Latest LTTE Strategy

Dilrook Kannangara

I refer to the article appeared recently in Lankaweb. “The President Mahinda Rajapakse should wake up from his state of euphoric amnesia, and return home, before UNP take over SLFP and the Government.” by Charles Perera. This is a true account of the impending danger.

This is the latest LTTE strategy for survival. When the world declared war on terror, the tigers, instead of hiding, concerted their servant to come to power in Sri Lanka. Utter degenerated statesmanship led to many unlawful and treacherous acts including the slaying of hundreds of Tamil democratic politicians, security personnel, Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim civilians (ironically termed “peace”), Tiger puppeteering of the nation state, the unceasing firing agreement (ironically called the “cease fire agreement”) and the list goes on.

We have come full circle. SLFP politicians probably have forgotten this tiger play once acted in 2000. When the then president won for the second term, instead of holding an immediate general election, she obtained the UNP support to implement the ‘devolution package’. Few months later when the bill was presented, the UNP backtracked and ridiculed the then government. This lead to the election of a weak government that was dissolved within a year.

Coupled with the utterances of the opposition leader that they will take power within 90 days, this poses a grave threat to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation. What the LTTE has planned is for the UNP to join with the SLFP government until the budget at which time the UNP will vote against the budget along with the TNA, CWC and SLMC. UPFA reduced to only the SLFP will be unable to pass the budget leading the country to another general election. With the LTTE desperately fighting for survival, they will go to any length to terrorize the Sinhalese and Muslims into submission as in 2001; it will be the UNP-CWC-UPF-TNA-SLMC-LTTE coalition that will win the election.

This time around the LTTE will ensure that the army commander, all the patriotic forces and all the HSZs are eliminated as early as possible. They will not forget the president too. Then it will be slavery - the meanest kind- as happened during 2001-2004.

It is the duty of all the patriotic men and women to enlighten the SLFP that is on an arrogant and self-destructive course to change their partners. This IS the gravest danger the nation faces today. Knowing too well that the UNP (as it is now) is inseparable from the LTTE, it is unforgivable that the SLFP is committing the same mistake yet again. As the saying goes if you go to sleep with dogs you will wake up with fleas.
