Apart from these fishermen, other ones from Ramanthapuram and Tanjore district were also taken into custody. The fishermen were taken to Karainagar Navy base camp for further enquiry.
It was found out that the fishermen were catching Bhetki fish – a widely sought after export variety of fish.
The fishermen said they were pushed to the other side of the international border by heavy winds. They were handed over to the Sri Lankan fisheries officer at Jaffna for further enquiry.
