The Sri Lanka Security Forces should be more representative of all communities that make up the Sri Lankan Nation.

It would be a psychological impact on the LTTE, which may turn the tide against them.

By Charles Perera

The Majority of the soldiers and other personnel of the security forces who took part in the defence of the country and the Nation, against the savage terrorist invaders- calling them selves the LTTE, appears to be Sinhala Buddhists from the towns and the villages of Sri Lanka. We should have a full representation of our Nation in the Security Forces.

There is no doubt there are and there have been valiant men of other communities in the armed forces in Sri Lanka, and some of them had given their lives in this war against terrorism. One episode I have heard is of an Officer of the army, a Muslim, who had come to the rescue of his comrade- a Sinhalese, who had been wounded by the terrorists. He was seriously wounded, and was dying, he pleaded to the officer who came to save him to look after his young family, his wife and two children. The Officer promised to do so and the man died peacefully.

This Muslim Officer, generous, and true to the promise he gave, looked after the family of the dead Officer, and later married the young widow and brought up the children as his own. But unfortunately, in another rescue operation he was himself killed by the terrorist.

There were others, among them the Army Officer Late Mr.Muthalif, assassinated by the LTTE terrorists, who was from the Malay Community. There were many other Intelligence Officers, like late Mr.Medina , late Mr. Thabrew and others who were killed by the pistol gangs and grenade lobbers of the LTTE terrorists.

Mssrs. Rauf Hakeem, Thondaman, Chandrasekaran, Sangaree and others should take note and get as many young men as possible from their respective communities to join the Sri Lanka army, a formidable force that can be counted upon to protect our country and the Nation. The fact that the members of all Communities in large numbers are in the Security Forces, is bound to have a serious psychological impact on the terrorists, and turn the tide against them, luring the forced recruits of the LTTE terrorists to join the government t forces
