Party Leadership & CBK in Retired Agony

Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga is now " history" as far as Sri Lanka is concerned. History will evaluate the contributions of political leaders past, present and future. Today, we still remember with respect the late Mr S.W.R.D Bandaranaike & Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the late Mr.D.S.Senanaye & Mr. Dudley Senanayake, the late Mr. R.G.Senanayake and even the late Mr.Ranasinghe Premadasa. There are yet others that we would rather forget & those are the late Mr.J.R.Jayawardane and Mrs. Chandrika Kumaratunga. These last two have done more harm to our country than can be imagined. They have been the most revengeful leaders that we have known in the recent past. Mr. Premadasa too had certain negative tendencies which ultimately brought about his unpopularity, but his organizational & administrative capabilities and sympathy towards the down-trodden ordinary man on the street must be recognized. For this, we respect him.

Through eleven years of the Executive Presidency of Chandrika Kumaratunga we have witnessed extremely low down manipulations against her adversaries, which all decent Sri Lankans in this country will be ashamed to acknowledge. As the supreme leader of this country she failed us miserably. Needless to say how hurt the majority Sinhala Buddhists of this country were about the manner in which she treated our Maha Sangha and Sinhala Buddhists, eventhough she took great pains to speak about her Buddhist upbringing and where she studied her Buddhism-unfortunately, she kept insulting the Most Venerable late Narada Thero of Vajiraramaya Temple by the mere mention that she was his student! The arrogance, the lies, the deceptions, the vindictiveness she exhibited during her tenure did not come to her from the study of Buddhism if at all she did study the subject.

Her true personality was exposed during the last Presidential Elections when she openly criticized their own party candidate for Presidency Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse and ensured that he did not get the full backing of the SLFP- this, while she called herself the "Leader of the SLFP" . The fact that Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse became the ultimate winner and successor to Chandrika Kumaratunga was a more bitter pill she had to swallow as he proved that without their support(Chandrika's and Anura's), he could still win the elections. She still wants to harass him by not relinquishing the Party Leadership as has been the practice upto this point where the Head of Government has held the post of Leader of the Party. It is quite obvious that she revels in hurting those who do not tow her line or pay homage to her.

No matter how painful it is to lose power and become and ordinary citizen overnight, Chandrika Kumaratunga has amassed adequate wealth through devious means to live like royalty in UK, France or Egypt to name only a few. There are many more which will surface in the future and we can be quite sure that they too will not be too complimentary. The citizens of this country could accept even this, had she truly done some constructive work for Sri Lanka- unfortunately this has not been the case!

All things are impermanent -today we possess power & tomorrow we may lose it; today we possess/amass wealth but tomorrow we could lose everything; today we will enjoy our family but tomorrow we may lose our loved ones. The greatest thing, is to be able to accept all changes with magnanimity & decorum. When one lives and departs graciously, such a person will be remembered with respect and love. Unfortunately, she has not lived upto these high moral standards we expected of her and her exit from public life will be one of ignominy brought about by herself and no one else.

Having such a track record in one's own country, if there are International Organizations which think it is complimentary to offer her a position in their organization, they will only be insulting the very Organizations that they represent. Offer a position to a personality that has a proven track record of achievements, she unfortunately has nothing to be proud of except for the fabricated biography which was done under her dictates. The Bandaranaike blood-line in Sri Lankan politics will diminish with this brother and sister combination because they have brought insult to the family by their own actions.
