Sri Lanka, beware of the American Trojan Horse!

After delivering a body blow to Sri Lanka at the 19th Sessions of the UNHCR in Geneva on 20 March 2012 on alleged human rights violations, the US is now sending a team of business leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors to Sri Lanka to enhance bilateral economic relationships.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Investors in business concerns are not generally concerned about bilateral relationships: what they want, quite rightly, is their investments to produce good returns that go in their direction. The Americans cannot be any different from these.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Sri Lanka has suffered immensely at the hands of the economic entrepreneurs and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”aid-givingƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ NGOs. There was a time when innumerable charity institutions from Norway had made the North of Sri Lanka almost their permanent home. They were there to help ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” or everyone was told – the locals in boat building, fishing industry and other such highly laudable endeavours. However the extent to which these goals were realised had been questioned many a time, with allegations that the knowhow, the machinery and the products had been transferred to the LTTE terrorists. Furthermore Norwegian groups are alleged to have been instrumental in settling in the Kilinochchi and Vavuniya regions tens of thousands of up country Tamils who were being repatriated to India.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ It is not in the too distant past that ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”benevolentƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ Americans, which included the then US Ambassador in Sri Lanka, arranged teams of local politicians from the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka to visit East Timor to study how the country functioned after the separation from Indonesia. The choice of a new nation that had just emerged on the world stage for the study tour raised many eyebrows among Sri Lankans who valued the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their motherland.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ It is essential that proper mechanisms are in place to ensure that the foreign investors engage solely in the professed businesses and all financial dealings are done in a transparent manner in accordance with the legal stipulations that have been promulgated by the Central Bank. Sri Lanka should not leave room for a repetition of the mistakes of yesteryear when the white man comes with goodies to help the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”nativesƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢.

I think it came almost close to become a trogen Horse.
Anyway, interesting thing is even some – Sri Lankan Sinhala politicians supported UNHCR. Generally, there should be an agreement among Sinhala politicians when they face problems important to Sri Lanka. In reality, every politician whether governing parties or the opposition should confront the racist TNA which work against Sri Lanka. Instead both groups woo TNA secretly as well as openly. The worst thing was, Ranil Wickramsinghe at the same time went to Mulativu and said that the govt has NOT done enough. That I think is absurd.

AnuD,
Agreed. All Sinhala must unite. But the problem is some of them are not Sinhala although they pretend to be !

Sri Lanka has to put proper Laws & mechanisms in place with follow through prior to letting powerful countries invest here.
GoSL must have the guts to confront those who have failed to adhere to such Laws and remove such enterprises from Lanka.
If GoSL cannot or likely get cornered into submission and not challenge entrepreneurial law breakers, then GoSL should not entertain such ideas as foreign investment by powerful countries.

USA and India are the main cause of most problems.
They can’t stand when other people don’t worship them.

How can the US talk from both ends of the same mouth at the same time?
Easy, because they are SHAMELESS HYPOCRITES. That is HOW!

Complete Sethusamudram project at earliest: DMK

March 29, 2012
CHENNAI: Union ministers and MPs belonging to the DMK Thursday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to implement the Sethusamudram project at the earliest.
They submitted a memorandum a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa wrote to Singh asking him to declare Ram Sethu, also known as Adam’s Bridge, a national monument.
Ram Sethu will be endangered by the Sethusamudram project, which is aimed at opening the narrow Palk Strait dividing India and Sri Lanka to ships to avoid navigating Sri Lanka.
According to the DMK memorandum released to the media here, the project is unique and was launched with the aim of providing an economic uplift to the southern peninsular Indian region.
Noting that the project was inaugurated by Singh in July 2005 in Gandhi’s presence, the memorandum recalled the latter’s desire that the project be completed in three years.
The Sethusamudram project envisages the dredging of a channel across the Palk Strait to let ships sailing between the east and west coasts of India, instead of circumventing Sri Lanka.
This will lead to a saving of 424 nautical miles (780 km) and up to 30 hours of sailing time, the memorandum noted.
According to it, major portions of the project work were completed. With only 22 km of dredging work remaining, vested interests had approached the Supreme Court and obtained a stay.
The court in turn has asked the central government to specify its stand on whether Sethusamudram can be declared a national monument, the memorandum states.
“We note with anguish and dismay that those certain reactionary elements and forces inimical to the development of Tamil Nadu resorted to a discernible pattern of modus operandi to sabotage projects which could have brought immense economic benefit to the people of Tamil Nadu and India,” the DMK said.
“Any weakened response of this government to such a crucial issue will only expose the betrayal of hope and promise given to Tamil Nadu by our great leaders.”
According to the memorandum, the project will further the development of the southern peninsular region.

These grown women from the earlier ltte should be lending a helping hand with the children damaged by ltte war (per Dr Ruwan Jayatunge’s recent article to Lankaweb). If not giving direct help, they ought to at least use the money raised from their ‘fashion show’ to help heal those damaged children. Then society in Lanka would approve, and true healing would come to these ex-ltte women too.
