Appalling Administration : Bishops College

A Mother

I received on Saturday 1st July 2006 a letter. It had only 2 contents. A copy of my daughter’s birth certificate and a piece of paper that stated in no more than 3 lines that my daughter could not be admitted for the year 2006 owing to the limitation in vacancies.

What struck me first of all was – Who was this letter from? I did not see a name of the school or even the logo of the school. All the letter had was a photocopied version of the Principals signature & that her name was H. Bibile. With very little clues in front of me it occurred to me that Mrs. H. Bibile must be the Principal of Bishops College. But where was the school logo??? And I was amazed how a letter dated 30th June 2006 could arrive at my doorstep at 8:30 the next morning. Postal services must be commended.

As I absorbed the contents of the letter I was not so much worried that my daughter had been denied admission but several thoughts did enter my mind. Firstly I never applied to gain admission to Year 2006. No where in the letter did it mention whether I had applied for the Montessori or Grade One and with 2006 already half way over I doubt any school calls for admissions to Grade One in July 2006.

I was in fact happy about my daughter being denied admission. I never expected such a reputed private school to make such fallacies in simple administration procedures. Surely any letter issued from the school should carry the name and logo of the school. I may even have erred in assuming Mrs. Bibile to be the Principal of Bishops College but since I had applied to only limited schools for the year 2007 it made it easy for me to locate which school the letter was from.

We are constantly blaming people for Sri Lanka’s plight. We seem to forget that the good or bad in society are actually molded by our schools and somehow the schools and their administration should take real accountability for the plight that Sri Lanka is faced with.

I sincerely hope that all Principals take a good look at the manner in which they function. Schools should be a place of learning and more importantly a place to develop good natured young adults of the future.
