Beware the ides of
March, Mr.President. Is UNP a dependable alley ?
We can surely do without the Norwegian
Monitors, and we can surely do without the CFA.
By Charles Perera
The bona fides of the UNP, despite GLPieris’ assurance that
the UNP-SLFP talks are successful, becomes questionable as UNP has now
appointed a committee of six , for talks with JVP seeking a consensus
on vital issues confronting the country. It may be perhaps to form a
larger opposition to the government, with the ulterior motive of manoeuvring
to vote out the government. The UNP may win back their waning popularity
with their talks with the SLFP to form a National government. Ranil
is a man who is weighing and manipulating with the one idea of becoming
the President- to hell with the country. SB Dissanayake who was a open
critic of JVP now finds them a socially adoptable company. GL Pieris
cannot be trusted any more than Ranil.
The UNP at the beginning when it was invited to form a National Government,
said that it was not looking for Ministries. But now GL proposes sharing
Ministries, and GL may even propose a Vice President, to share responsibilities
with the President Mahinda Rajapakse. That would be an ideal situation
for UNP, in case of an accident to the President Mahinda Rajapakse.
The LTTE’s bogus acceptance of peace talks, Norway’s
determination to bring together, the LTTE and the Government for talks,
Thamilselvam’s readiness to leave talks altogether if the
government forces do not stop military action, and Ranil’s
sudden call to Australia, India’s hypocritical attitude to
Sri Lankan problem, are ominous signs foreboding the gathering of storm
clouds. Beware the ides of March ! Mr. President.
Perhaps the President is being carried away, by his present popularity,
blind to what is going on around him. These very progressive ideas of
the
President Mahinda Rajapakse, could be used by miscreants and the ambitious
for their own purposes. The opposition parties fear Mahinda Rajapakse’s
popularity, yesterdays enemies, cannot be to-day’s sincere
friends. If disaster fall at this momentous period of the history of
Sri Lanka, it would be the Presidents own doing.
The President wants Norway to play a bigger role in the Government,
and a few days after this request by the President, the Norwegian Chief
of the Monitoring Mission Lars Johan Solvberg says, that the capture
of Sampur was a gross violation by the Government. Do you still place
your bets on Norway Mr. President ?
The President should read carefully the article on yesterday’s
Lanka Web-Latest news, “ Alarming Facts About the LTTE-Norway
Connectiton:
The LTTE rides high in Norway while Lanka gets torn apart . The Special
Assignment by Fedrica Jansz”. It gives goose pimples to think
of what awaits Sri Lanka government on the path Norway proposes it to
take.
Ranil and UNP are as much untrustworthy as the LTTE terrorists. Hakeem
and Thondaman are also hatching their own plans to the President’s
disaster. They are all one click working in unison, perhaps with some
traitors from SLFP digging the ground under the President’s
feet.
Dilan Perera for sure is not a well wisher of the President, soon he
is out the better it would be fror the President’s health.
In addition to this sinister images come the President’s
failure to distinguish between friends and foe. He takes enemies into
his fold leaving
his friends out in the cold.
The JVP may seem recalcitrant but there is much in what they say. The
International Community, the Western world , (except a few groups and
individuals here and there one may count on one’s fingers),
is in the “White Domination “ mind set. They are
born with that prejudice and will not easily rid them selves of it.
The USSR was an important barrier that kept the “white domination”
on the ring side, barring them from enticing the developing world from
falling into their trap of “fraternising the gullible”
( a tap on the back with a smile on the face, with, perhaps a word of
nicety “good fellow”). Now the gates of the world
are wide open for them to do what they want with small nations who are
making a frantic effort to come out of poverty and progress into future.
We should not be duped by the ambitious journalists who write to receive
the applause of the West. Specially those Sinhala journalists, harping
on Sinhala Supremacists, without understanding that it is mostly Sinhala
youth in the Sri Lanka Army who sacrifice their lives to-day, for all-
Sinhala , Tamil and Muslims, to live together in a free country. Are
they also Sinhala supremacists in the eyes of Thisaranee Gunasekara,
Jehan Perera, Gehan Perera, Kumar Rupasinghe, Uyangoda ,Wickramabahu
Karunaratne, and Vasudeva Nanayakkara ?
The President should evaluate the situation, focussing on the recent
actions of his. However much they seem to be correct and justifiable,
beware they may backfire on you Mr. President.
The CFA is redundant-it islegally a scarp of paper, and the army is
quite capable of managing the defence of the country, by valiant soldiers,
able commanding officers, and a remarkable Defence Spokesman Minister
Keheliya Rambukwella, keeping up the moral of the army. It was late
Winston Churchill’s confidence in the army, and keeping up
their courage when victory seemed impossible, that made the allies win
the World War II.
We can unhesitatingly withdraw the CFA and get the Army to take care
of the defence. That would be an honour to the soldiers and army officer
who died in this forced war against terrorism. The withdrawal of the
CFA will shut some International traps and NGO secret activity against
the government.
You would not do it Mr. President , because you do not want to antagonize
the Western World. For how long are we going to bow to the voice of
the West. For years the World Monetary Fund kept us meek and voiceless,
trying to develop the country according to their dictates, and we did
not advance an inch on the path to progress. They did not even give
us aid, but gave us loans keeping us engulfed in their “debt
trap”.
Even today under the menace of terrorism when we ask the West to stop
terrorism by using their forceful voice to disarm them, they only command
the Government to talk peace with the terrorists. Enough is enough,
we should withdraw the CFA, and buy another Kfir Air plane and bombs
that could pierce through concrete bunkers, to kill even the rats in
Kilinochchi hide out of Prabhkaran and his gang of ruthless terrorists.
Nearly half a century after Independence, we have not been able to
get rid of our colonial obedience to the “white masters”.
We still seek to please their whims and fancies, without questioning
what rights they have over us. Until our leaders get rid of their inferiority
complex we will be a subjugated Nation, running not only to the West
for approval, but also to India, not to make her feel left out.
