Make Buddha Jayanthi an occasion to ask, after 2600 years what have we accomplished as Buddhists ?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Queen Mahamaya Devi while on her way toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  her parental home to have her babyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  according to ancient custom, gave birth to a baby boy in the Lumbini Park in Kapilawattu .ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The fatherƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Sakyan King SuddhodanaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  was overjoyed with the birth of a son.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ But the kingƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s joy did not last long asƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Queen Mahamaya Devi died seven days after the birth of the Prince.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The baby was placed in the care ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  his step mother Maha Pajapati Gotami, the younger sister ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the late queen.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Ascetic AsitaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  KaladevelaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  came toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  pay respect to the King and to see the new born little Prince.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Having seen the baby the great Ascetic predicted that the Prince willƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  be enlightenedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  becoming a Buddha, but regretted that he would not be there on theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  blissful dayƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  as he would be dead by then.

At a namingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ceremony five daysƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  after his birth the little Prince was named Siddhattha Gotama . One of the eight Brahmins Kondanna , who had been invited for the ceremony seeing the characteristic marks of the child said with certainty, that he would be the future Buddha.

The story of the life of the BuddhaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  recounts different incidents of significance , one of which is ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ a ploughing festival at which theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  baby Prince Siddhartha was placed in a screened canopied couch under a rose apple tree in the care of the nurses while the king and his retinueƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  participated in the ploughing festival .ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ At the height of the festivityƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the caring nurses had left the baby prince alone in the couch and moved awayƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to watch the festivities.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  When they came back to the canopied couch they found the little Prince Siddhattha seated cross legged in deep meditation.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The King Suddhodana who was informed of the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- miracleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ hastenedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to the place and surprised, made respectful salutations to his son.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ His childhood and youth were spent in royal luxury . At the still youthful age of 16 he married his young cousin Princess Yasodhara who was of his own age.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  After 13 years ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a happy married life , he had a baby son Rahula .

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ By then several incidents he had observedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  from his chariot when he ventured out side the palace gates deeply saddened him, making him aware that his blissfully happy royal life, is a contradiction of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the reality of the life of the people out side the walls of the palace. Intrigued by the sufferingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  of these peopleƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Prince Siddattha decided to renounce his royal life to follow the life of an asceticƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  search for the truth ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  suffering, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the cause ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of suffering,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a way out of suffering, andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a state of non-suffering.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Then after six years of relentless effort, he finally attained enlightenment of an all knowing purity of mind of a Samma Sam Buddha on a full moon day of a month of May about 2600 years ago.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Thereafter, he began dispensation of the truth he discovered to the world until his death at the age of 80 years.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ But what is relevant to ask ourselvesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  on this ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-holy Wesak dayƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ falling 2600 years after the Birth of the Prince Siddattha ,which the Prime Minster of Sri Lanka as the Minister of Buddha Sasana ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ proposed to celebrate in a grand scale, (along with ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ non-Buddhists), is whether the Buddha during the 45 years ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  his dispensation ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ teaching to escape from the cycle of death and birth-the Samsara , had at any occasion celebrated the anniversary of his birth, an anniversary of his first discourse to the five monks,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  or the death anniversaries of his disciples Venerable Sariputta and Venerable Mogallana who had pre-deceased him ?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Buddha did not celebrate any anniversaries nor did he in any of his discourses said that his followers should celebrateƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the anniversary of his Birth , enlightenment or death.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  But what he exhorted to his followers just before his death- parinibbana, was:

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Handa dƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚ni bhikkhavƒÆ’-¾ƒ¢¢”š¬…” ƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚mantayƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚mi vƒÆ’-¦ƒ”š‚: VayadhammƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚ sankhƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚rƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚ appamƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚dƒÆ’-¾ƒ¢¢”š¬…”na sampƒÆ’-¾ƒ”š‚dƒÆ’-¾ƒ¢¢”š¬…”tha.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-You should accomplish all that you have to accomplish without allowing mindfulness to lapse!ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

But is far from demanding of them ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to celebrate his anniversaries for the continued existence of Buddha Sasana.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

The Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne, who is also the Minister of Buddha Sasana , has to be informed that the celebration of the Buddha Jayanthi is purely among Buddhists, and that it should not be an occasion to ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ mix politics with religion ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ by setting up ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Regional Committees as proposed to OrganizeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Buddha Jayanthi Celebrations, along with non-Buddhists including as it has been ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ said the Catholic Malcolm Ranjith, the Hindu Pujaris and Muslim Mollahs.

In order to explain the reason why the Buddha Jayanthi is purely a BuddhistƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  celebrationƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  for whichƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  other religious groups should not be invited, I quote the BuddhaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s teaching to Subaddha who became his last disciple during his life time.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The BuddhaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  told Subaddha ,

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦..In whatsoever Dhamma and Discipline, Subhadda, there is not found the Noble Eightfold Path, neither is there found a true ascetic of the first, second, third, or fourth degree of saintliness. But in whatsoever Dhamma and Discipline there is found the Noble Eightfold Path, there is found a true ascetic of the first, second, third, and fourth degrees of saintliness. Now in this Dhamma and Discipline, Subhadda, is found the Noble Eightfold Path; and in it alone are also found true ascetics of the first, second, third, and fourth degrees of saintliness. Devoid of true ascetics are the systems of other teachers. But if, Subhadda, the bhikkhus live righteously, the world will not be destitute of arahats.

“In age but twenty-nine was I, Subhadda,
When I renounced the world to seek the Good;
Fifty-one years have passed since then, Subhadda,
And in all that time a wanderer have I been
In the domain of virtue and of truth,
And except therein, there is no saint
(of the first degree).

“And there is none of the second degree, nor of the third degree, nor of the fourth degree of saintliness. Devoid of true ascetics are the systems of other teachers. But if, Subhadda, the bhikkhus live righteously, the world will not be destitute of arahats.” (Maha Pari Nibbana SuttaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Translated by Sister Vajira andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Francis Story)

If the Minister of BuddhaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Sasana is unable to understand the uniqueness of the teachings of the Buddha and that, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚«ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦. Devoid of true ascetics are the systems of other teachers.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚», he should hand over his Ministry to a Buddhist who knows his religion better to organize the celebrations of the Buddha Jayanthi with Buddhists.

But it is also worth asking ourselves whether in Buddhism that we practice to-day with the rank indiscipline ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Student Bikkhu population , ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-.. there is found a true ascetic of the first, second, third, or fourth degree of saintliness .ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ? ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ If not we are no better than, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-..ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the other systems of other teachers, devoid of true saints.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

With regard to the Celebration of the Anniversary of the BuddhaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s birth, it is worth quoting again from the Maha Parinibbana Sutta, in which it is stated that ,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚«ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦. Now the Blessed One spoke to the Venerable Ananda, saying: “It may be, Ananda, that to some among you the thought will come: ‘Ended is the word of the Master; we have a Master no longer.’ But it should not, Ananda, be so considered. For that which I have proclaimed and made known as the Dhamma and the Discipline, that shall be your Master when I am gone.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚»

Hence in reality Celebrating the Buddha Jayanthi ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ is not organizing festivities, but by getting each and every Buddhist making an introspection on the day to ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ understand to what extent each oneƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  is to dayƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a true follower of the teachings of the Buddha. If ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in such a search we find that we lack the quality of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ a true follower of the teachings of the Buddha, then we should, leaving aside the celebrations, interrogate, discuss and redefine how to become true followers of the teachings.

Let us also examine, when we are preparing to celebrate the Buddha Jayanthi, how much of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the Buddhism broughtƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to Sri Lanka by Venerable Mahinda thero remains to-day.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

When the King Devenapatissa accepted the teachings, he ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ proclaimed Buddhism the state Religion of Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He then set up many places of worship and Centres of Buddhist education.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  When all that had been done he ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ asked venerable Mahinda whether the Buddha Sasana is now established in Sri Lanka.

The Venerable Mahinda said most significantly: Great King, the Sasana is established but it has not taken root.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  He then explainedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to the King, how it would take root; ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…- When a person born of parents who belong to Thambapannidipa, enters pabbajja in Thambapannidipa, learns the Vinaya in the Thambapannidipa, and recites the same inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Thambapanni dipa, then will the Sasana take root in the Island.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ ( Early History of Buddhism in Ceylon by E.W.Adikaram)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

It was then ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ found that Bikkhu Maha-ArittaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  was possessed of the qualification for the purpose and recited the Vinaya at Thuparama, thusƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  making the Buddha Sasana, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  firmly established and well rooted in the IslandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

This shows to what extent the Vinaya is important for Buddhism to continue its existence.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It is therefore necessary to ask to what extent the Buddhist Bikkhus today keep their Vinaya precepts and how many of them could recite the Vinaya Pitaka by memory.

It would therefore be appropriate that the Vinaya Pitaka is recite by Buddhist Monks in every temple in Sri Lanka on the 2600th Buddha Jayanthi.

The Sacred City of Anuradhapura was said to have been yellow with the robes of the Maha Sangha.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  There were Monasteries, Temples , Shrine Rooms, Meditation Huts, andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Halls for the gathering ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Bikkhus.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  There were no Churches, Mosques and Kovils .ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

There were Monasteries from which the sounds of the words of the Buddha were heard through out the day.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The Buddhist Bikkhus learnt the Buddhist Canonical texts which they couldƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  recite by memory. In ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the mornings there wereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Buddhist monksƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  coming out of temples and Monasteries in a disciplinedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  orderƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  one after the otherƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  according to their seniority with their begging bowls in handƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  going forƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  their alms round. The nights were calm with monks sitting in deep meditation.

There were ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Stream Entrants, Once returners, No Returners and , Arahants the Noble Ones who had reached the highest purity of mind.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  But disciplinary laxity set in gradually and the Bikkhus were divided into two categaries those who were engrossed in books-Grantha Dura, and others that followed the Dhamma- Dhamma Dura and practiced Meditation.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The last Arahat is said to be Venerable Maliyadeva who lived ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in the second century before the current era.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Since then Buddhism declined.

Later on with the coming in of the Colonial West we have Churches every where.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The Sinhala Buddhists were converted to Christianity.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Our villagers were slowly drifting away from the temple. There were Mosques, Hindu KovilsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Sinhala Kapuralas with theirƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Pitiye Deiyo and Huniyam Devathavo.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The Sinhala Buddhists got mixed up with Hinduism, and studied in Missionary Schools andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  learnt about Chritianity and attended the catechism classes.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Still later with the Muslim advent foreign teachings ate further into our culture and the Muslims came to our villages and they set up their Mosques, and made all people get up in the mornings ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to the sound of the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Muezzin calling the Muslims for their prayer.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Instead of the Buddha words recited in Temples and MonasteriesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  we hear the Muslim children learning their lessons in Arabic, hear the Church bells, and the calls of Muezzins, the noisy rituals of the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Kovils and Bhajan recitals coming ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ with the Saibaba Cult.

We have come a long way destroying the purity of the teachings of the Buddha.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The yellow robes ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  BuddhistƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Monks have taken different hues from yellow, to orange, brown and black.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  We see no more the pleasant view ofƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  well shaven yellow robedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  monks going for their alms rounds.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

[Of course the village roads also have buses ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-bigger than the roadsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, that make it impossible for even an ordinary man to walk, leave alone a monk going for his alms round.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The Minister of Buddha Sasana should ask the Minister of transport to have small size buses on village roads, to make life a little more convenient for both, bus drivers and pedestrians.]

Then the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhist Bikkhus learnt at the feet of an elderly teacher, a senior monk.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They were very learned and disciplined.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They had to keep 227 disciplinary rules. Every 15th of the month they gathered to recite the Vinaya Pitaka , to examine the extent of the discipline kept by them, and makeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  confessions of theirƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  breaches. Then there were Pirivena schools strictly for the Buddhist Bikkhus, where they studied Buddhist texts to become monks well learned in the teachings of the Buddha.

Even these are today ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the relics of the past, the Pirivena system of education disappeared.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The Bikkhus began to sit along with the lay students in University auditoriums, learning no more the Buddhist texts, but geography, economics, law, and political science.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They studied not to be great teachers of Buddhism, but to do a government job, earn money and become independent. Or eventually disrobe, marry andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  bring up a family. The Buddhist Priest evenƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  go to foreign Universities to obtain Doctorates in Buddhism to be in par with the intellectuals of the West.

The admission of the Buddhist Bikkhus to lay Universites, was the final nail on the Buddhist educationƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  privilege of having learnedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Buddhist teachersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  respective of Buddhist discipline.

And we also have BuddhistƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Bikkhus who forget their ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-station in life as Buddhist MonksƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ like Bogoda Seelawimala theroƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  who has ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ proudly accepted an invitation to a royal wedding.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  It is perhaps a sort of attainingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  a social ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚«ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ NibbanaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚» for him.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  A highest possible social achievement being the first Buddhist Monk invited to a Royal Wedding.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  And we had ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ also another BikkhuƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  who had the great privilege once to ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚kissƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ the PopeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s ring in the Vatican.

The young Buddhist Priests gave up shaving hair on the head, quoting Buddhist texts that the Buddha had not prescribed shaving the hair of the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ head, but to cut the hair short.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They wear the robes any way they want , resulting in many young Buddhist Bikkhus, unshaven, unclean, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-badlyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ dressed in theirƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  robes of different hues.

The Buddhist Bikkhus in Universities are ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ a disaster to the Buddha Sasana.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They go on manifestations on the roads out doing the lay students in their aggressive behaviour , and abusive language.

The Wesak day has turned out to be a period of Carnival, a commercial event putting up pandols or Wesak thoran to ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compete with ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ one another.

Less and less families go to temples on the poya days.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ThereƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  areƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Buddhists Bikkhus who cannot reciteƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  the Buddhists texts by memory.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Meditation- the heart of Buddhism is forgotten in most temples, giving place to Bodhi puja, Kavi Bana -discourses recited in poetry form.

Now after 2600 years of Buddhism we also ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ have Buddhist monks who are Company Directors, one even a ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ President of a ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Nurses Trade Union,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Buddhist Monks as Administrators in ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Government Service, Lawyers and Parliamentarians, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhist Monks who ride motor cycles, drive cars.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There were Buddhist monks arrested for digging temple Statues in search of treasure, and ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ selling Buddha Relics, and arrested for various crimes.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ There is conversion of poor villagers by differentƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Christian Missionaries going unchecked. Sri Lanka being a Buddhist Country could not even pass a Parliamentary Bill Against Conversion.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Catholic Church has established itself well in the country dictating terms to the Government. They Build Churches any where with out the consent of the Government .ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  They bury metal crosses in Buddhist sacred areas and dig them out to exhibit as archeological relics.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ They are so powerful the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka cannot even organize aƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  purely Buddhist function like ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddha Jayanthi without bringing in the most anti-Buddhist Catholics to be in the Organising Committee.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ When Sri Lanka celebrated another Buddha Jayanthi ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ many years ago, we had Buddhist Giants like ,Prof. G.P.Malalasekera, L.H. Mettananda, Venerable Abanwelle Siddhartha, Ven. Haliyale Sumanatissa, Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya, Ven. Palonnaruwe Vimaladhamma, Ven. Madihe Pannaseeha, Ven. Henpitagedera Gnanaseeha, P.de S. Kularatne, Dr.Tennekoon Wimalananda and D.C. Wijayawardena, who were prepared to come forward to protect Buddhism.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ To-day unfortunately we seem to haveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  none to defend our Buddhist values, and the Catholic ChurchƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  has taken over a greater role, and the Buddhist revivalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  faces many challenges.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This is the situation of the ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Buddhism of the Sakya Muni Gautama Buddha nowƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  in Sri Lanka, but we ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ are still going to celebrate the 2600th Buddha Jayanthi this May, without addressing ourselves to the more important question of ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ how to stop further degeneration of the Buddha Sasana.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ To be continuedƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦..

Please , Charles , do not use the word Buddhist Bikkhus to those people who hiding in robes.
It is the time that the Government should pass legislations to disrobe all these people who are a disgrace to Buddhism.

  2. Ben_silva Says:

It is a good question to ask, after 2600 years what have we accomplished as Buddhists ?. Sunil has explained well how we lost our villages and how our people got converted and how our villages are woken up in the morning. I may add, we have lost the North, the North East, the hill country and now even the Capital. Rich people (considerable number of non Sinhalese ) live in isolation, surrounded by high security walls to prevent intruders, economic power in the hands of non Sinhalese, Rampant corruption, thefts, deception, indicating general lack of values and morality. Old people and disabled people, homeless and begging in the street. Lawlessness in the streets, where cars, driven by well to do people, disregard safety and even decency. We were also living as second class citizens in our own country under Western imperialists for over 200 years and at times under Tamil invaders. If RW was allowed to run the country and Praba given a place, we would have been pushed to the sea and made extinct. Have we got our mission correct ? Shame Nalanda Buddhists managed to beat us. Only consolation is Indians usually do things better.

  3. Sri Rohana Says:

Dear Ben Ref to your comments on 13th April.
North, East and Hill country of Sri Lanka occupied by tamil nadians with the blessing of English invaders. It is nothing to do with Buddhism. If not Buddhism at this moment there aren’t a country called Sri Lanka in world map. It is definitely another district of tamil nadu. Then you are not “Ben” you may be Karuppaiya, Suppaiya, nallaiya, velusami or velupillai. Colombo may another slum city. You have to crawl at the kovil and pray “Ada Vanai muruga”. You will treat as a sub human if you born to a shudra caste.

As we know majority of Northern tamils brought by Dutch for tobacco cultivations. They were tobacco farmers therefore they were belongs to vellala caste (farmers). According to Hinduism they don’t have farmers cast. They have mainly four castes. Brahmis (Hindu priests who born/ originated from Brahmas mouth), Kshstriya (Kings, ministers who born/originated from Brahmas shoulders) Vaisha (traders, Soldiers, Administrators who born/originated from Brahmas Thigh) Shudra (Scavengers and manual workers who born/originated from Brahmas toes).
In Jaffna caste system is start from farmers caste (vella). That itself a proof that tamils were originated from tobacco farming. If they are Hindus caste system has to start with Brahmin, Kshtriya, Vaisha and Shudra etc. After British invasion of Sri Lanka in 1815 they allowed tamils to come to Sri Lanka and this is how tamils became majority in northern Sri Lanka.

Eastern tamils brought after 1848 Uva-Wellassa (east of Sri Lanka) freedom fight against British invaders. British massacred Uva- Wellassa every male over 15 years of age and destroyed entire civilization of eastern Sri Lanka in 1848 and brought tamil nadu tamils and muslims to occupy eastern Sri Lanka.
British’s brought tamils for tea, rubber plantation laborers and now they called up-country tamils. For toddy industry they brought Kerala Malayalis. Chetti nadu chetti people came and settled in Colombo/ Negombo/ Ja ela and they called as Colombo chettis. Sakkili tamils brought by British to clean toilets and other scavenger work in Colombo and other cities. Port labourers, Road workers, Railway workers also brought from tamil country by British as they were cheep laborers.
This is how tamils became 10% of Sri Lanka population. This is neither a weakness of Buddhism.

Ref to your “corruption, thefts, deception, indicating general lack of values and morality. Old people and disabled people, homeless and begging in the street. Lawlessness in the streets, where cars, driven by well to do people, disregard safety and even decency.”

These are common in every capitalist country and it is part and partial of capitalism. Capitalism introduced to us by British invaders in 1833. In U.S.A, U.K, France, Italy, India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel or Christian, Catholic, Hindu or Muslim any country you can find all those descriptions in common. It is capitalism none related to weakness of Buddhism.

Response to Siri: To a certain degree, I would agree that Buddism is/was the glue holdng the Sinhalese together. However some argue that we fought off invaders due to our native Sinhala wisdom and not because of Buddhism. Those BUddhists in the silk route did not survive and easily yielded to invaders. So really, Buddhism has not helped them to protect their country. On the contrary Buddhism, due to its passive nature made them sitting ducks. Further, if we are not passive we would have thought more of defence and ejected invaders rather than leave to Karma. Further, the Chinese and the Indians have not become less patriotic after they dumped Buddhism. In fact after the Chinese and the Indians dumped Buddhism, they have become more capable of defending themselves and economically stronger. So this supports the theory that following Buddhism would have made them weaker, as shown by history. The weakness of Buddhism is the passive nature and less competitive spirit, it is promoting.
Treatment of disabled and voiceless poor show that compassion which is Buddhism is not put into practice – Is Buddhism working then ?

  6. Fran Diaz Says:

If one SL rupee equalled $100, we would have Buddhism & Vesak celebrated on a ‘grand scale’ in every country ! So, it all boils down to moneys worth and the show it can give, isn’t it ? Christians celebrate X’mas on a grand material scale because it is a way to overcome winter in the cold climes and also a way to keep business activity at a high pitch. Actually, Jesus is supposed to have been born sometime in middle of the year and not in December, as indicated by the configuration of stars etc. at that time.

Are we not merely transposing a cold climes activity here together with the western habits of spending extravagantly on shows, if we ‘celebrate’ Vesak in the western way of ‘grand shows’ ?. Or is it to please tourists ?

Celebrating Buddha through Vesak should be left to the individual, as is usually so meaningfully done in Lanka. Do we have to put up grand shows externally when the “Truth is within You” (Buddha). Besides, a few wealthy individuals can always put up the showy ‘pandal’ if it pleases them. To us, dhana, seela, bhavana, and looking after the poor & the underprivileged are far more meaningful activities than putting up ‘shows’.

Look after the PEOPLE first, and Buddhism will be automatically looked after. Buddhism lives in the Hearts & Minds of the People.

We must learn not to repeat legends about Gotham Buddha’s early life handed down from generation to generation. This is what happened to Charles when he wrote about Prince Siddhartha when he was few weeks old: sat cross legged and was meditating. A nurse who was to look after him moved away for few minutes and when she returned she saw that the baby prince was seated and was meditating. This is a blatant lie. This story and others were handed down by the head priest (Nayake Hamuduruwoe) in every temple. The temple in Matale where Charles went when he was a child, the head priest said the same thing. After reading the article, I saw few names and the one caught my eye was L.H. Methananda.
He was the principal at Ananda College, Maradana, when I was a student there. Buddhism was taught by late Kotagama Wacheeswara. At that time he had only a MA degree later he came to England and got many other degrees PhD, DLitt etc. Course work for the class was from a book he wrote; “Budusarana” Published by M.D. Guanasena publishers. Unfortunately Charles did not have a great teacher like I had, Kotagama Wacheeswara, if not I would be thinking the same way Charles thinks about the Gotham Buddha’s child hood. When I was a child my parents took me to Welgama, Bulathsinhala, Sri Subiksharamaya because it was walking distance from our house, next was the Wrakagoda Galena Rajamahaviharaya. Both head priests told the same story like Charles has written.

In his book Late Kotagama Wacheeswara (Unfortunately he passed away at a very young age. He went to the hospital for a hernia surgery and did not wake up) logically explains why Shdaratha Gothama wouldn’t have sat down and meditated at that early age as Charles put it. It is because he had to learn and then attend the Buddha hood. He was not born as Buddha. That is why he went all over the world walking to find the truth. Next Price Siddhartha’s birth, in this book, he also explains logically how it happened. Mahamaya was on her way to stay and give birth to her first child at her father’s house. On the way she was not feeling well and asked the entourage stop near a beautiful lake in Lumbini, Nepal. After a bath she sat down and died. A surgeon in the party did a scissorian section and pulled the child out. He was a big child and had lots of hair on his head it was not an abnormal thing, this happens today as well. He certainly did not walk after his birth and seven lotus flowers did not come out of the ground for him to walk on.

So it is not only the Prime Minister who should understand what Gotham Buddha preached but also the other followers. Charles is absolutely correct to state that the Buddha Jayanthi is only for Buddhists. As Charles states, Gotham Buddha stated what I preach will never be understood by INDIANS, because they are stupid, they are confused by worshiping too many gods. It will be understood only by people outside of India. I was blessed by the great teacher I had, late Professor Kotagama Wacheeswara. If Charles had a chance to follow his class this article would have been different. The only condition I had was not to discuss what he teaches at the class with my mother.
