I would like to express on behalf of the German Dharmaduta Society and Das Buddhistische Haus (Berlin Vihara) our deep sadness on the sudden loss of the former Ambassador to Germany the late Mr. Karunatilaka Amunugama, who passed away on December 13, 2017.
During his period of service as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Germany ( 2014 – 2017) he was a constant visitor to Das Buddhistische Haus (Berlin Vihara) in Germany, with members of his family and staff, and they extended their fullest support and patronage under his guidance to the Buddhist religious activities being conducted at the Berlin Vihara.
The Management of Das Buddhistische Haus and Buddhist monks knew him personally and were deeply appreciative of his abiding interest in the maintenance and upkeep of the Berlin Vihara and the strengthening of Buddhist cultural links between Sri Lanka and Germany, among other notable contributions.
He was a versatile career diplomat having served as an envoy of Sri Lanka to several countries e.g. Japan, China, Thailand and Germany. He also served as the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He will be missed at the Berlin Vihara and among Buddhists in general in Germany. He organized several Vesak festivals at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Berlin and Buddhist Seminars inviting prominent German and European intellectuals to take part.
He was one of the best career diplomats that Sri Lanka has ever produced always conscious of his loyalty and duties to his motherland.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his beloved wife and members of his family.
May his sojourn in Sansara be short.
