Ref Remittances from ExpatriatesA reader. The article titled "Remittances from Expatriates" is very interesting and exemplify the non caring attitude of people in power as well as general public to poor and often exploited women domestic aids who are doing an invaluable service to us by being a primary source of foreign exchange in this very critical phase of the history of the country. I hope everyone of us appreciate their sacrifice and treat them with dignity and gratitude. Also I need to point to a different aspect of this situation. As a nation we should be ashamed that we have to send our women as domestic aids to have bread on our table. I blame our professionals more so than the politicians for this situation. Over half a century ago the public open the gates of professional education to those of us who are capable among us so that they become doctors, engineers, scientists, accountants , managers etc and guide Sri Lanka to a modern high tech economy. The public did this through a great sacrifice by investing the hard earned money (by agricutural exports and foreign aid meant for economic development). But what we have gained in returned? Absolutely nothing. As then, we still depend on plantation and foreign aid and added such "high tech" ventures as garments. Our professionals of all categories should absolutely be professionally embaraced of this situation. Think of health care, next to weapon, it is one of the most profitable ventures. Our investment in medical training shold have resulted in a health care industry bringing in revenue to Sri Lanka. Instead our doctor's professional conduct has been one of embaracement for the ethics of this noble profession. The situation is same with other professionals. Once they assume infulential positions they break every ethic of their profession to benefit themselves at the expense of the country. Worse they use the foreign money sent by these poor workers to buy luxeries, send thier kids abroad for studies etc without any hesitation. As a solution to the embaracing situation of sending women domestic aids, government should train low and middle level skill labor and employ them abroad. There is a great demand for such skills all over the world and not a difficult step to implement.
