We should first stop terrorism.

Peace and contentment is possible only when fear is removed, it is therefore that element of fear that has to be removed first.

By Charles Perera

The world exists on the fundamental principle of the law of cause and effect. There is nothing that happens without a cause. And the cause is rooted in greed or attachment, hatred or aversion, and being under a false belief or delusion. As long as the root causes exist the human kind will go in almost a perpetual cycle of continuous passion to exist seeking power, committing war with intermittent respites of peace and contentment, which though temporary is what they continue to fight for.

Therefore, all solutions to the ethnic problem propounded by different people, whose minds are filled with knowledge gathered from the writings and lectures of accepted intellectuals, political analysts and university scholars, are only a temporary relief to an underlying disease. None of these proposals will be a lasting solution. A solution to-day will be a problem tomorrow, and so continues this cycle of existence.

The present major problem Sri Lanka is faced with is terrorism. Other problems, though very important for the social and economic welfare of the people, is secondary to the main problem of terrorism. As peace and contentment is possible only when fear and dread that enshrouds the atmosphere is removed, it is that element of fear that has to be removed first.

However much, it is temporary, a solution has to be found sooner than later to the immediate problem of terrorism that concerns all. There are anti-war gurus of Sri Lanka, who have gone completely blind to the immediate problem of the presence of terrorism. They make proposals as the only problem facing Sri Lanka is the absence of a constitution to give the rightful place to the Tamils, and treat them as equals by the Sinhalese. Some propose federalisms, some propose devolution, and yet others symmetric administrative devolution.

Any school going child knows that we have no problem with the Muslims or Tamils we meet every day in our lives. The Tamil families living in the South of Sri Lanka , be it in villages, plantation sector, or towns , “tant bien que mal”, live in peaceful and harmonious relationship with the Sinhala and Tamil population. The Sinhala Buddhists go to Tamil Kovils and some of them even take part in temple ceremonies. The Tamil families go to Buddhist temples. The Temple of the Tooth, the Kandy Pattini Devale and Kataragama are frequented by both communities.

The Sinhala Tamil problem was created by the terrorist LTTE, and it is now being fuelled by the Sinhala anti-war camp , led by Jehan Perera, Kumar Rupsinghe, Viyangoda, Dilan Perera, Thisaranee Gunasekara, Raj Gonsalkorale, financed by the NGO’s who have their own global agenda.

All these Sinhala anti-war elements speak as if the problem in Sri Lanka has been created by the Sinhalayas. Some call them the Sinhala supremacists, and others call them the Sinhala chauvinist. Whatever one calls them the problem now facing Sri Lanka is not the making of the Sinhlayas. Therefore, each thing should be taken at its own time. The problem had been there for well over 20 years and we may wait a little more to find a workable and a lasting solution, until that solution becomes out dated in the presence of another.

The government should be given time to stop terrorism and get rid of the terrorists with whatever means is available. The International Community if they can scratch their heads a little and understand where the actual problem lies, should address the terrorists and ask them to lay down their arms and come to the negotiating table. Until then please stop calling both parties to come to an agreement.
