What next Mr. President ?By Charles PereraWe are back at the square number one. What will our uncles and aunties of the International Community will come out with now. Koffi Anaan has still not made a statement, he may give us a parting advice. I am sure what ever his message, it will end with the phrase , both parties must get to the negotiating table for a peace settlement. One Norwegian uncle Jan Bholer, insists that A9 should be opened. I am sure that uncle does not know where exactly A9 is, and why Sri Lanka government has closed it down. We are in quite a soup, if not in a sambol. If we keep on listening to Norway and the International Community of uncles and aunties, we will soon be in the worst soup possible. On top of that our own Presidential hopeful, says that though the Geneva talks were unsuccessful an opening for a final solution has been created. He bemoans that the plight of the Tamils is not allowing people in the North East to vote at the last Presidential elections (and his loosing the election to Mahinda Rajapakse). Anti war gang is of the opinion that the Geneva talks were not well prepared and Jehan Perera had said, “it was perhaps due to their mistrust, perhaps due to their insistence on sticking to their positions, they failed to deal with the main issue for which they should have been meeting, which was the interest of the people”. Perhaps the next government delegation should consist of these wise men. There is, of course no negotiations possible with terrorists. They have decided on what they want, and negotiations for them is a means to some how or other have a settlement in their favour for an Eelam. There is no give and take in their negotiations. So the negotiations could go on, as long as possible, they may return to Geneva or Timbuctoo to negotiate and they will not move an inch from their demand of the Eelam. If the government or the uncles and the aunties of the International Community have not understood it so far they will not understand it in future, and will always continue to say that both sides should get together to negotiate a peace settlement. Only answer to terrorism is extermination of terrorist. But it will be difficult to flush out every pockets of terrorist. And they will spring out from wherever they are hiding from time to time when least expected. This is what is happening in Iraq, and that is the modes operandi of the Al Queida . Unfortunately the International Community with Norway, interposed is playing a ";dirty"; game with us . They think that this is too small a matter for them to intervene with all their military paraphernalia , and leads us on like donkeys holding their empty plastic carrots before us. America is the unchallenged leader of the World economically and technologically. They are better equipped to help all countries in the world to develop flushing out terrorists, giving financial and technological aid. USSR poor as they were helped the poor nations that broke away from colonialism to develop develop their contries, giving them financial and technical aid. Now we have to rely on the whim and fancy of the rich countries led by USA, who will not help us like the old USSR did. Though the government of Sri Lanka knows very well that negotiations
with the terrorists will get Sri Lanka nowhere, every thing depends
on what the International Community will decide for it. |
