Top cricketers involvement in crab killing evokes protests on Face Book
Cricketers lacking in compassion towards animals make poor role models

The story with a photo in the Sunday Times (Dec. 4, 2011) entitled ‘ Crabs for Grabs’ showing two former cricket captains looking gleefully at a giant crab in a crab shop they had set up at a food court opened in the Colombo Fort, have taken an increasing number of people including ardent cricket fans aback. .
If you lack compassion towards animals, you lack compassion.
In the current era anyone insensitive to the pain and suffering of non – human sentient beings makes a poor role model however excellent he or she may be in another field(s).
We admire their cricket and share the nation’s gratitude for the honour and glory brought to the country on the playing fields of the cricket world.
But we cannot condone their barbarism in immersing innocent live crabs in boiling hot water.
Put yourself in the shoes of the crab and ask yourself whether you would like such treatment being done to you.
Do not do to others what you would not like being done to you.
This is a basic tenet in any civilized society.
Snuffing out the life of a defenseless animal is not sporting conduct.
It is contrary to all tests of fairness. The animal has absolutely no chance.
Our national cricketers, both past and present, must strive to be good role models.
Compassion for living beings is part of Sri Lanka’s Heritage, influenced by Buddhist tenets, for over 2, 300 years.

As the BBS leader correctly pointed out, when Sinhala Buddhists succeed in business there are various disruptions to them. According to him, most disruptions are from Sinhalese themselves! If done by Tamils or Muslims, no disruptions.
Following precepts is personal business of individuals. Other top cricketers may not violate this precept but they violate another precept. Surely they are also normal human beings. As long as they don’t violate the law, they are doing the right thing.
Sri Lanka has no fatwa against killing animals for food. That’s how it must remain.
The smiling politician is also unmissable in the photo.

Cruelty to animals is banned by law in Sri Lanka – though the law is violated almost daily.
Is it not immersing a living creature like a crab in boiling water extreme cruelty? How about immersing Sangakkara or Basil or Dilrook in boiling water?
Unfortunately our legal pundits who drafted the law have not paid attention to this form cruelty
Let us not do unto others what we do not want done unto us.
Chapter 573 Cruelty to Animals: An Ordinance to make provisions for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
(Do not confuse above with a religious fatwa)
Summary: This Ordinance, in English, details Sri Lanka’s animal cruelty laws. It also provides provisions for starving animals, using disabled or ill animals for labor, killing animals with UNNECESSARY CRUELTY, and permitting diseased animals to die in the street. This ordinance also gives the Minister the power to appoint infirmaries to treat and care for animals that are the victims of offenses committed under this ordinance; the owner of the animal is liable for the cost of caring for the infirmed animal. Any Magistrate, Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police, Judge of primary Court or the divisional Assistant Government Agent of a division may direct the immediate destruction of an animal who was a victim of an offense if in that person’s opinion the animal’s sufferings are such as to render such a direction proper. Offenders shall be fined or jailed depending on the seriousness of the offence.

Killing a crab to eat is better than killing a human. Crabs are expensive for most people. Crab curry is very tasty with Murunga leaves.

Here the subject of the debate is CRUELTY TO LIVING CREATURES (man or beast) and this buffoon is talking about crab curry and its taste. What a moron!
The Chinese have graduated from boiling live crabs to boiling dogs alive.

Nimal, your sense of humour is completely out of place but you not seem to care a hoot. This is not a subject to be joked about like politics and other issues. This is a topic for serious comments because it is about cruelty to living creatures. By making such a comment (to me it sounds more cynical) shows you have absolutely no concern for these innocent creatures.
