WATER, SOIL AND HUMAN INGENUITY

Daya Hewapathirane Canada

Water is among the most valuable and vital natural resources of Heladiva/Sinhalay - our motherland. The nation’s water includes not only the fresh water resources found as surface and sub surface water, but also the territorial waters surrounding the island. Throughout history, the country’s royalty or government was the custodian of the nation’s water resources.

Water, soil and human ingenuity of Sinhela Buddhists formed the primary bases of development of our motherland in the past. Our extensive network of irrigation tanks, canals and related infrastructure bear testimony to the foresight and diligence of our people in manipulating, managing and conserving water to develop and sustain a productive and peaceful livelihood for our people, which enabled them to develop a rich and exquisite culture unique to our country. It is correct to say that the overall development of our motherland was primarily dependent upon our people’s judicious use and management of the country’s water resources.

In the past, during times of South Indian Tamil speaking Dravidian invasions of our country, it was customary for these ruthless savages to destroy our irrigation works which formed the basis of the peaceful agricultural life of the people. The objective of what the racist Tamil terrorist LTTE is resorting to today is no different. They want to destroy the livelihood of the innocent people and disrupt their peaceful way of life. This should not be tolerated by the government under any circumstances. These racist savages should be repelled from these areas and their terrorist infrastructure should be eliminated.
