Security Forces Perturbed at UN Mission Comments

2006-11-13 19:37:26

SRI LANKAN SECURITY FORCES are perturbed at a couple of observations and comments that have been made today (13) by Mr. Allan Rock, the Special Advisor to the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict on Sri Lanka in a Colombo-datelined Press Release at the end of his ten-day mission to Sri Lanka.

The Mission’s allegation that “certain elements of the Government Security Forces were sometimes participating in the abductions and forced recruitment of children in the eastern Batticaloa district while supporting the LTTE Karuna faction” is regretted and completely misleading. Likewise, the Mission’s conclusions based on “eye-witness evidence” that the “Government Security Forces are actively involved in these criminal acts” deserve a deep sense of revulsion and explanation in view of their serious nature and repercussions.

It is no secret that the Mission by innuendo has gone the extra mile to blame the troops of the Sri Lankan Security Forces who are deployed in government controlled areas of eastern Batticaloa to contain LTTE violence and defend human rights in the region. The mission’s claim that “135 cases of underage recruitment” by the “so-called Karuna faction” occurred in “government controlled areas”, too infers that it was the Security Forces who are responsible for such acts.

Security Forces while dissociating itself from those allegations vehemently denies having any involvement whatsoever with the LTTE breakaway group for abductions in Batticaloa, as alleged by the Mission.
