LTTE attack on passenger ferry foiled

Passenger ferry transporting unarmed troops in plain civilian clothes from Northern part of the Island to the Trincomalee harbour was targeted by LTTE with heavily explosive laden suicide craft around 1430hrs today(01st August), The suicide craft had been launched to attack the passenger ferry from the uncleared area.

The Naval craft and troops, immediately responding, took prompt reactionary measures and counter - attacked that repulsed LTTE craft damaging three craft. This was the second consecutive attempt of LTTE outfit to attack the craft transporting unarmed troops that was foiled.

"When the LTTE's attempt to attack the passenger ferry transporting nearly 850 personnel was completely foiled, they started to pound artillery shells to the Naval Base, Trincomalee, from the un-cleared area in Sampoor.

The Naval spokesman Commander D K P Dassanayake, said that "however, no damages had been caused to the Navy and the propaganda unleashed by pro- LTTE Media that a Naval craft was destroyed is totally false, and that faked story is fabricated to cover up the truth that three LTTE suicide crafts were completely destroyed and their mission was totally unsuccessful".
