The ‘Banana Leaf’ bus halt – Best Design
Posted on October 7th, 2012
The ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Banana LeafƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ bus halt close to the Pitakotte junction on Parliament Road, opposite the Diyatha Garden invariably attracts the passers-by. It is a unique concept of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa. The 25-foot long structure enhances the gardenƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s beauty. The unique bus halt designed by Chartered Architect Kumudu Munasinghe which cost Rs. 2.5 million, can accommodate over 30 commuters.

It is a beautiful construction, though the colour does not blend with the background trees. It seems to me a little too expensive at Rs.2.5 million

Great work but will not cater to torrential rains in Colombo. Shade of course is fine. But wind and rain – absolutely not.

AS DO ALWAYS, EVEN THE BANANA LEAF HAS BEEN POLITICISED.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LIGHT GREEN, AND CERTAINLY NOT BLUE.
SHAME, THE ARCHITECT HAS PLAYED POLITICS. SHAME

I think blue/white colour gives a soft feeling with an elegant contemporay look than painting light green, which will definitely look ugly.
Good work and inovation by the architect but the engineer has been too conservative. Whould have been better !
2.5 million is OK allowing 1.5 million for our politicians !

A fine, contemporary design.
Suited to keep shade from sun, but not very effective for protection from heavy rain.

This is a work of art, aesthetic and could serve as a pilgrims’ rest and a picnic stop over, but I do not think its practical at all for a busy or even not so busy bus stop where commuters need to take shelter from rain on a windy day. For a bus stop, this is not value for money spent.

Everyone is praising this structure, so LTTE and the Nadu brethren will want to blow it up because it is causing “discrimination”! LOL!
