SRI LANKA SHOULD STAND STRONG

Ratnajeewa Halpita

The Sri Lanka Monitory Mission has done it again. They continue to be the mouth piece of the LTTE Terrorists. The out going SLMM chief has made a statement to say that the murder of the 17 NGO workers in Muttur was carried out by the SL army! The observations are made on undisclosed evidence!! Further more the SLMM chief goes on to say that he has made his conclusions on “reliable sources” whom he does not want to expose. This type of conclusions do not stand the credibility of gossip that emerge at female bathing wells! He has also spoken on a matter that is currently under investigations and this amounts to contempt of the legal system of the country. What does these men think they are?

It is good to note that it has been very elaborately and comprehensively shown by observers and eminent lawyers of Sri Lanka that the SLMM chief’s observations have a major discrepancy on dates of the said incident. The workers were murdered on a time frame where the town was under the LTTE captivity (These time frames were given by experts in forensic medicine and not by SLMM’s undisclosed gossip mongers). This shows that the SL army entered Muttur after the NGO workers were killed. This fact itself is enough to make the SLMM report null and void.

The type of “Observations” the SLMM put forward with faulty dates, unreliable and unknown sources are not even worth for a trash bin. But it is an irony that world authorities are taking such bias comments seriously and are keen on acting on these without looking in to the credibility of the report. It could be partly due to the fact that we Sri Lanka has given a high degree of recognition to the SLMM enabling them to pass judgment on a legitimate government considering them in par with an unlawful terrorist organization. This policy of the SLMM had been going on for some time and the SLMM had acted as if it is even above the GOSL. The GOSL under the previous weak leaders with “ Colonial slave” mentality had been cowered and shameless enough to cow down to these intimidations. The time has come for the GOSL to be strong and stand up to its dignity and not let these “White men” treat us as if they are our masters and let us be treated as their slaves.

This is also partly due to letting the SLMM who have been pro terrorist and anti government from the beginning to function in that way unopposed. When the LTTE found that the SLMM has got individuals that could be impartial and not to their liking, they immediately asked them to leave and not by request but by threat!! The members of the SLMM had their tails under their hind legs when the LTTE ordered them and did not raise a word in protest. They did not even listen to the GOSL request to remain in the country!! Could the difference be that the LTTE had a leadership that would not bend over in front of any one and the past GOSL leaders were doing so ever so readily? The time has come for President MR to show that he is a true son of the soil who is not ready to be made a puppet by the Colonial masters.

The SLMM chief has been extremely fast in fact finding and passing the judgment on this issue when considering the relative negligence he showed on the Sri Lankan foreign minister’s killing, the attempt on the life of the Sri Lankan army commander, Kebilithigollewa massacre and other atrocities that were obviously committed by the LTTE terrorists. Having such bias set of jokers as monitors to a peace process is detrimental to any country who is fighting to maintain its territorial integrity. The GOSL should very seriously consider asking the SLMM be replaced by another country.

It should also be noted that president MR had asked the LTTE leader to come forward directly for peace talks to arrive at a negotiated settlement to the issue. This is a very bold and straight forward invitation. If the terrorists are genuinely interested in peace, this could be their best chance and there should not be a third party to do the match making. If the terrorists are not prepared to do so they should be wiped out in order to save Sri Lanka and the Tamil community from the atrocities of the terrorists.

Sri Lanka is a sovereign country and no others should dictate terms to us on how to deal with our enemies. Especially we should not be manipulated by any other party when dealing with terrorism when the whole world is interested in eradicating terrorism. It is worth while to remember US, Britain and Australia have adopted a policy “Not to negotiate with the Terrorists” and all other countries respect and recognize their stance. They do not request US, Britain and Australia to “negotiate” or “return to the negotiating table” nor do they try to broke peace between these countries and the terrorists.
