A New Breed of Terrorists in the East Trying to Take Law into Their Dirty Hands

A new breed of terrorists is emerging in the east. Blaming police ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”inactionƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ they take the law into their own dirty hands and use it with a racist agenda. These criminal elements in the society must be identified and eliminated as soon as possible before it grows into a major cartel. Police ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”inactionƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ doesnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t allow anyone to take law into their hands! There are set punishments for crimes. No additional or different punishments can be levied upon alleged culprits according to the fantasies of mobs. Even surrendered LTTE terrorists were subjected to the norms and laws of the country. No one tortured them or punished them at will. Certainly a section of the people has no right to execute its own laws. Worse part of it is, in one such incident a group of people protested the deployment of the army which is totally unacceptable. Any violence should be matched with decisive and well channelled violence to tame these vile elements trying to raise their ugly heads once again.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In Potuvil a group of thugs attacked the police after a number of alleged criminals were arrested for the killing of a wildlife officer. Wildlife officers are engaged in detecting and punishing illegal encroachers into government reserves. It is no secret there are certain fundamentalist elements growing out of control in the east. In order to house their unsustainable growth, they encroach into state reserves. No excuse is acceptable for this type of criminal behaviour. Attacking police and protesting police action is totally unacceptable. As a result the army had to be deployed upon which the cowards ran for shelter. Now certain corrupt extremists politicians who have joined the government for position and power are trying to set free the criminals arrested using their political begging. This attempt must be defeated. If not it will become the order of the day. Hardcore criminals who are bold enough to attack the police and challenge the army will get out using political influence. That will set a very dangerous trend of repetition and spread.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Another incident took place in Katankudy within a day from the previous event. In this case an alleged criminal was assaulted by the people. No one has the right to take the law into their hands. When police was following the proper legal process of arresting the accused in order to produce before a magistrate (which it did), the hooligans went beresk protesting the move and blaming the police of a cover up. Army had to be deployed which sparked even more violent protest from the hooligans. However, the army managed to bring the situation under control. This comes in the context of a TNA organised commemoration of breeding racial hatred among Muslims and Tamils in the east. TNA politicians K Kalaiayrasan, Chairman of the Naavithanveli Pradeshiya Sabha participated while TNA parliamentarian P Ariyanethran was the chief guest. They alleged that 55 Tamil men, women and children were killed by Muslim home guards on the 12 August 1990 in Veramunai, Batticaloa. According to them, the attacks took place within the Sinthayathirai Pillayar Kovil. They allege it was in retaliation to the Kathankudy mosque massacre on the 3 August 1990 (just 9 days before).
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Organised hate generation campaigns with the participation of the TNA is surely at the root of some of these violent agitations. Since hate generation is their aim, it is unlikely these criminals will put an end to these events voluntarily. Government should intervene and put a stop to these hateful events. Tense situations created by cross accusations fuel ethnic disharmony and agitation.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ However, these events stress the need for the continued deployment of the army in the east as well as in the north. Wounds of war are not allowed to heal by TNA and other sectarian political parties. Sectarianism is their bread and butter and they will not forego any chance to incite racial hatred and violence to amass the people of their respective race towards them as a shepherd dog would gather a flock of sheep.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Firm action must be taken to cut down this emergence of a new breed of terrorists in the east. Root elements of this violence should be identified and eliminated from the society. Show them mercy and they will be emboldened; show them no mercy and they will know who is in charge.

Mr Kumar Moses,
Without knowing the facts in the East, please avoid to write nonsense and pour oil on fire.
There is no more terrorism in East. Now, the Tamils and Muslims live in peace. People say that the SLG is playing a pivotal role to destabilise the unity of Tamil speaking communities in the East after the election defeat in North.
The people of East do not care about TNA, Ltte or the unstable SLG.
Please let the People of East to live peacefully.

Kumar is one hundred percent correct and to the point.
Enough is enough and Sri Lanka does not need this kind of undesirable happenings in the East of all places.

The writer is 110% correct on this.
This is how terrorism grew in Sri Lanka in the 1970s. First naughty boys then boys turn to tigers.
Very few number of people are doing this. Most people want peace. Hopefully the government will allow them to live in peace without betraying them to trouble makers.
Who said government defeated the election in the north? They won many seats, didn’t they? Government party did very well in the north compared to previous elections.

Kumar is right. There is a long history in Sri Lanka that serious offenders are let go due to political or community pressure. No community should be allowed to carryout illegal activities becauase of their identity. As president said we are all Sri Lankans.

There shouldbe law and order in all partts of the country and citizens should feel safe where ever they are.
No to racism. I agree with Kumar.

North and East, for 30 years, knew only the brutal violence as the way of human communication. Until that generation get old they will resort to violence.
Beaides, is there any attempt from some group to develop anarchy in those areas ?. That may be be some political ploy.

In spite of what Ranjith says I can put across facts, but I do not want to write them in detail or about Muslim extremism and racism in that area in particular and elsewhere in general for as he says this may not be the appropriate time for it.
Whatever it is, suffix to say that what Kumar wrote here should be an eye opener for all patriotic Sri Lankans.

Hello Leela,
You need not elaborate in detail. Even the layman of Tamil speaking community knows what the SLG has done in the past and what they do at present.
There is no extremism or racism in the North or East.
SLG is fishing always in troubled waters and destabilise the unity of Tamil and Muslim communities in N and E.
We, Sinhalese should be blamed and ashamed of SLG’s inaction.

Leela,
Should you not share with the authorities and us the “facts” without making such a flippant comment?
Naturally, you will be the judge of the appropriate time!
The author was not aiming at the Muslim community in the East but the TNA.
TNA have no or little support in the East.
The author, needs to get his facts right.
How does one reconcile Kumar Moses daft article (sic) published in this very blog with the current one?
Allow Maldivians to Settle in Sri Lanka If Rising Sea Levels Threaten the Atoll

In my view it is stupid to allow Maldivians to settle in Sri Lanka not because they are a security threat but because there is not enough land in Sri Lanka. Maldivians are not extremists. I have worked there for over 15 years. They are very forward and religion stays where it belongs. But the fact is so many of them are Sri Lankan citizens already. So it is equally stupid not to allow them. But if Australia becomes our neighbour via an agreement with the Maldives, then we will be worse off.
Anyway we have a bigger immediate problem than rising water (which is in itself contested).
Ranjith, there is no need for Sinhalese to be ashamed of. They should be proud of the army, navy, etc. Few dozens of Muslims who engage in violence during Ramazan should be shamed of themselves.
