Land Grab Lies Exposed: The Truth about the Actors

On July 22 Tamil National Peoples’ Front (TNPF) organized a protest against what it alleged as a ‘land grab’ by the military. The protest was held in Jaffna and Vanni. TNPF was not elected to parliament by the people at the last general election. Now it is using these tactics to change its political misfortune.
An old Tamil woman from Jaffna featured prominently in Tamil media around the world. Tamil media showed her as poor and as an innocent victim of ‘land grab’. The truth is the complete opposite.
The truth is she was compensated by the military a few years ago when it purchased part of the 40 acre land she claims as hers a couple of years ago. However, things changed dramatically in the north thanks to the development drive of the government. There was no railway line in this part a couple of years ago. Today there is a newly laid railway line (as before 1989) and a railway station close to the land concerned. That increased to price of the land by many times. Hence the renewed interest in it.
The person concerned owns several lands, buildings and trading businesses in Jaffna city, rural Jaffna, Colombo city and Batticaloa. Some of these are even rented out to government offices. She makes a few foreign trips every year to visit her family in Canada.
It is very unfair by the neighbours of this land if she can acquire land by staging a protest. The neighbours don’t resort to these gutter tactics that discredits the nation, erodes faith in the Land Registry, bypasses the legal procedure and unfairly rewards those to protest.
Tamil people in the north commend the government for the yeoman service it has done to the north after three decades of destructive war. Tamil people in the north are not against fellow Sinhalese and Muslims coming back to Jaffna. All what Tamil people ask from the government is not to yield into unfair pressures, cries and threats. Please uphold the law regardless who cries and who praises. Owners, not protestors, must own land. Thank you.
