Anton Balasingham's Days Are Numbered?

By Darmitha-Kotte

According to past history of the LTTE atrocities, anyone who crosses their path is dealt with a "bloody farewell." It seems that Anton Balasingham has stepped outside of his TOR this time, by making a public apology for the assassination of Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and requesting India to "forget the past." Naturally, the LTTE did not receive the expected clemency from the Indian Government or its Ministers and therefore, now they have to find a way of getting out of the embarrassment. For some reason, had the Indian Government accepted their apology- it would have definitely been another story and Anton Balasingham's interview, would have been applauded by the terrorists!

It seems that the hierarchy in Wanni - Prabhakaran & Thamilselvam are not too pleased with Anton Balasingham's efforts to mediate and pacify the Indian Government. Now they talk a lot about his ill health and has been strictly advised against getting involved without the express consent of the Wanni leadership. According to a news item, a hard-core LTTE activist is reported to have said :" We LTTE don't care who it is in India we kill. I don't know why Bala(Balasingham) apologized to India. India is a poverty hole. LTTE Eelam is better." This statement is very serious given the fact that Anton Balasingham has been always on call when needed in the past! Daya Master of the LTTE has informed "The Hindu" the Chennai based Indian newspaper that " the LTTE has not accepted responsibility for the killing. Balasingham has only regretted the incident!" What more proof do we need of LTTE tactics- this is what they have always done- deny any involvement and put the blame on others to escape responsibility! Their tactics have been accepted by western governments as gospel truth unfortunately.

Now the LTTE talks about the failing health of Anton Balasingham, about his suffering from "Motor Neuron Disease "- whatever that may be? The implication is that he no longer can think clearly and act in the best interests of the terrorists.

It has also been reported that A.C.Santhan who supposedly is appointed to look after Anton Balasingham and protect him, has changed phone numbers and instructed Adele- Anton Balasingham's wife not to answer the telephone! This does not sound well at all, obviously there are threats to the Balasingham family. It could well be that there are threats to his life for Santhan to make such strict arrangements and ban any visitors to see Anton Balasingham & wife. Sad indeed it is, to be rejected after the usefulness is over!

Many are the victims of terrorist attempts to silence a difference of opinion & this is one that we need to watch carefully how the events will turn finally. As a sick man, there is not much more that he could contribute to the terrorist cause, there is no more distortions that he can make on behalf of the LTTE- therefore, it is better to keep him silent.
