ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
It is ashame to see a Channel 4 pervert journalist, accosting our Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Major General Shavendra Silva, on the PAVEMENT. That Journalist of Channel 4 appeared like a Street Urchin askingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ totally irrelevant questions from a Diplomat, aƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Deputy Ambassador of the United Nations, which is tantamount to intimidation and humiliation,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in a Public Place. When the Deputy AmbassadorƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ politely asked ” who told you ” the street urchin Journalist said, ‘” I cannot tell you ‘” which is arrogantly impudent. It is a very clear thatƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the Channel 4 Journalist is attempting to insult and humiliate a Deputy Ambassador of the United Nations, while acting insolently, in his capacity as a Journalist
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
So,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ What are we waiting for ?
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
It is time thatƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ YOU, The Defence Secretary, sent the cream of our Legal Luminaries to UK to file a LibelƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ action against The Channel 4, and all the Actors,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ acting in concert to expose to the public, fraudulent concoctedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ videos, with absolutely no authenticity.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ActionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ can be filed through the Independent Regulator, The Telecommunication… OFCOM, and also through the Independent Press Complaints Commission for :-
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
A)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Libel,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ forƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ exposing mala-fide concocted videos,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ against a Democratically elected Country of Sri Lanka,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
B)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Defamation, for intimidating and humiliating ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ our Deputy Ambassador to The United Nations, Major General ShavendraƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Silva, on the Pavement, not forgetting His Diplomatic Status, and
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
C)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Defamation, for acting mala-fide against the Defence Secretary Of Sri Lanka, with Lies and Deception.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
I firmly believe in you, Defence Secretary, that you will not, further procrastinate on this matter.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
They should be sued for aƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ MILLION BRITISH POUNDS, ON EACH COUNT,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ A), B) and C).
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
BLESSINGS OF THE TRIPLE GEM.

The LTTE diaspora was in THE forefront, in financing the Presidential bid of Hillarious Hilary Clinton. She has been barking for them ever since. LTTE rump is still active in UK, they would have no problems in financing this so called C4 journalists. There is no let up for Sri Lanka, the LTTE supporters are trying hard to disrupt any development in our country. It will be just like what they did militarily, just a futile exercise in long run.

Hi Susantha, Your are correct!
How they can they humiliate our national war hero like that.
Shavendra should have organised our white vans to pick up the Ch4 journalist before he opened his mouth! If we can do this in Colombo, why can’t we do this in NY or London?
Filing a legal case for compensation is a waste of our money because we can’t control the UK courts like in SL and we may end up paying the whole court cost! MILLION BRITISH POUNDS, ON EACH COUNT, A), B) and C)

It goes not matter how much Sri lankan ex pats ask any SL govt to do this or that they never have any capabilities to counter. The reason is not their fault, but they never had education for it to organize and counter them. And after I discovered this, I proposed to have world Sinhalese organization with separate funding to look after all matters that related Sri lanka’s security and well as security of friendly countries and keep Sri lanka politician clear of Western or any other country threat allowing Sri lanka politician to plan out a home grown plan and implement it. and if Sri lanka However, I could not do anything because I found Sinhalese in the West are not interested in it. So We can’t blame Sri lanka.

Dear Susantha and others, thank you for your views – It is disappointing to note the crass indifference and ineptitude of the performance of the Sinhalayas including SL politicians and many appointed to High Commissions on political favours! There are two courses of action available as I have noted previously on Lankaweb: (a) To complain to the UK’s broadcast regulator Ofcom for the breach of their broadcast standards – (visit http://www.ofcom.gov.uk to see what the standards are). That has been done by many including myself and I understand the matter is currently under investigation by Ofcom, which implies that Ofcom, on the face of it, appears to have already observed some breach of the standards in the CH4 video worth their time to investigate – hope the outcome is favourable to SL. (b) The other possible action is for ‘Libel’ in a UK Court and that is not easy since that course of action has to be through a firm of Media Lawyers briefed by the GoSL/ HC in the UK since verified supporting facts will have to be produced to the satisfaction of the Court for a successful result. If not CH4 will be awarded damages, a situation worse than not taking any legal action!! Taking all this into consideration it is better to wait for the outcome of the Ofcom investigation and if that turns out to be favourable that is indeed the time for the GoSL to commence litigation – S de Silva – London

Dear S de Silva, Your proposal is reasonable.
My question is how we living outside of UK can contribute? Can we still complain to Ofcom when we don’t reside in UK? If we can, what points we should state in our complain related to UK laws?
Here in Australia, we understand ABC has sought legal opinion before it aired the Ch4? That is why I believe legal case is a waste of money… I may be wrong!

S De S ! and Love_Lanka, Sri Lanka has to, through the Sri Lanka Embassy make a formal filing of a complaint, to the Independant Regulator, the Telecommunication… OFCOM, and can file a Parralel complaint with the Independant Press Complaints Commission. If either or both reports breaches of Regulatory Principles, then the door is open for a fully fledged Legal Action, for Libel and Defamation. The Action will be filed in UK Courts. Sri Lanka has many Eminent Lawyers who can take a formidable stand, with all the necessary ammuntion in hand. Nevertheless let us wait and see the outcome.

Response to “love_lanka” above – Yes, you can and should complain to Ofcom. The Ofcom criteria as I understand them is that Ofcom will entertain complaints on a program by a private broadcaster originating in the UK which is CH4 (not the BBC for which there is the alternative BBC Trust) and re-broadcast in another country where the complainant is resident – as in your case. If complaining, please be brief and stick to the topics as on their website.
Hope this helps – Good Luck – S de Silva – London
