17th November Heroes Commemorations – Toronto , Canada

JVP COMMITTEE IN CANADA

In the evening of 18th November 2006, we will be remembering the 17th death anniversary of one of the greatest and unique personality in our time, who dedicated the entire life selflessly for a better and just society for every Sri Lankan. This unique personality is Comrade Rohana Wijeweera who was born in Tangalle, Southern Sri Lanka on the Bastille Day" (14th July 1789 - The French Revolution) to become the founder and leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, the 3rd largest political party in Sri Lanka today.

He was brutally murdered on 13th November 1989 at the age of 46, by the then governing UNP regime, defying every national and international law and with gross disregards to every human right exists today.

The dedication, discipline, patriotism and selflessness the Comrade Wijeweera followed and led thousands of Sri Lankan to follow were unparallel in the History of Sri Lanka. Armed with these characteristics, JVP has been able to give leadership to whenever the motherland is in crisis, either politically or natural disasters. In the recent past, tens of thousands of JVP volunteers were the first to react constructively when the recent Tsunami catastrophe hit the South-Eastern coastline in Sri Lanka. These same discipline and self-sacrificing characteristics have created a generation of elected members of parliaments whose salaries and benefits are NOT used for personal use and instead of used for the benefits of the people. These are not only new phenomena to Sri Lankan politics, but also a new to the political systems of the world

We will be remembering these lessons taught and the qualities shown by the greatest human being of our time, the founder of JVP, comrade Rohana Wijeweera.

We would like to conclude this short introduction by quoting what Comrade Rohana Wijeweera told to the Criminal Justice Commission. What he said 35 years ago was becoming clearer and clearer in each passing year.

“Whatever the capitalist class may have expected to gain through the April incidents, their ultimate result have already been expressed by a revolutionary poet in the following stanza:

See these blossoms strewn on earth and withered lie

Their fragrance shall abide, shall never die,

To raise its sweetens high to limits limitless,

More buds will bloom and multiply.

The poet expressed himself in clear and plain terms. The flowers of revolution have blossomed, but now they lie withered and dead. But their perfume has not yet ceased. To enhance that perfume and with that aim in view other buds will continue to bloom. In fact, gentlemen, the capitalist cause have no real reason to celebrate its success. For in the class struggle victory is a see-saw until the proletariat finally emerges victorious.

'We may be killed but our voice will never die'. That is our belief. I have concluded my evidence. Comrade Rohana Wijeweera.”

“WE WILL REMEMBER YOU FOREVER”

We cordially invite all progressives to participate in the ceremony, which will be held at North York Civic Centre.
