Food Industry is Conning the Consumer

Shenali D Waduge ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The global food industry is huge and includes local and international regulation for food production and sale, food safety, R&D, financial services, education, food processing, agriculture, wholesale and distribution, transportation and logistics, manufacturing and marketing. Over years, the consumers have been fooled in many ways by these very industry groups and the extent to which they have gone to make profits is shocking.
What we thought healthy we now find out is not. What doctors advised to be included into our diets have ended up causing health issues and side effects, even doctors do not know what is inside the foods we eat while they themselves are clueless about the drugs that are given to us, serving sizes labeled once when weighed is false, foods that we thought were nutritious are now said to be made of GMOs or full of chemicals and fertilizers, fruits we loved to eat are sprayed with carbide, spices are mixed ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” there is nothing that those associated with the food industry have not thought of to manipulate so as to fill their purses at the cost of our lives.
Corporate and government elite dine on safe organic food while the masses are secretly poisoned by hidden genetically modified (GMO) food. President Barack Obama demands organic food and so do many world leaders. Even MonsantoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s own employees get organic food at the company canteen ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” why do the masses have to pay and eat poisons? This list gives some companies owned by Monsanto http://thegoldenlightchannel.com/gmo-food-list-to-avoid-monsanto-companies-the-dangers-of-gmo-food/ (please read). Even Kelloggs cereals are GMO ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” do we really know what is inside the food we eat whether it is in its natural form or even as processed food?

LetƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s face it nutritious foods are expensive. But those that paid extra to drink ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-non-fatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ milk now discover there was nothing ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-non-fatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ about it! It has become easier to captivate the consumers by pricing junk food at lesser price. Even if people want to shift to nutritious foods their financial situation stops them. This is where concerned individuals need to shift their focus on and see how best they can use the power consumers hold to stop the treachery taking place in the food industry.
Moreover fruits and vegetables themselves are losing their nutrients. Is it a surprise when both are contaminated with fertilizers or sprayed with chemicals like carbide to artificially ripen them causing loss of nutrient value as well as inducing cancers and other health hazards. Gone are the days that people can eat fresh vegetables because the chances of the fertilizers impacting directly to oneƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s body is more.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚·ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Coloring = crushed bugs: carmine is a red food coloring used in red colored candies and juices which is crushed abdomen of female dactylopius coccus in other words ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a Beetle.
How Food Manufacturers Trick Consumers
We think we know the ingredients: Foods have ingredient lists ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” consumers read them and think they are buying healthy products or quality products but do consumers really know what they are eating?
Trick 1: Distributing sugars among many ingredients so sugars donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t appear on the top 3.
Manufacturers uses a combination of sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids, brown sugar, dextroseƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ etc so that the % is distributed. By shifting sugars further down the ingredient list manufacturers deceive consumers.
Trick 2: Using great sounding names (especially used for personal care products like shampoos, creams etc) You will use gracious use of ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-herbalƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-naturalƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ etc. It is called ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-label paddingƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and used in junk foods as well.
Trick 3: Hiding dangerous ingredients using innocent-sounding names.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Sodium Nitrate is highly cancerous. Carmine food coloring is made from smashed bodies of red cochineal beetles. If labels had ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-insect-based food coloringƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ no one would buy it ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” so carmine is used! Yeast extract is monosodium glutamate (MSG) ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a chemical taste enhancer to boost flavors of overly processed foods.
Trick 4 ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Fooling us by the name of product ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Just because companies label ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-guacamole dipƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ it contains no avocado instead it is hydrogenated soybean oil and artificial green coloring chemicals. The same is being done to green peas. ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-CheeseƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ crackers donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t contain real cheese, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-creamyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ doesnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t contain cream, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-fruitƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ doesnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t contain fruitƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦
Trick 5 ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” Ingredient lists exclude chemical contaminants, bisphenol-A, PCBs and other toxic substances.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The consumer are fooled because requirement for listing food ingredients was a joint creation by governments and private food industry. Initially the food industry refused to list any ingredients citing ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-proprietorshipƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ then they moved on to fooling people with bogus labels. For decades the consumers are fooled about the chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals that they consume on a daily basis.
Trick 6 ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” false serving sizes because food containing 0.5gms or less of trans fatty acids per serving is allowed so the labels carry ZERO trans fat. How can 0.5=0 ? Companies also reduce the serving sizes so that they can claim Zero.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If a biscuit has 0.5 trans fat ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”if a person eats 10 biscuits he will consume 5gms of transfat.
Tips to read ingredient labels
1.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Ingredients are listed in order of their proportion. The 1st 3 ingredients are the most important.
2.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If ingredients contain difficult chemical-sounding words ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t purchase it because it is likely to contain chemicals.
3.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ DonƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t fall for the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-herbsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚
4.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Ingredients lists DO NOT NEED to list chemical contaminants therefore pesticides, perchlorate (rocket fuel) can be inside foods but are not listed. Therefore, people need to start moving away from processed foods.
5.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Companies are permitted to use ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-wheatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ in flour that is processed, bleached. Therefore look for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-whole grain wheat flourƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.
6.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Brown products are not healthier than white products. Brown sugar is a gimmick because brown coloring and flavor is added to white sugar.
And for the tobacco smokers who may not know that 90% US tobacco smoke is GMO which means they are smoking pesticides!
The bottomline is that health authorities cannot and are unable to protect the consumers from the tricks and deceits committed by the food industry. It is for consumers themselves to realize the poisons they are consuming and also educate their children about the dangers. It is also wise for households to start growing organic foods or start growing organic vegetables and sharing amongst each other as well as exerting pressures by stopping purchasing items so that when the industry feels the pinch they would get the message and stop their conniving and deceitful ways. When prices are purposely raised under fictitious demand scenario ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” buy the vegetables that are fairly priced.
It is also a good time for people to think of their own food habits and to realize that the world will face a food shortage and therefore we need to adjust our ways and a good start would be to think of curtailing the consumption of meat which will invariably put an end to the business of killing meat so that we can return to a more pro-agriculture drive to rebuild the planet that we are ruining some knowingly and others unknowingly.
It is also a good time for aspiring entrepreneurs to start a FRESH food drive to counter the Fast food menace but to ensure that the foods sold are not the same as fast food under a new name ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the people have been fooled enough.
Consumers are powerful in many ways and a united effort will certainly help curtail some of the crimes being committed. If consumers refuse to purchase what the food industry is selling using deceitful ways ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the food industry will get the message and hopefully change.

Shenali ! Please let me add just two foods that I know, that is positively not pure, as the label confirms. One is “PURE KITUL TREACLE ” and the other is ” PURE KITUL JAGGERY ” Both contain atleast 40% Sugar.
I worked for a Company that bottles Kitul Treacle. I spoke to the Supplier who supplies bulk Kitul Treacle in plastic 5 gallon cans. When I asked him whether it was pure Kitul, which I knew it was not, he said,~~ Sir, I cannot supply pure Kitul Treacle at the price they are paying, it is mixed with Sugar. Then I asked him whether he can bring me two gallons of Pure Kitul Treacle, and I will pay any price that he wants. He agreed, and brought it for me, at almost twice the price. It was truly PURE KITUL TREACLE, which I canned in large Tins and brought to USA. This was identical to the Kitul treacle I used to buy from Matale and Mahiyangana, long years back. When the demand increased, they increased the bulk with sugar. Pure Kitul Treacle is vitually black in colour, and has a light brown foam, with a lovely aroma. If shaken it forments. That is one reason why they dilute it with Sugar. PURE KITUL TREACLE SHOULD ONLY BE CANNED.
Pure Kitul Jaggery naturally is soft in composition, and is very tasty. That is why it is wrapped in palm leaf. This could be said of long years ago. Now even the palm leaf wrapped jaggery is mixed with sugar. A clear proof of this is that, now Kitul Jaggery is processed as Hard rectangular blocks. It is so hard that you need a hammer to break it up. This is the quality available just now in USA. It is a heavily sugar based product.
People who are Diabetic, tend to avoid sugar, and use Kitul Treacle and Kitul Jaggery, little knowing that their Diabetic conditioning is worsening without their knowledge. Commercial trickery has no bounds. This is homicide in instalments, by Companies that cheat people, for bigger profits. Shame !
I would prefer to pay any price for the ” PURE KITUL TREACLE AND PURE KITUL JAGGERY ” but no, it is not available anywhere. I spoke to a Sri Lankan in USA who imports these items amongst others. He said OK, but I believe he too cannot get the pure product.
So what is the Government doing about it ? What is the consumer products regulatory body doing about it ? SWEET NOTHING.

Just one more thing I would like to add. When I was in Kandy, I used to go to Pahala Udispattu, which is a small village in Teldeniya, leading to Udispattu, and then to Pahala Udispattu. I have virtually been to every house that manufactures PURE KITUL JAGGERY for their living. They fill the boiled Kitul treacle in coconut shells to make the real Kitul Jaggery. One must go there to believe it.

Shampoos were developed in the developed countries because of the industrial revolution water became very hard and soap did not dissolve in water. So, with the stronger detergents, shampoos were manufactured. shampoos caused problems to people as it stripped even the skin oil and caused skin problems because of that conditioners with oil in it were introduced.
I don’t think Sri Lanka needs shampoos and conditioners even thought Kalusuddhas go for anything foreign.
Shampoos and conditioners have many carcinogenic compounds. Some manufacturers manufacture those with technical grade chemicals instead of using pharmaceutical grade chemicals.
The best food style is the food style that Sinhala villagers are used to. In here, even NEw yorkers eat that kind of vegetables etc.,etc, and they say pay high prices for it saying ORGANIC. they eat fish instead meat saying fish Omega – Omega 6 or 9 fatty acids. Many love raw vegetables and green leaves and brag about the health of those.
Sri Lankans I think are getting used to the western food style which is responsible for 40% of the cancer deaths in North America.
Any way, Shenali has been directed to talk about food instead of the 13th amendment or related politics.

Proper labeling & packaging of food also has to happen. Also do NOT allow GM (genetically modified) foods to enter the country. Find new ways to safely extend shelf life of foods. I remember buying fish in the suburbs of Colombo only to find it laced with kerosine (used as a preservative). In the old days, pickling, salting and drying of fish & veggies was the healthier method employed to preserve food. In modern times, various harmful preservatives could be used. Ascorbic acid
(Vit.C) is safest preservative, as far as I know.
Instead of spending money on our useless PCs, it is better to spend taxpayer funds on a superb Food & Marketing Dept. to ensure/monitor a clean & wholesome food supply in Sri Lanka.. Likewise, GoSL should be monitoring for clean air & water supplies in Lanka.
Sri Lankans should stop all wasteful so called ‘ethnic’ infighting within the country, get rid of the 13-A, and concentrate on what really matters for the citizens of Lanka – wholesome, clean food, air & water, among other important life supportive matters. This is the only way to have a win-win situation.
