මහාචාර්ය හෙට්ටිආරච්චි විසින් ලංකා විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයීය ඉතිහාසයේ දක්වූ වෙනත් ආර්ය හෝ අනාර්ය කිසිදු භාෂාවක නැති එහෙත් සිංහල භාෂාවේ පමණක් ඇති වචන—-ඇපය ,ඔලුව කකුල,කට, කලාව, කුල්ල, තොල, පැදුර, පොත්ත, බද, ලිඳ ,ලිප, විලුඹ මේ වචන ආර්යාගමනයට පෙර භාවිථවූ වචන වියහැකි බව එතුමාගේ අදහසය්. ……….. මේවා ටැමිල් මුන්ඩා යය්ද හෙට්ටිආරච්චි එසේ කියා තිබේ යය් ද බොරු කියමින් 1984 04 08 දින james ratnam හා ජයරාජන් දේශනා පැවැත්වූ හ. හෙට්ටිආරච්චි කිව්වේ ආර්ය හෝ අනාර්ය කිසිම භාෂාවකට මේවා අයත් නොවන බව ය දෙමලු මේවා විකුර්තිකරමින් තම දරු වන්ට උගන්වති .

How do you know about these reports ? What are the sources ? Without proof , only we will believe these facts.

This is common to most Buddhist countries. In Korea, for example, before year 2000 ( and possibly even now) people do not lock their houses, cars etc.

Your last sentence has a connotation of ‘impermanence’. Although Buddhists are taught about impermanence I do not think hey believe in it. If not we would have gone down to the colonial rulers and fully accepted them or later succumbed to the forces that nurtured terrorism. Nor are we a nation of idling set of people described by a former governor of Ceylon in a letter to his colonial office in London in 1805. We a vibrant democracy having a temporary aberration. If you get up early morning and look around (in Colombo area) you will see everybody very busy trying to go to their places of work or actually engaged in some useful work. Therefore the impermanence should be given a new meaning and that is not to remain in the same hopeless situation you are in, but to try hard to better your life.

You need to read much more for a good knowledge of Buddhism.
“Therefore the impermanence should be given a new meaning and that is not to remain in the same hopeless situation you are in, but to try hard to better your life.” statement proves you are criticizing without probing, simply just being lazy on this.
Buddha’s last words were “strive with diligence”, not “be sad and wait until die”. Every advice by Buddha is about immense struggle to achieve happiness, for both worldly success and eternal happiness.
Utthana Sampada – energy to strive to success
Aarakkha Sampada – protecting whatever earned with effort
Samajivikata – balanced livelihood
Kalyanamittata – good noble friends
required for worldly success. Noble friends will lead you to eternal success, once you achieve worldly wealth and protection.
Those who have more urgency for permanent happiness, of course can go forth to achieve it but then you need even more effort.
Laziness and lethargy has no place in Buddhism.

I do agree that “අනේ එහෙව් අපට වෙච්ච දේ…..වෙච්ච දේද කල දේද නන්ද, අනු ,,. මටත් පින් ඔබටත් පින් ,, දරුවන්ට මේවා කියා දෙන්න” does not sound good.

Thanks for writing about those four virtues that helps a person to be successful. I knew about kalyanamitta. Yes the two words Dharmasiri left out were “ane anichchan”.
On a different note I read a news item in Daily News today that our Peradeniya and Moratuwa Universities have achieved the 31st and 32nd places respectively among the South Asian universities. They are boasting as if we have made a very big achievement. How many countries are there in South Asia. These guys do not even know that we are a leading nation in the region. During our time these unis were among the topmost set in the world, on par with Imperial College. Now in world ranking we are below 4000s. What an achievement by our successive government. I told a Professor whom I met recently that they are responsible for the pathetic situation our unis are in.
We must tell MR ( and SB) that if he cannot find good academics to head these institutions at least to find some good journalists to CDN to report correctly instead of singing for supper.

I suspect these “world rankings”.
I don’t think Unis in Aus much better either and in the UK the same. It is very evident from the graduates.
I did not encounter a recent Lankan Eng graduate but I spoke to one couple of years ago ( he was a top graduate) and he was simply brilliant at least when talked, I was surprised of his general civil Eng knowledge, much better than one of the top grads in a leading Aus uni.
I also met a Struct Eng working in a leading Colombo firm about 6-9 years ago( I went there to help with their first 40 storey), I checked his ETABS model and he was doing everything right. He was a local graduate. Now he has his won firm.
I am not sure about these rankings in practical terms. I am sure our graduates still do not have the opportunities. That is all. Our A/L standard has definitely dropped, looking at the exam papers.

If Sri Lanka had a well developed language (e.g oluwa, kakula etc.)even before the Aryan mixing or invasion, that means Sri lanka had a good civilization.
Generally, Sri lankan research on History, Archaeology etc., should be focused on these things. I don’t wther they have started any thing like researching on ancient things in Sinhale.
I read about One Sri Lankan history prof who is writing anti-govt articles. His PhD dissertation should be on somethong european or British and nothing on Asian, Indian or Sri Lankan. Those are the people and the politicians who destroyed Sri Lanka.
Japan also is a buddhist country. I don’t know right now, a few decades ago, they were very honest people. We could left money unattended and no one thought taking away it.

Japan even now is OK. We left a valuable in hotel and they posted it to us ( 2 years ago).
Lankawa is not, compared to Japan, Korea. Why ? Beacuse Sudda followed by Kalu Sudda ?

I too admire Dharmasiri’s writing style and the content. At least there are two or three people writing like him in this forum.
Regarding Nanda’s comment: ” Our A/L standard has definitely dropped, looking at the exam papers.” I think they have been the same from the time we were A’ Level Students more than 50 years ago. Instead of calculator the log table is still there. Strangely we havent lost that. The questions are too difficult but do not cover the whole range that is required in the present day Engineering and scientific developments. I have compared it with CIE of UK which contain matrix algebra, numerical methods and 3D vectors that are required in computer application building. These are covered in the A/L syllabus of some ASEAN countries. I live in one of them. We need to remove the clutter in the exam papers and achieve simplicity but cover all areas that are needed in todays environment.
Regarding what we have lost, there is an interesting speech given by Hon. Vidyaratna in the parliament recently on the Utube. Readers may be able to watch it under Lankatruth website. He explains that the Oranges that we used to get from Bibila is now coming from Israel.
