Brutal LTTE murders in Kanakampuliadi

Bala Reporting from Chavakachcheri

30th January 2004.

A family of three including an infant, were murdered on 14th Jan 2004 in Kanakampuliyady, Chavakachcheri. Their throats were slit by sharp weapons; including that of the infant. The three are Ilankainathan Suthakaran (38), Swarnawathy Suthakaran (29) and Vathanan Suthakaran (Infant, 8 months old).

According to local sources, this brutal killing was carried out by LTTE death squads to discourage people from contacts with the security forces. On the 19th of January evening, LTTE's Thenmaradchi political leader visited the area and asked the villagers a rhetorical question. Why did this family have contacts with the army? This was a veiled threat to others. The LTTE has neither denied nor accepted responsibility for this murder.

Mother: Swarnawathy Suthakaran (29)

The murdered family was living in the High Security Zone (HSZ) controlled by the army. The LTTE has used the issue of resettling the displaced people, to call for the withdrawal of the security forces from HSZ. The LTTE discouraged people from returning to these areas prior to the withdrawal of the army.

The LTTE has continued with its project of political cleansing and low intensity conflict during the past two years of the ceasefire, leading to the killing of over forty political opponents of the LTTE, well documented by local and international human rights groups. The murder of an 8-month-old infant and the silence in the Tamil community about such a brutal murder seems to be the culmination of a culture of killing and fear perpetrated by the LTTE. Why was this family killed and why should they have been killed?

The North and East Underground has been set up by concerned individuals to try and document the atrocities that are occurring in the North and East of Sri Lanka at present. In the face of overwhelming silence within and outside our communities we are trying to send out any news possible from the North and East.
