritage building.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Oliver CastleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ is one of the last surviving heritage homes in the City of Colombo.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It was built in the 1800s and it represents a period in Sri Lankan history when Sri Lanka (Ceylon) entered the international export trade on an international scale and achieved unimaginable success..ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The wealth amassed by such merchants was unprecedented in the history of Sri Lanka and so were the mansions built by them.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Oliver CastleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ is one such mansion built by Henry Joseph Peiris, a leading plumbago (graphite) exporter, renter, plantation owner and philanthropist of that era who was born in 1858.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  His mines were equipped with state-of-the-art steam pumping gear and he employed thousands of workers in his many business ventures.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Messrs. Bert & Co., of Ashton Lodge acted as his agent in the United Kingdom.
