TAMILS AND MUSLIMS IN BATTTICALOA AND MUTTUR IN LARGE NUMBERS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST LTTE CIVILIAN KILLINGS

Tamils and Muslims in Batticaloa and Muttur demonstrated against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in great numbers demanding that they immediately stop killing civilians ,June 19.
The Batticaloa demonstration was held amidst another assassination on the same day of another man, yet to be identified , by the Pistol Gang of the LTTE, security sources said. The man with four shots to his head, was found lying at the junction of Loyds Road and Arunagiri Road , shot with a 9 mm pistol about 8.40 a.m. police said. The police informed about the killing to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission.

Members of different political parties , the latest addition is Karuna led TMVP, with EPRLF, EPDP, and PLOTE took part in the Batticaloa demonstration. Carrying placards with photographs of assasinated civilians by the the Tigers the large crowds of peole were shouting slogans against the Tigers.

The demonstrators stopped before the 233 regiment of the army and a Catholic church and handed over petitions demanding inquiries into the civilian killings of the Tamil Tigers. Army Brigadier Berty Perera and Father E.Joseph received the memorandums handed over to them. They marched in front of the Hospital to declare open the memorial to remember, assassinated EPRLF, EPDP and PLOTE members.

The Muttur Muslim Organization organized a hartal to protest against the the killings of 64 cicilians at Kebithigollewa. A spokesman said this was the first time the Muttur Muslims were holding a hartal on behalf of some Sinhalese. He said strong public opinion shoulde be created against the Tamil Tigers On the day of the hartal work in Muttur stopped . Even the sole bus running between Muttur and Trincomalee did not run.
