War crime perpetrators should be punished – Former Sri Lanka Army Commander Field Marshal Fonseka
Sun, Jan 29, 2017, 11:46 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Jan 29, Colombo: If there are individuals who have committed war crimes, they should be punished irrespective of their status, the Minister for Regional Development and former Sri Lanka Army commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka says.
Speaking to the media after participating in a function at the Sri Lanka’s Hadabima Authority on Saturday Field Marshal Fonseka said there could have been few persons in the 200,000-strong Army who might have been responsible for the alleged war crimes.
“There might have been seven or eight in the two lakh army. If not, I don’t think it is reality,” he said.
“Any government institution would have one or two thugs, rapists and other miscreants. But they should not be shielded from punishment if they are guilty of any crime regardless of their status,” he said.
He pointed out that a handful of such people can be found within the militaries of other countries as well.
The former Army commander accused that the allegations of war crimes have been leveled against the Sri Lanka military after the former President and his brother Defense Secretary introduced politics into the Army. He said there is no point in covering the crimes, if perpetrated, to defend the former president and his supporters and bring disrepute to the entire army.
Responding to the statement made by former minister and deputy chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman at the Joint Opposition rally in Nugegoda on Friday, that he is thankful to former President for what he had done for him, Minister Fonseka said Karuna joined the government to save his life from the LTTE leader Prabhakaran’s wrath.
“Karuna Amman is someone who could not stay any longer in the terrorist movement because of his corrupt deals. He jumped to save his life from Prabhakaran,” the Field marshal said adding that he has not given any help to the Army to defeat the LTTE.
The former Army Commander said even though Karuna, who lined up and killed 600 policemen when he was in the LTTE, was close to the LTTE leader those days, he did not even give information on the location of Prabhakaran’s house. The army soldiers were the ones who found the house of the LTTE leader in Pudukudirippu but Mahinda Rajapaksa made him (Karuna) a hero.
Speaking about Sri Lanka Freedom party, Field Marshall Fonseka said certain individuals who are attempting to obtain the power of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are being continually rejected by the general public. A majority of the SLFP as well as the general public are backing President Maithripala Sirisena as well as the government, he added.

I listened to Mahinda and it was excellent. I would like somebody to publish Dr Dayan Jayatilleke’s speech on its own. He made a power packed speech and identified the three traitors against this nation. They are namely, Ranil, Mangala and Chandrika. Dayan also explained Why they are traitors and how to get rid of them. This is one of the best speeches at the Rally.
As usual, Wimal stole the show. It was brilliant how he used the few opportunities available to him and made a mockery of the sentencing meted out to him.
