President disapproves revealing state intelligence information at Select Committee

President Maithripala Sirisena says he disapproves bringing in state intelligence officers before the Special Parliamentary Select Committee looking into the Easter attacks and revealing state intelligence information via media.

The president stated this during the monthly assembly of the senior officers of the Department of Police held at the Presidential Secretariat today (07).

Stating that suspended officers were thus far called before the committee, the President said that officers currently serving in the security forces will not be summoned to the committee meetings. He stressed he would take responsibility regarding all of them.

The President further commented, the Attorney General has written to him that five lawsuits pertaining to the attacks on April 21st are currently being heard before the Supreme Court, however, a Special Parliamentary Select Committee operating parallelly is unfavourable for the Supreme Court’s procedures. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was notified on the matter, he added.

Although the Speaker customary announces the documents submitted to him by the President at the commencement of the parliamentary session, this was not mentioned by the Speaker, President Sirisena claimed.
